Dose-response relationships in transcranial brain stimulation: Physics, physiology and mechanism.

The use of noninvasive transcranial brain stimulation methods, such as transcranial electrical stimulation (tES), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), transcranial focused ultrasound stimulation (tFUS), and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), has grown significantly over the past two decades. Evidence indicates that the dose-response relationship in brain stimulation is neither straightforward nor monotonic, with outcomes influenced by factors such as the brain state, anatomical variability, and neurophysiological mechanisms. Despite advancements in the field, there is still no consensus on s

Tinnitus: A Dimensionally Segregated, yet Perceptually Integrated Heterogeneous Disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Tinnitus subtypes are proposed to lie on a continuum of different symptom dimensions rather than be categorical. However, there is no comprehensive empirical data showing this complex relationship between different tinnitus symptoms. The objective of this study is to provide empirical evidence for the dimensional nature of tinnitus and how different auditory and non-auditory symptoms interact with each other through complex interactions. We do this using graph theory, a mathematical tool that empirically maps this complex interaction. This way, graph theory can be utilised to highl

The neurophysiology of closed-loop auditory stimulation in sleep: A magnetoencephalography study.

Closed-loop auditory stimulation (CLAS) is a brain modulation technique in which sounds are timed to enhance or disrupt endogenous neurophysiological events. CLAS of slow oscillation up-states in sleep is becoming a popular tool to study and enhance sleep's functions, as it increases slow oscillations, evokes sleep spindles and enhances memory consolidation of certain tasks. However, few studies have examined the specific neurophysiological mechanisms involved in CLAS, in part because of practical limitations to available tools. To evaluate evidence for possible models of how sound stimulation

Why is the perceptual octave stretched? An account based on mismatched time constants within the auditory brainstem.

This paper suggests an explanation for listeners' greater tolerance to positive than negative mistuning of the higher tone within an octave pair. It hypothesizes a neural circuit tuned to cancel the lower tone that also cancels the higher tone if that tone is in tune. Imperfect cancellation is the cue to mistuning of the octave. The circuit involves two neural pathways, one delayed with respect to the other, that feed a coincidence-sensitive neuron via excitatory and inhibitory synapses. A mismatch between the time constants of these two synapses results in an asymmetry in sensitivity to misma

Modeling temporal information encoding by the population of fibers in the healthy and synaptopathic auditory nerve.

We report a theoretical study aimed at investigating the impact of cochlear synapse loss (synaptopathy) on the encoding of the envelope (ENV) and temporal fine structure (TFS) of sounds by the population of auditory nerve fibers. A computational model was used to simulate auditory-nerve spike trains evoked by sinusoidally amplitude-modulated (AM) tones at 10 Hz with various carrier frequencies and levels. The model included 16 cochlear channels with characteristic frequencies (CFs) from 250 Hz to 8 kHz. Each channel was innervated by 3, 4 and 10 fibers with low (LSR), medium (MSR), and high sp

Deafness in an auditory specialist, the big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus).

Bats are long-lived animals that show presumed resistance to noise-induced and age-related hearing loss, which has been attributed to their dependence on sound processing for survival. Echolocation and basic auditory functions have been studied extensively in the big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus), an insectivorous microchiropteran species. We conducted hearing tests and analysis of cochlear sensory cells in a group of big brown bats that exhibited anomalies in behavioral sonar tracking experiments and/or lacked neural responses to acoustic stimulation in subcortical auditory nuclei. We show for…

[Clinical application of sound therapy in chronic subjective tinnitus].

Chronic subjective tinnitus is an auditory phantom phenomenon perceived by patients only, with no external sound source. It's a common disease and it lacks effective treatments. Sound therapy is an optional treatment which proved to reduce the tinnitus loudness and the negative effects on life. After decades of development, a wide variety of acoustic therapies have been produced, but seldom are likely to thoroughly cure tinnitus. In recent years, some new acoustic treatments based on the hypothesis of mechanisms of tinnitus, are expected to alleviate or even eliminate tinnitus.

Demonstration of laser biospeckle method for speedy in vivo evaluation of plant-sound interactions with arugula.

In recent years, it is becoming clearer that plant growth and its yield are affected by sound with certain sounds, such as seedling of corn directing itself toward the sound source and its ability to distinguish stuttering of larvae from other sounds. However, methods investigating the effects of sound on plants either take a long time or are destructive. Here, we propose using laser biospeckle, a non-destructive and non-contact technique, to investigate the activities of an arugula plant for sounds of different frequencies, namely, 0 Hz or control, 100 Hz, 1 kHz, 10 kHz, including rock and cl

Auditory experience affects degeneration of the ventral cochlear nucleus in Mongolian gerbils.

Gerbils exhibit a unique encephalopathy characterized by spongioform lesions in the neuropil of the cochlear nucleus and that others have recently described. The present results suggest that the course of this degenerative disorder is affected by acoustic experience. In gerbils in which acoustic stimulation was limited postnatally, the number and the extent of these lesions was dramatically reduced. Monaural deprivation reduced lesion number and extent only in the ipsilateral cochlear nucleus; binaural deprivation affected both cochlear nuclei. The lesions were most evident in certain portions…

Bone-marrow-derived cells that home to acoustic deafened cochlea preserved their hematopoietic identity.

The high degree of bone marrow cell (BMC) plasticity has prompted us to test its restoration possibility in inner ear repair. Our aim was to determine the potential of these cells to transdifferentiate into specialized cochlea cell types after acoustic injury and BMC mobilization. Lethally irradiated mice were transplanted with BMCs from green fluorescent protein (GFP) transgenic mice and subjected to acoustic deafening 3 months later. In a separate experiment, stem cell factor and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor were administered to test the effect of BMC mobilization on bone marrow-der

Promontory stimulation following labyrinthectomy: implications for cochlear implantation.

Transtympanic electric promontory stimulation is a psychoacoustic test used to assess residual acoustic neurons in profound sensorineural hearing loss. The test was performed in six patients who had previously undergone transmastoid (N = 5) or transcanal-oval window (N = 1) labyrinthectomy as a means of determining the feasibility of future cochlear implantation. Four patients had unilateral Meniere's disease, one had labyrinthitis, and one had delayed onset vertigo. All patients perceived a definite auditory sensation in the labyrinthectomized ear during stimulation. The results of threshold,

A review of nonconventional ultrasound techniques and contrast-enhanced ultrasonography of noncardiac canine disorders.

Modern ultrasound contrast media are gas-containing stabilized microbubbles that remain intact in the circulating blood for several minutes after intravenous injection and increase the intensity of the backscattered ultrasound. When the microbubbles disappear from the blood, they can be detected in the parenchyma of the liver and the spleen for about 30 more minutes (late liver- and spleen-specific phase). The insonated microbubbles produce second harmonic ultrasound frequencies, whose detection requires nonconventional ultrasound modalities such as pulsed inversion imaging. Nonconventional ul

Distributed feedforward and feedback cortical processing supports human speech production.

Speech production is a complex human function requiring continuous feedforward commands together with reafferent feedback processing. These processes are carried out by distinct frontal and temporal cortical networks, but the degree and timing of their recruitment and dynamics remain poorly understood. We present a deep learning architecture that translates neural signals recorded directly from the cortex to an interpretable representational space that can reconstruct speech. We leverage learned decoding networks to disentangle feedforward vs. feedback processing. Unlike prevailing models, we

Case reopened: A temporal basis for harmonic pitch templates in the early auditory system?a).

A fundamental assumption of rate-place models of pitch is the existence of harmonic templates in the central nervous system (CNS). Shamma and Klein [(2000). J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 107, 2631-2644] hypothesized that these templates have a temporal basis. Coincidences in the temporal fine-structure of neural spike trains, even in response to nonharmonic, stochastic stimuli, would be sufficient for the development of harmonic templates. The physiological plausibility of this hypothesis is tested. Responses to pure tones, low-pass noise, and broadband noise from auditory nerve fibers and brainstem "hi

Sound Therapy to Reduce Auditory Gain for Hyperacusis and Tinnitus.

PURPOSE: Hyperacusis is the most common of the different types of sound tolerance conditions. It has been defined as physical discomfort or pain when any sound reaches a certain level of loudness that would be comfortable for most people. Because hyperacusis and tinnitus occur together so often, it has been theorized that they have a common neural mechanism. A leading contender for that mechanism is enhancement of auditory gain. The purpose of this tutorial is to review the evidence that sound/acoustic therapy can reduce auditory gain and, thereby, can increase loudness tolerance for people wi

Systematic review of sound stimulation to elicit tinnitus residual inhibition.

BACKGROUND: Residual Inhibition is considered as tinnitus alteration immediately after exposure to sound. Its clinical significance and correlation with the pathophysiology and treatment prognosis of tinnitus remain enigmatic. The objective of this review is to critically appraise scientific evidence regarding the residual inhibition prevalence and how it is correlated with different sound stimuli. METHODS: A systematic review of tinnitus Residual Inhibition (RI) studies was performed, focusing on prevalence, methods used, stimuli presented and responses obtained. A literature search (PubMed,

[Research on fractal tones generating method for tinnitus rehabilitation based on musical instrument digital interface technology].

Tinnitus is a subjective sensation of sound without external stimulation. It has become ubiquitous and has therefore aroused much attention in recent years. According to the survey, ameliorating tinnitus based on special music and reducing pressure have good effects on the treatment of it. Meantime, vicious cycle chains between tinnitus and bad feelings have been broken. However, tinnitus therapy has been restricted by using looping music. Therefore, a method of generating fractal tones based on musical instrument digital interface (MIDI) technology and pink noise has been proposed in this pap
