Infant fat mass and later child and adolescent health outcomes: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity and excess adiposity are leading causes of metabolic and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Early identification of individuals at risk is key for preventive strategies. We examined the relationship between infant body composition (0-2 years of age) and later (>2 years) health outcomes using a systematic review. DESIGN: We preregistered the study on PROSPERO (ID 288013) and searched Embase, PubMed and Cochrane databases for English language publications using the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms 'infant' and 'body composition' and 'risk' between January 1946 and F

Association of self-reported mother-infant relationship with child and adolescent mental health.

BACKGROUND: The quality of the relationship between mother and infant may have profound implications for the development of a child. Early indicators of psychological vulnerability may allow targeting of support for the child's cognitive, emotional and social development. A challenging mother-infant relationship could be one indicator of risk. AIMS: This study examined variations in psychological well-being and psychopathology among boys and girls according to early maternal perception of the mother-infant relationship. METHOD: This study is based on 64 663 mother-infant pairs from the Danis

Mental health and care utilization in survivors of adolescent and young adult cancer.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent and young adult cancer survivors experience mental health challenges, yet little is known about the evolution of these difficulties. This study explored mental health symptoms and utilization among long-term adolescent and young adult cancer survivors. METHODS: Using 30 432 respondents from the 2019 National Health Interview Survey, this study compared adults with a history of adolescent and young adult cancer (diagnosed when patients were between 15 and 39 years of age) to adults without adolescent and young adult cancer. Mental health symptom severity was measured usi

Global child and adolescent mental health perspectives: bringing change locally, while thinking globally.

Child and adolescent mental health (CAMH) are a global priority. Different countries across the globe face unique challenges in CAMH services that are specific to them. However, there are multiple issues that are also similar across countries. These issues have been presented in this commentary from the lens of early career CAMH professionals who are alumni of the Donald J Cohen Fellowship program of the IACAPAP. We also present recommendations that can be implemented locally, namely, how promoting mental health and development of children and adolescents can result in better awareness and int

Case series: Adolescent victims of the vaping public health crisis with pulmonary complications.

Alongside the epidemic use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) across the country, evidence of multiple pulmonary complications has emerged, with the most immediately life-threatening being the new clinical condition of e-cigarette/vaping-associated lung injury (EVALI), with investigation actively underway to further define this entity and determine the cause or causes. We present a series of cases of respiratory illnesses associated with e-cigarette use, many of which meet criteria for suspected or confirmed EVALI, managed at a pediatric tertiary care center, demonstrating notable variati

Childhood and adolescent sexual abuse, victim profile and its impacts on mental health.

This work aims to analyze the impact of childhood and adolescent sexual abuse on variables related to mental health and to identify the characteristics of the victims. To achieve this objective, microdata of the National School Health Survey 2015 was used, applying the methodology of Propensity Score Matching. The results show that the abused youth has a unique behavioral, familiar and socioeconomic profile and that they are more likely to use alcohol and drugs, be victim of bullying, to be in age-grade lag, to be employed and not to intend to continue studying. From a familiar point of view,

Interventions using new digital media to improve adolescent sexual health: a systematic review.

New digital media (e.g., the Internet, text messaging, and social networking sites [SNS]) have dramatically altered the communication landscape, especially for youth. These communication platforms present new tools for engaging youth in sexual health promotion and risk reduction. We searched eight public databases across multiple disciplines for all peer-reviewed studies published between January 2000 and May 2011 that empirically evaluated the impact of digital media-based interventions on the sexual health knowledge, attitudes, and/or behaviors of adolescents aged 13-24 years. Of 942 abstrac
