[Feminism and interventions with women; an experience with female alcoholics and drug abusers at Domremy Trois-Rivieres].

With the advent of feminist ideology, women believed they could fashion made-to-measure tools to end their oppression and emancipate themselves. However, passing from ideology to practice has led to a certain number of difficulties. On the other hand, the feminist viewpoint has made a major and undeniable contribution to society. This article discusses the trials and tribulations as well as the successes of feminist practice.

Alcohol and absorption from the small intestine. 1. Impairment of absorption from the small intestine in alcoholics.

An absorption screen was performed in 10 chronic alcoholic patients within a few days of admission due to an acute alcoholic episode. Impaired absorption of d-Xylose was noted in three patients and low leucocyte ascorbic acid and serum folate levels in five. No abnormality was detected in jejunal histology. The absorption of water and electrolytes from the jejunum was studied in these patients using a triple-lumen tube perfusion system. The mean rate of absorption of water in the alcoholic subjects (50-0 +/- 2-3 ml/h) was significantly lower (P less than 0-001) than the mean value in 14 health

[Treatment of acute alcoholic alcoholism].

Acute alcoholic hepatitis is the first alcoholic lesion of the liver in the process of progression to cirrhosis. It is due to the toxic action of alcohol on hepatocytes, in particular in the centrolobular region. It may affect a liver which is the site of fatty infiltration, fibrosis or cirrhosis, i.e. during all the stages of alcoholic liver disease. Its severity depends upon the degree of alcoholic intoxication. It may be fatal by malignant hepatic failure in a quarter of cases or, at the extreme, be totally asymptomatic. The aims of treatment are: 1) in the immediate, to prevent death; 2) s

Efficacy of 12-step mutual-help groups other than Alcoholics Anonymous: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

This paper offers a systematic review of quantitative and qualitative studies on the main twelve-step mutual-help (TSMH) groups (excluding Alcoholics Anonymous) and four meta-analyses exploring the correlation between (i) duration or involvement in TSMH groups and; (ii) severity of symptoms or quality of life. Systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Searches of databases (MEDLINE, PsychInfo), a register (ClinicalTrials) and citations were conducted, from inception through November 01 2022. Fifty five articles were included (24 quantitative, 27 qualitative, 4 mixed-methods)…

Detection and qualitative analysis of fatty acid amides in the urine of alcoholics using HPLC-QTOF-MS.

Fatty acid amides (FAAs) in alcoholism lead to liver diseases. These amides have been reported in plasma and in other organs of the body, while their detection or presence in the urine is still unknown. Therefore, the focus of the current study was to detect and analyze FAAs qualitatively in urine samples of alcoholics. Furthermore, the effects of Tinospora cordifolia (hepatoprotective medicinal plant) intervention on FAA levels in moderate alcoholics were also analyzed. In the study, asymptomatic chronic alcoholics (n = 22) without chronic liver disease and nonalcoholic healthy volunteers (n …

Functional vitamin B12 deficiency in alcoholics: an intriguing finding in a retrospective study of megaloblastic anemic patients.

BACKGROUND: Measurement of serum cobalamin levels is the standard investigation for assessing Vitamin B12 deficiency. However some patients … tic anemia may respond to vitamin B12 treatment despite normal cobalamin serum levels; therefore in alcoholics caution is urged in the interpretation of these vitamin assays, because of possible functional vitamin B12 deficiency.

Magnetic resonance imaging of the living brain: evidence for brain degeneration among alcoholics and recovery with abstinence.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides a safe, noninvasive method to examine the brain's macrostructure, microstructure, and some aspects of how the living brain functions. MRI is capable of detecting abnormalities that can occur with alcoholism as well as changes that can occur with sobriety and relapse. The brain pathology associated with chronic excessive alcohol consumption is well documented with imaging of the living body (i.e., in vivo imaging). Consistent findings include shrinkage of the frontal cortex,1 underlying white matter, and cerebellum and expansion of the ventricles. Some

Effects of Logo-autobiography Program on Meaning in Life and Mental Health in the Wives of Alcoholics.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify the effectiveness of a newly developed group therapy, called the logo-autobiography program, in improving meaning in life and mental health in the wives of alcoholics. METHODS: The program was developed in four steps: literature review, pilot program development, pilot study and detailed program structuring. The pilot program was developed by combining a modified guided autobiography program with logotherapy. A non-randomized controlled trial was conducted with a pre- and post-test design. The instruments chosen for the study were the Purpose in Life (PIL…

Intervention at the level of the neuroendocrine-immune axis and postoperative pneumonia rate in long-term alcoholics.

RATIONALE: Postoperative pneumonia is three to four times more frequent in patients with alcohol use disorders followed by prolonged intensive care unit (ICU) stay. Long-term alcohol use leads to an altered perioperative hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and immunity. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate HPA intervention with low-dose ethanol, morphine, or ketoconazole on the neuroendocrine-immune axis and development of postoperative pneumonia in long-term alcoholic patients. METHODS: In this randomized, double-blind controlled study, 122 consecutive patients undergoing

Impulsivity in abstinent early- and late-onset alcoholics: differences in self-report measures and a discounting task.

AIMS: To test the hypothesis that early-onset alcoholics (EOAs) can be differentiated from late-onset alcoholics (LOAs) by more severe substance-related problems and higher levels of impulsivity and aggression. DESIGN AND MEASUREMENTS: A cross-sectional patient survey with a community comparison group. The European Addiction Severity Index was used to assess substance-related problems and the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, the Dutch version of the Zuckermann Sensation Seeking Scale and the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory were used to assess impulsive and aggressive traits. Impulsive decision ma…

Systematic regional study of dopamine, norsalsolinol, and (R/S)-salsolinol levels in human brain areas of alcoholics.

BACKGROUND: Dopamine (DA)-derived tetrahydroisoquinolines (TIQs) are discussed as neurochemical factors of addiction processes in alcoholism. In a prospective study, the regional distribution of DA, (R)-salsolinol (SAL), and (S)-SAL, as well as norsalsolinol (NorSAL) was examined systematically in a large collective of human brain samples obtained by autopsy. METHODS: The material comprises 44 brains of alcoholics and 47 controls with 6 standardized specimens in each case. The analytes were determined after solid-phase extraction and enantioselective derivatization using gas chromatography-ma…

Substance-induced and independent major depressive disorder in treatment-seeking alcoholics: associations with dysfunctional attitudes and coping.

OBJECTIVE: This study examines the validity of the distinction between substance-induced and independent major depressive disorder (MDD) among alcoholics utilizing variables theoretically linked to the etiology and course of depression: specifically dimensions of coping and dysfunctional attitudes about the self that can lead to extreme negative interpretations of life events. METHOD: Participants were 166 alcohol-dependent patients with elevated depressive symptoms. Comparisons were made between participants who met criteria for a current substance-induced major depressive episode and did no…

Serotonin transporter promoter polymorphism genotype is associated with behavioral disinhibition and negative affect in children of alcoholics.

BACKGROUND: Serotonergic (5-HT) dysfunction has been implicated in the etiology of both behavioral disinhibition (BD) and negative affect (NA). This work extends our previous finding of relationships between whole blood 5-HT and both BD and NA in pubescent, but not prepubescent, children of alcoholics and continues examination of a hypothesized role of 5-HT dysfunction in alcoholism risk. The long and short (L and S) variants of the 5-HT transporter gene-linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR) are responsible for differing transcriptional efficiencies in 5-HT uptake. Although associations have be…

Naltrexone and cognitive behavioral therapy for the treatment of outpatient alcoholics: results of a placebo-controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: The opiate antagonist drug naltrexone has been shown in a few studies with limited sample sizes to be effective when combined with psychosocial therapies for the treatment of alcohol dependence. The goal of this study was to obtain additional information regarding its efficacy in pertinent alcoholic populations and with a well-defined therapy. METHOD: In this study, 131 recently abstinent alcohol-dependent outpatients were treated with 12 weekly sessions of manual-guided cognitive behavioral therapy and either 50 mg/day of naltrexone (N = 68) or placebo (N = 63) (with riboflavin ad

[Comparative study of the relationship between alexithymia and affective dependence on 60 alcoholics and 57 control subjects].

UNLABELLED: Several authors have shown that alexithymia characterizes patients suffering from substance abuses. Moreover emotional and perceptual dependencies have also been described in these disorders. The aim of this study is to test two hypotheses: First that the emotional components of alexithymia and dependency were linked in alcoholics and secondly that the cognitive components of these two dimensions were also linked in these subjects. Two groups were recruited: 60 inpatients filled out the DSM IV criteria for alcohol dependence and 57 healthy subjects were the controls. All the subjec…
