Psychological and physiological reactivity to stress: an experimental study on bulimic patients, restrained eaters and controls.

BACKGROUND: Binge eating behavior in bulimic patients is thought to play a crucial role in the regulation of psychophysiological arousal in stressful situations. Previous results suggest that interpersonal stress and achievement challenge are perceived as particularly stressful by bulimic individuals. It is not clear, however, whether bulimic individuals respond to stress with an increased desire to binge, and whether this increase is accompanied by higher psychophysiological reactivity compared to healthy controls. METHODS: Twenty-seven patients with bulimia nervosa (DSM-IV), 27 restrained e

Disclosure of traumas and psychosomatic processes.

Results from a series of studies are summarized in support of a general theory of inhibition and psychosomatics. According to this view, to inhibit thoughts, feelings, or behaviors is associated with physiological work. In the short term, inhibition results in increased autonomic nervous system activity. Over time, inhibition serves as a cumulative stressor that increases the probability of psychosomatic disease. Actively avoiding thoughts and feelings surrounding a trauma and/or not discussing a trauma is a particularly insidious form of inhibition. The results from recent surveys and experim

Divorce: crisis intervention guided by attachment theory.

Persons in the crisis of divorce are increasingly being treated. Attachment theory is a way of conceptualizing man's propensity to form affectional bonds and the resulting patterns of distress when these bonds are disrupted. Guidelines for a short-term and crisis-oriented management based upon attachment theory are presented.

Exploring the relationship between inhibitory control and coping behaviour in horses.

The ability to flexibly adapt to the demands of a stressful situation is a key factor in successful coping. Appropriate coping is of critical importance in artificial environments, which may include novel and potentially stressful situations. Being able to inhibit immediate but counterproductive reactions, and thus exert inhibitory control, might allow to better adapt to the environment. Horses are required to flexibly adapt to various housing conditions and training techniques; however, not all horses successfully cope as evidenced by the prevalence of stereotypical behaviours. We tested 31 m

Displacement behaviour is associated with reduced stress levels among men but not women.

Sex differences in the ability to cope with stress may contribute to the higher prevalence of stress-related disorders among women compared to men. We recently provided evidence that displacement behaviour--activities such as scratching and face touching--represents an important strategy for coping with stressful situations: in a healthy population of men, displacement behaviour during a social stress test attenuated the relationship between anxiety experienced prior to this test, and the subsequent self-reported experience of stress. Here, we extend this work to look at physiological and cogn

[Measurement of Affect Regulation Styles (MARS) expanded].

An expanded Spanish version of the Measure of Affect Regulation Styles (MARS), was applied to episodes of anger and sadness, in a sample of 355 graduate students from Chile, Spain, and Mexico. The study examines the association between affective regulation, adaptation to episodes and dispositional coping and emotional regulation, and psychological well-being. With regard to perceived improvement of adaptive goals, the following adaptive affect regulation strategies were confirmed: Instrumental coping, seeking social support, positive reappraisal, distraction, rumination, self-comfort, self-con

How to Cope with Coping in Adult Post-Hemorrhagic Patients Undergoing Neurorehabilitation: A Scoping Review.

Background/Objectives: Cerebral hemorrhage (CH) has physical, cognitive, and emotional consequences. Recovery requires a complex rehabilitation process in which coping strategies play a fundamental role in supporting psychological adaptation. The aim of this study is to investigate and understand the extent and manner in which coping strategies have been assessed in the CH population within the scientific literature. Methods: Studies were identified through searches in the PubMed, Scopus, and Embase databases. Eight studies published between 2014 and 2024 were selected. Results: The most frequ

Psychosocial effects of living with an increased risk of breast cancer: an exploratory study using telephone focus groups.

Research to date has mainly focused on the short-term psychological impact of genetic risk counselling for breast cancer. This study aimed to explore the long-term consequences for women of being informed about an increased risk of breast cancer in terms of: the effect on their everyday lives, their coping strategies and their unmet needs in terms of the current service. The participants were 25 women with a family history of breast cancer who had received genetic risk counselling and had consequently been receiving clinical surveillance for at least 2 years. They took part in one of seven tel

A Survey and Protocol for Assessing Online Learning Experience, Basic Psychological Needs, and Learning Engagement in University Students.

Online learning is embedded in higher education, but evaluations often rely on access, satisfaction, or completion indicators that do not identify where engagement problems arise. This article presents a reproducible English-language survey and partial least squares structural equation modeling protocol for assessing association pathways among online learning experience, basic psychological needs, and learning engagement in university students. Online learning experience is measured through platform usability, instructional support, interaction quality, and learning flexibility; basic psycholo

Pathways to Hazardous Drinking Among Racially and Socioeconomically Diverse Lesbian Women: Sexual Minority Stress, Rumination, Social Isolation, and Drinking to Cope.

Lesbian women engage in more hazardous drinking than heterosexual women yet we know relatively little about what explains this disparity. In the present study, race, socioeconomic status, minority stress, general psychological processes and distress were examined as pathways to hazardous drinking among young (18-35 years) Black and non-Hispanic White lesbian women. We used the psychological mediation framework adaptation of minority stress theory and the reserve capacity model as theoretical underpinnings of the conceptual model in the current study. Self-identified lesbian participants (N= 86

On the analysis of cheating.

Cheating, as a psychological mechanism, is common to all, weaving through early family dynamics and evolving sexual identities. When it erupts in our love relationships, confusion, destruction, and de-integration of existing psychological states occur for all those affected by the cheating. The eruption of cheating can be viewed as a spontaneous response of the individual to disrupt a state of psychological stagnation and regression that may have no conscious path for dissolution. The transgressive actions bring up the possibility of a secret or separated consciousness, potentially breaking in

Ask the experts: a practitioner-centred approach to resilience in emergency medical services.

Background: Resilience in high-stress occupations is commonly framed as a trait, an outcome, or the absence of psychopathology. None of these framings captures what practitioners in emergency medical services actually do, and interventions built on trait-based models have produced weak or inconsistent effects. Objective: This study argues that frontline resilience in emergency medical services is better understood as a domain-specific expert skill, and that work mode - a deliberately entered state, akin to an athlete's game face, in which the demands of the task rather than the emotional force

Existential Suffering: Intensive Caring and Existential Therapy Informed Communication for Serious Illness Care.

Existential concerns are common in serious illness and may include confronting questions about meaning, purpose, and mortality. The salience of these issues can vary between patients and throughout illness, and can oscillate between existential suffering, demoralization, normative processing, and even existential growth. Through analysis of a clinical composite case, this article illustrates dimensions and cues of existential suffering during serious illness. Recognizing the sources and manifestations of existential distress can help expand therapeutic imagination in serious illness care. Guid

Stressors and coping among esports coaches.

Esports coaches are integral to the development, performance, and overall success of esports players. Sharing the same high-pressure environment, they are likely exposed to similar stressors that can affect not only their effectiveness as coaches but also their personal well-being. Despite their critical role, esports coaches often lack access to structured development programs and support systems. To inform future research enabling tailored intervention strategies for coaches, this study explored the stressors faced by esports coaches and the coping strategies they employ. Drawing on data fro

Experiences of Secondary Emotional Distress: Considerations for Supporting the Research Team.

Emerging evidence suggests that researchers studying sensitive topics are prone to secondary emotional distress, and graduate students and trainees are particularly vulnerable as novice researchers. While many studies account for potential emotional distress in participants of research on sensitive topics, very few include considerations for mitigating emotional harm to researchers. Therefore, this article examines the experiences of graduate research assistants in a study on live discharge from hospice care. Distress stemmed from repeated exposure to sensitive narratives, blurred role boundar

Building pain resilience in LGBTQIA+ individuals.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and individuals with other related experiences or identities (LGBTQIA+) experience chronic pain and disability at twice the rate as their cisgender, endosex, and heterosexual counterparts. These disparities are shaped by intersecting social, structural, and historical factors, including minority stress, health care discrimination, and barriers to affirming care. While contextualized approaches to pain management have been recommended to address the unique lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ individuals, prevailing pain models largely rem
