PURPOSE: To describe the hemodynamic effect of oral acetazolamide administration on ocular perfusion in a patient with pseudotumor cerebri associated with Crohn disease.
DESIGN: Interventional case report.
METHODS: A 20-year-old woman with a 5-year history of Crohn disease presented with a 2-week history of headache and blurred vision in both eyes. Ophthalmologic examination was normal. Fluorescein angiography showed a profound delay in retinal and choroidal perfusion. Lumbar puncture showed an opening pressure of 320 mm water. Therapy was initiated with oral acetazolamide 750 mg per day.

The incisor development of fetal rats on gestation day 19 was well correlated with their fetal weights. The number of odontoblasts in the mandibular incisors, an index of incisor development, increased more than that of the maxillary incisors with increase in fetal body weights. The protective effect of acetazolamide or sodium chloride loading on cisplatin nephrotoxicity was investigated in rats. After a single dose of cisplatin (5 mg kg-1 i.p.) kidney function was studied after 5, 28 and 84 days. Acetazolamide (75 mg kg-1 i.p.) was administered as a single dose prior (30 min) to the cisplatin injection. By the time of cisplatin administration, the rats were sodium depleted except the sodium-loaded group. We have studied the effect of acetazolamide 500 mg bd for three days on ventilatory response to CO2 (HCVR) and hypoxia under both isocapnic and poikilocapnic conditions (isocapnic and poikilocapnic HVR) in five normal subjects. Combination therapy with a loop diuretic and an aldosterone antagonist can produce normokalemic hypochloremic alkalosis, a complication not previously documented in the literature. This report describes 74 patients who had severe congestive heart failure treated with a combination of furosemide and spironolactone in whom this complication developed.
