"Phantom limb" is a well-known phenomenon following loss or amputation of a limb. The limb still seems to be present, although it is no longer there, but the sensation is not associated with pain. Less well-known are the phenomena of autosomatognosis and pain after the loss of other parts of the body such as the genital parts or after partial or complete deafferentiations as in a traumatic transverse syndrome, lesion of the brachial plexus, or lesions of the CNS. Although many hypotheses have been advanced to explain the pathophysiological mechanisms resulting in these phenomena, the pathogene

Selective affinity between afferent neurons has been proposed as a major mechanism underlying the assembly of the insect peripheral nervous system during development. Afferent insect neurons establish adhesive interactions in vivo that are resistant to proteolytic degradation by elastase and independent of the basal lamina. We have tested whether afferent neurons express selective affinity for one another under more simplified and controlled conditions in vitro. We report here that (1) afferent neurons from dissociated embryonic tissue selectively aggregate within 80 min when incubated with ro

This study used anterograde transport of horseradish peroxidase to identify primary projections of the anterior and posterior lateral line nerves in the oyster toadfish, Opsanus tau. Both lateralis nerves project to the nucleus medialis and nucleus caudalis, which comprise a continuous lateralis cell column. Separation between nucleus medialis and nucleus caudalis is based on cell type and position. Unlike the primitive condition, the nuclei are not obviously separable on the basis of gross topography. The anterior lateral line nerve projects to the ventral area, and the posterior lateral line

With only a few exceptions, most investigations of the mechanisms involved in naturally-occurring neuron death have focused on interactions between neurons and their targets, with much less attention having been paid to the possible role of the afferent inputs in this phenomenon. This is true of the avian ciliary ganglion (CG), which is composed of a population of peripheral autonomic neurons that project to smooth and striated musculature in the eye and which receive afferents from a single source, the accessory oculomotor nucleus (AON), which is the avian homolog of the Edinger-Westphal nucl

In the preceding paper, we describe how dopamine, octopamine, and serotonin modulate the neural circuit generating a well-described motor pattern, the pyloric rhythm of the stomatogastric ganglion in the spiny lobster, Panulirus interruptus. In this paper, we identify the neurons within the pyloric circuit that are directly affected by each amine. We accomplished this by isolating each pyloric neuron from all known synaptic input, using a combination of Lucifer yellow photoinactivation of presynaptic neurons and pharmacological blockade by pyloric neurotransmitters. Dopamine, octopamine, and s

Thalamic projections to the motor cortex have been studied in the cat by injecting small amounts of horseradish peroxidase in different parts of areas 4 and 6. The nuclei which more abundantly project to the motor cortex are the ventral anterior-ventral lateral complex, the ventral medial and the posterior complex. These projections are topographically organized. Other projections arise from the ventral postero-lateral, ventral postero-inferior, central lateral, central medial, medial dorsal, lateral posterior-pulvinar, suprageniculate and centrum medianum-parafascicular nuclei.

Comparing results of extirpation of the thyroid gland with those obtained at cutting tissues without extirpation of the gland in 1.5--2-month-old pigs of both sex, it was possible to reveal that there are numerous sources of afferent innervation of the thyroid gland in these animals. They include the distal ganglion of the vagus nerve and the cerebrospinal ganglia C1-C6. An essential amount of cells participating in the innervation belong to the distal ganglia of the vagus nerve (main sources), other ganglia concentrate but a small amount of similar neurons (additional sources). A considerable

The possibility that pathways of retinal fibers within the optic tract and the tectum of the adult newt are retinotopic was examined by selective labeling of the retinal fibers with horseradish peroxidase. Within the optic tract fibers from the ventral, temporal and dorsal retinal quadrants were ordered from the dorsal to ventral edges of th optic tract. The nasal retinal fibers exhibited two different pathways. The fibers from the dorsonasal retina ran along the ventral edge of the optic tract, while the fibers from the ventronasal retina ran along the dorsal edge of the optic tract. Segregat

The precise site of termination of primary afferents from the carotid chemoreceptors, has not been revealed as yet by anatomical or physiological studies. Identified units in the dorsal and ventral respiratory groups in the medulla can be evoked by chemoreceptor stimulation during inspiration, and inhibited by stimulation during expiration. Thus chemoreceptor input appears to be gated by an unidentified population of respiratory units before it reaches the recognized populations. For this as well as other reasons, we propose that chemoreceptor fibers terminate on a population of small interneu

The projection of the vestibular nerve to the cerebellum of the cat was examined with silver degeneration methods after complete lesions of the vestibular ganglion. The majority of the primary vestibular afferents were traced to the cortex of the ipsilateral nodulus and uvula, relatively fewer entering the ipsilateral flocculus. Fibers were not traced to the paraflocculus, lingula or lateral cerebellar nucleus. A sparse projection to the ipsilateral fastigial nucleus may exist, but it remains equivocal until confirmed with additional methods. Light microscopic examination of plastic sections c

OBJECTIVE: Intense air-conducted sound (ACS) elicits an ocular vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (oVEMP), and it has been suggested that it does so by stimulating saccular receptors and afferents in the inferior vestibular nerve and so activating a crossed sacculo-ocular pathway. Bone conducted vibration (BCV) also elicits an oVEMP probably by activating utricular receptors and a crossed utriculo-ocular pathway. Are there two separate pathways mediating oVEMPs for ACS and BCV? If saccular receptors and afferents are primarily responsible for the oVEMP to ACS, then the oVEMP to ACS should be

Articular inflammation is a major clinical burden in multiple inflammatory diseases, especially in rheumatoid arthritis. Biological anti-rheumatic drug therapies are expensive and increase the risk of systemic immunosuppression, infections, and malignancies. Here, we report that vagus nerve stimulation controls arthritic joint inflammation by inducing local regulation of innate immune response. Most of the previous studies of neuromodulation focused on vagal regulation of inflammation via the efferent peripheral pathway toward the viscera. Here, we report that vagal stimulation modulates arthr

Both respiratory centres and the preganglionic vagal motoneurones, which control respiratory (striated) and airway (smooth) muscles respectively, receive information on the lungs, the circulation and the skeletal and respiratory muscles. Each of these nervous pathways has two components: one is phasic, i.e. in phase with biological rhythms, and comes from mechanoreceptors connected to large myelinated fibres; the second has a tonic low frequency firing rate and corresponds to the spontaneous activity of polymodal receptors connected to thin sensory fibres, which act mostly as sensors of change

The auditory sector of the thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN) plays a pivotal role in gain and/or gate control of auditory input relayed from the thalamus to cortex. The TRN is also likely involved in cross-modal sensory processing for attentional gating function. In the present study, we anatomically examined how cortical and thalamic afferents intersect in the auditory TRN with regard to these two functional pathways. Iontophoretic injections of biocytin into subregions of the auditory TRN, which were made with the guidance of electrophysiological recording of auditory response, resulted in re

1. Intracellular recordings were made, in vitro, from neurones of guinea-pig inferior mesenteric ganglia (IMG) attached, via the lumbar colonic nerves, to segments of distal colon. 2. 'Spontaneous' synaptic input from colonic afferent fibres was observed in 79% of the neurones tested. In any given preparation, the level and pattern of this synaptic input to different neurones varied considerably. 3. Superfusion of colonic segments with drugs (papaverine, isoprenaline, and adenosine triphosphate) which reduce colonic motility decreased colonic afferent input to IMG neurones. 4. Superfusion of c

KEY POINTS: There is clinical evidence showing that prostatic inflammation contributes to overactive bladder symptoms in male patients; however, little is known about the underlying mechanisms In this study, we investigated the mechanism that prostatic inflammation causes detrusor overactivity by using a rat model of chemically induced prostatic inflammation. We observed a significant number of dorsal root ganglion neurons with dichotomized afferents innervating both prostate and bladder. We also found that prostatic inflammation induces bladder overactivity and urothelial NGF overexpression i

The external lateral parabrachial nucleus (elPBN) within the pons and rostral ventrolateral medulla (rVLM) contributes to central processing of excitatory cardiovascular reflexes during stimulation of cardiac sympathetic afferent nerves (CSAN). However, the importance of elPBN cardiovascular neurons in regulation of rVLM activity during CSAN activation remains unclear. We hypothesized that CSAN stimulation excites the elPBN cardiovascular neurons and, in turn, increases rVLM activity through elPBN-rVLM projections. Compared with controls, in rats subjected to microinjection of retrograde trace

Little is known about the central projection patterns of trigeminal afferent neurons expressing the vanilloid receptor TRPV1 and their coexpression of neuromodulatory peptides. To address these issues, we examined the distribution of TRPV1-positive neurons in the trigeminal ganglion (TG) and trigeminal sensory nuclei principalis (Vp), oralis (Vo), interpolaris (Vi), and caudalis (Vc) in the rat via light and electron microscopy. In addition, we studied the colocalization of TRPV1-positive neurons with substance P (SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) via confocal microscopy. In TG, o
