Environmental temperature has systematic effects on rates of species interactions, primarily through its influence on organismal physiology. We present a mechanistic model for the thermal response of consumer-resource interactions. We focus on how temperature affects species interactions via key traits - body velocity, detection distance, search rate and handling time - that underlie per capita consumption rate. The model is general because it applies to all foraging strategies: active-capture (both consumer and resource body velocity are important), sit-and-wait (resource velocity dominates)

We investigate adaptation under a reaching task with an acceleration-based force field perturbation designed to alter the nominal straight hand trajectory in a potentially benign manner: pushing the hand off course in one direction before subsequently restoring towards the target. In this particular task, an explicit strategy to reduce motor effort requires a distinct deviation from the nominal rectilinear hand trajectory. Rather, our results display a clear directional preference during learning, as subjects adapted perturbed curved trajectories towards their initial baselines. We model this

Resistance to intracellular bacterial pathogens such as Brucella spp. relies on cell-mediated immunity, which involves activation of the bactericidal mechanisms of antigen-presenting cells (macrophages and dendritic cells) and the subsequent expansion of antigen-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell clones. Brucella antigens induce the production of T helper type 1 (Th1) cytokines, and an adequate Th1 immune response is critical for the clearance of Brucella infection. Studies on experimental and human brucellosis indicate that interferon-gamma (IFNgamma) is the principal cytokine active against Bruce

Genome duplication, which results in polyploidy, is disruptive to fundamental biological processes. Genome duplications occur spontaneously in a range of taxa and problems such as sterility, aneuploidy, and gene expression aberrations are common in newly formed polyploids. In mammals, genome duplication is associated with cancer and spontaneous abortion of embryos. Nevertheless, stable polyploid species occur in both plants and animals. Understanding how natural selection enabled these species to overcome early challenges can provide important insights into the mechanisms by which core cellula

There are several levels of O2 deprivation with different possibilities of adaptation and compensation. All of them appear to be highly conservative in phylogenesis and are active early in ontogenetic development. The coordinated structural and functional responses to systemic and/or local hypoxia form the basis for individual adaptation to environmental requirements and pathological threat.

Departures from perfect bilateral symmetry are thought to mirror an organism's ability to maintain developmental homeostasis. There is evidence showing that symmetry is negatively correlated with evolutionary and physical fitness. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between symmetry and health-related physiological characteristics in males and females. Forty-six male and female subjects participated in this study. Both facial and anthropometric traits were investigated for deviations from perfect bilateral symmetry. After measurements were made the subjects were tested

Inspired by the evolutionary diversification of biological eyes for environmental adaptation, recently emerged artificial counterparts offer a variety of visual features that can emulate the eyes of humans, insects, fish, eagles, cats, and others. However, grand challenges reside in developing transformational artificial pupils to address drastic environmental change. Here, we propose a bioinspired vision system that integrates a hemispherical imaging array as an artificial retina with liquid-metal shape-shifters as visual neurons and an adaptive artificial pupil to comprehensively simulate vi

Cholestasis results in intrahepatic accumulation of cytotoxic bile acids which cause liver injury ultimately leading to biliary fibrosis and cirrhosis. Cholestatic liver damage is counteracted by a variety of intrinsic hepatoprotective mechanisms. Such defense mechanisms include repression of hepatic bile acid uptake and de novo bile acid synthesis. Furthermore, phase I and II bile acid detoxification is induced rendering bile acids more hydrophilic. In addition to "orthograde" export via canalicular export systems, these compounds are also excreted via basolateral "alternative" export systems

The Cancer dependency maps (DepMap) identify genetic dependencies in cancer cells using large-scale loss-of-function screens, providing a foundation for cancer-specific treatment strategies. However, discrepancies exist between cancer cell line models (CCLs) and patient-derived tumor models, particularly in translating findings to clinical settings. To bridge this gap, computational approaches such as artificial intelligence-based domain adaptation can assist in aligning laboratory and patient-derived molecular data, thereby improving the translation of preclinical findings into personalized t

All pathogens rely on dynamic gene expression for host adaptation and disease causation. This is especially important for pathogens that normally are found in the environment, like Cryptococcus neoformans, given that environmental and host conditions are dramatically different. Epigenetic modifications, like those carried out by SET-domain histone lysine methyltransferases (HKMTs), are essential for this genome expression flexibility. While transcription factors and signaling cascades have been well-studied in C. neoformans's host adaptation, the role of HKMTs in this process has not been expl

The threespine stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, is an emerging model system for understanding the genomic basis of vertebrate adaptation. A strength of the system is that marine populations have repeatedly colonized freshwater environments, serving as natural biological replicates. While repeated adaptation to freshwater has occurred throughout the northern hemisphere, Cook Inlet in south-central Alaska has been an area of focus. There is a high-quality freshwater reference assembly from a population in the region, Bear Paw Lake. Using a freshwater reference assembly is a potential limitat

The metabolism of immune cells must adapt dynamically to support their diverse functions. B cells, which are the key cellular mediators of humoral immunity, undergo extensive metabolic changes throughout their development and function, starting from their commitment to the B cell lineage in the bone marrow. In the periphery, further rounds of metabolic adaptation in B cells are driven by temporally regulated changes in signalling cues, energetic demands and nutrient availability within specialized tissue niches. Although they have historically been less well studied than other immune cell type

Pediatric intestinal failure resulting from short bowel syndrome remains a significant source of morbidity and mortality despite advances in parenteral nutrition and multidisciplinary intestinal rehabilitation. While native intestinal adaptation provides a foundation for recovery in many patients, those with the most severe forms of short bowel syndrome face limited therapeutic options, including lifelong parenteral nutrition dependence, surgical lengthening procedures, and intestinal transplantation-each associated with substantial complications. The field of bowel regeneration has expanded d

The cellular response to environmental fluctuations, such as increased temperature, is crucial in promoting cell survival and plays an increasingly recognized role in cancer biology. Important cellular functions altered by heat stress are cell polarization and protein translation. Previous studies have shown that heat stress alters the dynamics of Cdc42, a key regulator of cell polarization in eukaryotes, and promotes ribonucleoprotein (RNP) granule formation, reprogramming protein translation. The biological mechanisms underlying these vast changes are only partially known. Here, we report th

Plant and fungal cell walls are essential for growth, adaptation, and survival, with their intricate architectures dictating both resistance to stress and susceptibility to antifungal or biomass-degrading strategies. Understanding how these walls are built, remodeled, and function at the molecular level is therefore central to both clinical and biotechnological applications. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ssNMR) has emerged as a uniquely powerful tool for this purpose, as it reveals the structure, dynamics, and interactions of intact biopolymers without disrupting their native organiz

Developing computational methods for single-cell drug response prediction deepens our understanding of tumor heterogeneity and uncovers resistance mechanisms critical to improving cancer therapy. However, current approaches struggle to fully capture intratumoral heterogeneity, as bulk RNA sequencing (bulk RNA-seq) obscures heterogeneity across individual cells, while single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) remains constrained by limited throughput and high cost. Current approaches integrating bulk and scRNA-seq data frequently encounter batch effects, impairing robust knowledge transfer. Moreov

Allostasis provides a supporting role to the homeostatic control of biological variables in mammalian species. While the concept of homeostasis is related to the control of variables within a set point or range that are essential to life, allostasis refers to systems that facilitate adaptation to challenges that the organism faces and the new requirements for survival. Essential for such adaptation is the role played by the brain in eliciting neural and neuroendocrine responses. Reproductive function is fundamental for the survival of species but is costly in energetic terms and requires a syn
