OBJECTIVE: Hearing loss remains the most common symptom associated with acoustic neuroma. This study documents the audiometric findings from 721 acoustic neuroma procedures.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective study. The preoperative audiometric data were compiled and were analyzed by patient age, gender, tumor size, time of surgery, and neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF 2). Postoperative audiometric data were arranged and compiled in the same way. The hearing classification proposed by the AAO-HNS was applied to all preoperative and postoperative cases.
SETTING: Tertiary referral center.

Forty-one patients with unilateral acoustic neuroma (AN) were diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) between 1992 and 1997. All cases were analyzed with respect to tumor location and the results of audiometric examinations, auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing, and electronystagmography (ENG). Tumor location was determined by MRI and cases were divided into intracanalicular and extracanalicular sites. Intracanalicular tumors were significantly smaller than the extracanalicular ones The pure-tone hearing thresholds were better in ears with intracanalicular lesions than in those with

OBJECTIVE: Trying to find an accurate relation between loudness discomfort level and acoustic reflex threshold.
METHODS: Seventy patients were involved in this study. Ten normal patients, 30 patients of unilateral conductive hearing loss and 30 patients of unilateral or bilateral, mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss were tested by 1, 2, KH2 pure tones, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8 KHz narrow band noise, wide band noise and speech noise stimuli to get loudness discomfort level and acoustic reflex threshold in each ear for each stimulus.
RESULTS: Ninety two percent of predicted loudness discomfort

The presence of inverted acoustic reflex (IAR) was observed in patients with surgically-confirmed otosclerosis. The characteristics of intensity, stimuli, and thresholds were analyzed. IAR was found in 90% of the patients stimulated on the same side at 110 dB HL with 500, 1000, and 2000-Hz frequencies. The intensity of IAR was higher at 1000-Hz and in patients with mixed hearing loss. We conclude that the detection of IAR in patients with conductive hearing loss and normal tympanic membrane allows otosclerosis to be differentiated from other pathologies that produce ossicular chain fixation. AIM: To analyse the risk factors involved in the development of ocular complications after acoustic neuroma resection, in particular corneal complications and visual loss, and to identify measures that may reduce these.
METHODS: 62 patients who underwent surgery for acoustic neuroma had a standardised ophthalmic examination and retrospective case note review.
RESULTS: At final review (mean 37.6 months), although 38 patients reported ocular symptoms, only 22% saw 6/12 or worse. Patients with hypoaesthetic corneas had a higher incidence of corneal pathology (79%) than those with normal sensati

The results of treatment of acoustic neurinomas using Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKR) during a 6-year period in our center were reviewed. Since May 7, 1990, we treated 88 cases of acoustic neurinoma with GKR. During a 52-month mean follow-up period, MRI was obtained in 63 patients. Reduction in tumor size occurred in 34 (54%) cases, and another 27 (42.8%) tumors showed no change. The tumor control rate was thus 95%. Tumor size increased in 3 (4.8%) cases, but one case is still in early follow-up. Two cases were operated after GKR. Histological examination of the tumors removed at surgery 8 mont

Type 2 neurofibromatosis is a rare genetic condition, with an autosomal (dominant) inheritance and a prevalence of 1/50.000 inhabitants, characterized by bilateral acoustic neuromas. We present here a 16-year-old patient with a greater growth of the right-sided neuroma. A review of the literature, regarding incidence, clinical presentation, diagnostic clues and treatment is also included.

This article focuses on the incidence, pathophysiology, and management of pain removal of acoustic neuroma. The debate regarding the choice of surgical approach and frequency of headaches is reviewed. The proposed causes of postoperative headaches are discussed. Specific surgical strategies to minimize the risk for developing prolonged postoperative headaches are presented, and medical management options are summarized.

UNLABELLED: The vocal tract from the glottis to the lips is considered to he a resonator and the voice is changeable depending upon the shape of the vocal tract. In this report, we examined the change in pharyngeal size and acoustic feature of voice after tonsillectomy.
METHODS: Subjects were 20 patients. The distance between both anterior pillars (glossopalatine arches), and between both posterior pillars (pharyngopalatine arches) was measured weekly. For acoustic measurements, the five Japanese vowels and Japanese conversational sentences were recorded and analyzed.
RESULTS: The distance b

The authors present methods of diagnosis and results of surgical treatment of 210 acoustic neurinomas. Almost all patients suffered from large (21.4%) and very large (76.2%) tumours. Results of treatment were assessed depending on the method of surgery (classical and microsurgical), the size of tumour and the method of tumour removal (total or partial). Total tumour removal was achieved in 84.1% of patients operated on by means of microtechnique, and in 72.6% treated with classical method. Very good surgical results were observed in 52.4% and 38.3%, respectively. Difficulties and risk factors

Although operative experience is considered to be critically important in the surgical management of acoustic tumors, little objective evidence substantiates this claim. The present study was undertaken to determine whether a learning curve exists for acoustic tumor surgery. The first 96 acoustic tumor patients managed surgically by a new neurotologic team were retrospectively reviewed. A significant improvement (P<.0003; F=6.32) in the ability to achieve good (grade II or better) postoperative facial nerve function was identified. Improving trends for complete resection rate and hearing prese
