PURPOSE: The purposes of this study are to report the first case of parotid gland adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) metastatic to the iris and ciliary body and suggest a successful treatment option.
METHODS: A 64-year-old white man presented with a diffuse multilobulated amelanotic mass involving the peripheral iris and anterior chamber angle. Fine needle aspiration with a 27-gauge needle was performed, disclosing epithelial cells with positive staining for AE1/AE3 and morphologic features consistent with metastatic parotid gland ACC. Treatment with I plaque radiotherapy (40 Gy to the apex) was

Osteosarcoma can develop secondary to malignant transformation within a preexisting benign bone lesion, such as Paget disease, osteonecrosis, fibrous dysplasia, and chronic infection, or it can arise in previously irradiated areas. This article presents the case of a 36-year-old woman who was affected by a radioinduced osteosarcoma after radiotherapy for an adenoid cystic carcinoma of the left parotid gland treated when she was 24 years old.

There is a considerable variation in the histologic subtype of epithelial malignancies among carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenomas (CXPA) and virtually any known carcinoma entity can develop. To our knowledge, adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) ex PA is quite rare despite the fact that de novo AdCC is the fourth most common salivary gland malignancy. We describe a new case of AdCC ex PA in the parotid gland of a 62 year-old woman. In our patient, there was a short interval of time between parotidectomy and local recurrence and rapid development of distant metastases. Although most of the reported cas

Necrotizing Sialometaplasia (NS) is a benign, self-limiting inflammatory disease of the mucus-secreting glands, and this illness mainly involves the minor salivary glands. The significance of NS resides in its clinical and histopathological resemblance to malignancy. We present here a case of necrotizing sialometaplasia on the soft palate, and this was accompanied by adenoid cystic carcinoma. We report here on this case to draw attention to the difficulty for deciding the extent of resecting a malignancy, and especially when the malignancy is simultaneously accompanied by necrotizing sialometa

INTRODUCTION: The adenoids are organized as lymphoepithelial structures that play an important role in protecting both the upper respiratory and alimentary tract regions. This functions requires dendritic cells (DC) which are one of the major populations of immune cells. Due to the presence of specific receptors (DC) are able to respond to both intra- and extracellular antigens. Dendritic cells activating immunological response in tonsil contribute formation immunologic competent cells on necessity of rolling inflammatory process in middle ear.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the location of bacteria and biofilm in adenoid tissue and in mucus overlying the adenoid.
DESIGN: Adenoids removed in 1 piece were oriented to the cephalic and caudal ends. Mucus was fixed by the gradual addition of Carnoy fluid. Consecutive histologic sections were stained with periodic acid-Schiff for visualization of the exopolysaccharide matrix, Giemsa for visualization of bacteria and cells, and fluorescent in situ hybridization with a universal probe for visualization of bacteria.

Tracheal tumours are rare, accounting for only about 0.3% of all bodily tumours. Their incidence is less than 0.2 per 100 000 inhabitants and 180 times less frequent than lung cancer. The reason for their rarity is not so clear. It is possible that turbulent airflow in the trachea protects its mucosa from inhaled carcinogen deposits. The authors report a case of adenoid cystic carcinoma in a 23 year-old woman, non-smoker, with acute clinical inspiratory stridor, where Nd-Yag laser use was extremely important to tracheal permeability as the tumor occupied over 80% of the tracheal lumen and coul

UNLABELLED: The adenoidectomy is the most often made operation in small children but the reasons of adenoid hypertrophy are not completely explain. Some researches show that in part of children allergy can be a risk factor for adenoid hypertrophy. The main aim of this study was the analysis of adenoid hypertrophy in children with different allergic diseases.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two separate groups of children were examined. The study group consisted of 436 children between 4 and 9 years old with allergic rhinitis and/or bronchial asthma and/or atopic dermatitis hypersensitive to house dust

Chronic nasal obstruction in children is a very common disorder. Obstructing adenoid is usually the first to blame. Though the clinical assessment is essential, it is often considered unreliable or insufficient. We conducted a prospective clinical study to validate a clinical score predicting the severity of adenoid obstruction in symptomatic children. The clinical score (CS) included mouth breathing, snoring, restless sleep, frequent waking-up at night and obstructive breathing during sleep. Each item received a score of 0 or 1. The palatal airway was evaluated on a lateral nasopharyngeal x-r

Mast cells may play a role in pathogenesis of the otitis media with effusion (OME) in children. The study involved 72 children with no history of allergic diseases. The analysed material were adenoids removed on the grounds of hypertrophy. Immunohistochemical analyses were carried out using antibodies (Dako, M 7052) directed against mast cell tryptase. The slides evaluation was performed by means of optic microscope. The presence of mast cells within adenoidal tissue were scored. There were no statistically significant difference between the numbers of mast cells in each examined adenoid as we…

We report a case of intracranial adenoid cystic carcinoma in the middle cranial fossa. A 40-year-old woman had noticed a tumor in the left external auditory canal 8 years previously. It was totally resected at that time. Histologically, the tumor was diagnosed as an adenoid cystic carcinoma. Recently the patient presented with loss of consciousness, suffering from mild recent-memory disturbance. Neurological examination revealed no other abnormalities. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated an enhanced solid mass with a multicystic component in the left temporal lobe. She underwent subt

Dedifferentiated adenoid cystic carcinomas are a recently defined, rare variant of adenoid cystic carcinomas characterized histologically by two components: conventional low-grade adenoid cystic carcinoma and high-grade "dedifferentiated" carcinoma. We examined six cases and analyzed their clinicopathologic profiles, including immunohistochemical features and p53 gene alterations. The 6 patients (3 men and 3 women) had a mean age of 46.8 years (range, 34-70 y). The mean size of the tumors was 3.5 cm (range, 1.7-6 cm). The submandibular gland, maxillary sinus, and nasal cavity were involved in

We report the case of a 74-year-old woman who developed a follicular ameloblastoma of the right mandible and 22 months later developed a cribriform adenoid cystic carcinoma of the soft palate on the right maxilla. The ameloblastoma was treated by hemimandibulectomy, and the adenoid cystic carcinoma was managed by resection of the soft palate and the surrounding tissue and bone followed by a 6-week course of radiotherapy. Our review of the literature indicates that only one similar case has been previously reported where an odontogenic tumor and a salivary gland tumor involved two different ana

INTRODUCTION: The adenoid cystic carcinoma or cylindroma of the nasopharynx is a rare tumour characterised by its slow progression, high risk of local recurrence and prolonged survival, even in the locally advanced and/or metastatic forms. Treatment is pluridisciplinary.
OBSERVATION: In a 30 year-old man consulting for right retroauricular pain, hypoacousia and epistaxis, diagnosis of a nasopharyngeal cylindroma was made in 1994. Treatment consisted first line surgery combined with loco-regional radiotherapy. Twenty-six months after complete remission had been obtained, a loco-regional relaps

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have been suggested the possible role of adenoid mast cells in the pathogenesis of otitis media with effusion (OME). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the possible relationship of adenoid mast cells and hearing loss in patients with chronic OME.
METHODS: Twenty patients with combined chronic OME and chronic adenoiditis (OME-A) and 20 patients with isolated chronic adenoiditis were studied. Hearing thresholds were determined by pure tone audiometry in both groups. All subjects underwent adenoidectomy and adenoid mast cells were counted in each specimen. N
