Evolution of herbicide-resistant weeds.

The first generation of species-selective phenoxy herbicides went into use at the same time as modern antibiotics, chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides and new fungicides and rodenticides. No resistance has appeared to the still widely used phenoxy herbicides. However, resistance has developed, in many isolated areas around the world, to s-triazine herbicides and, in a few small areas, to bipyridillium herbicides. The parameters of population genetics that govern herbicide resistance and those that govern resistance of microorganisms and fungi to other xenobiotics are the same: generations, se

Onset of voicing in stuttered and fluent utterances.

Electroglottographic (EGG) and acoustic waveforms of the first few glottal pulses of voicing were monitored and voice onset time (VOT) measured during an adaptation task performed by stutterers and controls. The fluent utterances of stutterers resembled those of control subjects. After dysfluencies, however, the EGG signal increased gradually, lending physiological support to the technique of "easy onset" of voicing. EGG waveforms also served to help differentiate mild from severe stutterers. Idiosyncratic ritualized laryngeal behavior, sometimes including physiological tremor, was evident in

Heterogeneous structure in face-selective human occipito-temporal cortex.

It is well established that the human visual system contains a distributed network of regions that are involved in processing faces, but our understanding of how faces are represented within these face-sensitive brain areas is incomplete. We used fMRI to investigate whether face-sensitive brain areas are solely tuned for whole faces, or whether they contain heterogeneous populations of neurons tuned to individual components of the face as well as whole faces, as suggested by physiological investigations in nonhuman primates. The middle fusiform gyrus (fusiform face area, or FFA) and the inferi

Restoration of wall shear stress in the cephalic vein during extreme hemodynamics.

The surgical creation of an artery-vein connection via a Brachicephalic fistula (BCF) in patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD) provides a unique opportunity to study blood vessel response mechanisms to extreme hemodynamic conditions in relatively short timeframes. After BCF creation, the flow rate in the vein increases by an order of magnitude leading to separated flows and corresponding abnormally low, or negative, wall shear stress (WSS) in the curved arch segment of the cephalic vein. Locations of abnormally low WSS are shown to correlate with development of neointimal hyperplasia (N

Prioritisation of older adults in global climate change adaptation plans: a comparative policy document analysis of 204 countries.

Older adults (ie, ≥65 years old) have disproportionate health impacts from climate change owing to age-associated physiological changes and higher prevalences of chronic diseases, functional impairment, and social isolation. Prioritising older adults in climate change adaptation plans is essential to ensure their needs are supported in future policy decisions. We identified 16 adaptation themes relevant to the health and wellbeing of older adults using a framework-based synthesis and examined their inclusion across national climate change adaptation plans from 204 countries. 125 countries (61·

Analysis of the TGF-β1 of a Tibetan Plateau Schizothoracine Fish (Gymnocypris dobula) Revealed Enhanced Cytoprotection in Hypoxic Environments.

Background: The Tibetan Plateau, which is known for its high elevation and low oxygen levels, presents a challenging environment for its inhabitants. To adapt to these hypoxic conditions, species of Schizothoracine, a subfamily of Cyprinidae, have developed unique physiological mechanisms and functions. Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) is a multifunctional cytokine involved in the regulation of cell growth, differentiation, apoptosis, and the cellular immune response. However, its specific role in adaptation to hypoxia remains poorly understood. Methods: In this study, we aimed to characte

[Ten questions about the athlete's heart: a guide for the clinical cardiologist].

The athlete's heart is a complex physiological adaptation to sustained physical training, necessitating a specialized approach to diagnosis and management. Advanced cardiac imaging plays a pivotal role in differentiating physiological remodeling from pathological conditions such as cardiomyopathies. In particular, cardiac magnetic resonance is essential for detecting subclinical myocardial fibrosis and other structural abnormalities that may indicate underlying disease. Serial imaging during follow-up is valuable for monitoring the progression or regression of cardiac remodeling, especially du

Implicit sensorimotor adaptation comprises distinct mechanisms for action selection and execution.

The sensorimotor system is continuously adjusted to minimize error. Current theories assume that this adaptation process entails the operation of multiple learning systems, with a key division between implicit and explicit components. Recent studies have revealed several inconsistencies regarding the characteristics and constraints of the implicit system, suggesting that the current framework is incomplete. Here, we propose that these conflicting findings can be understood by recognizing that there are multiple implicit subcomponents, each with distinct computational goals. One well-studied co

Sleep-Gated Adaptation: A Conceptual Framework Linking Exercise-Induced Adaptive Consolidation to Interindividual Variability in Training Response.

Exercise-induced molecular signaling is transient, resolving within hours, whereas the structural and functional adaptations to repeated training develop over weeks to months. The processes that convert signaling into durable adaptation, the conditions that best support this conversion, and the sources of interindividual variability in training outcomes have largely been studied separately. This review proposes a conceptual framework for integrating these approaches. Adaptive Consolidation is introduced as an organizing concept for this intermediate transition, synthesized as a multi-filter ca

Conserved optical adaptations enable amphibious vision in compound eyes.

The visual systems of amphibious animals must perform in two optically distinct environments: air and water. Little is known about how diffraction-limited, arthropod compound eyes maintain optical function across the air-water interface, aside from one commonality: flat corneas. Since the external shape of a lens is only one of several properties that influence optical performance, we examined how the corneal optics of compound eyes varied with amphibious ecology across two biological transects: developmentally in one insect species and comparatively among multiple species. Both analyses revea

Nuclear adaptation in cell migration.

Cells in tissues often navigate complex environments, encountering physical obstacles which impose mechanical confinement. The nucleus -the largest organelle of the eukaryotic cell-is emerging as a key platform for integrating mechanical signals from the extracellular environment. A mechanically stiff nucleus often limits migration through confinement. It is becoming increasingly clear that the nucleus does not passively resist forces. Subnuclear organisation can change upon mechanical stress, revealing an impressive capability for adaptation to environmental challenges that underpins cell fun

Muscle architecture in mustelid mammals: anatomical proxies for muscle function and their relation to locomotor habit.

BACKGROUND: Though skeletal adaptations for locomotion in mammals are well documented, possible limb adaptations in terms of muscle architecture have received far less study. Examining mustelid mammals and sampling climbing, digging, and swimming specialists, as well as generalists, we here investigate whether differences in the architecture of limb muscles coincide with differing locomotor habits as is the case for limb skeletal morphology. RESULTS: For 49 individuals across 19 mustelid species, we measured fascicle length, belly mass, and physiological cross-sectional area (PCSA) for six fo

Evidence for endemism and local adaptation in Antarctic soil bacteria.

Antarctic soils represent one of the most extreme environments for microbial life on Earth, yet they harbor heterogeneous and diverse microbial communities. Biologists have long hypothesized that Antarctic microorganisms are unique from those found on other continents due to the extreme geographic isolation and the cold, dry, and challenging conditions typical of Antarctica. To test this hypothesis, we focused on a cosmopolitan bacterial genus, Arthrobacter, that is widely distributed across global soils. We first profiled a global metagenomic dataset from both Antarctic and non-Antarctic surf

Multi-omics of the endangered Acer miaotaiense reveal nervonic acid biosynthesis, population evolution, and environmental adaptation.

Climate change threatens global forest biodiversity, particularly affecting long-lived, endangered tree species. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying their population evolution and environmental adaptation remain unclear. Here, we employed multi-omics analyses, including pan-genomes, transcriptomics, metabolomics, population genomics, and epigenomics, to decipher nervonic acid biosynthesis and population evolutionary history of the endangered tree Acer miaotaiense. A high-quality, chromosome-level genome of A. miaotaiense was first assembled (645.94 Mb). Pan-genome characterization sho

Viral Pleomorphism: How Virion Structure Guides Infection and Adaptation.

Morphological variability in virion size and shape (pleomorphism) is a prominent feature of many pathogenic enveloped viruses, but understanding its biology presents a long-standing challenge. Understanding the role of pleomorphism in viruses requires structural and functional analysis of virions across broad scales, from molecules and cells to animals and populations. The extent of our understanding of viral pleomorphism has hinged on technological advances in viral analysis of increasingly challenging samples, which now approach high-resolution measurements of viral dynamics in animal infect

Visual trait variation and allometric scaling indicate intra- and inter-caste plasticity in the social wasp Protopolybia sedula.

Understanding how phenotypic plasticity arises in sensory traits is a key challenge in evolutionary and developmental biology. Eusocial insects offer a useful model for exploring it, because their castes perform distinct tasks and occupy different light environments. We examined morphological variation and scaling in the visual systems of female castes of Protopolybia sedula, a neotropical wasp with simultaneous polygyny. Although queens are larger than workers, the two castes showed similar eye area, ommatidial diameter and ommatidia number. However, queens showed greater variability in ommat
