[Alcoholism and aging. 2. Alcoholic dementia or alcoholic cognitive impairment?].

Chronic alcohol consumption results in considerable damage to many of the body's organs, and particularly to the brain. Beyond the confusion … This paper presents the epidemiological, neuropathological, neurochemical and clinical data on ARD. Alcoholism is responsible for cognitive deficits of various severity, which could be reversible or not with alcohol abstinence, but can also participate to the cognitive impairment related to other pathologies, such as Alzheimer disease. On account of this rev …

Relationship between neuropsychological and emotional functioning in severe chronic alcoholism.

Previous studies of patients with severe chronic alcoholism have shown a high prevalence of emotional distress such as anxiety and depression, and neuropsychological impairments such as executive deficits, but few have examined the relationship between these disorders. We addressed this issue in 51 abstinent patients with histories of severe chronic alcoholism utilizing the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and the Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Test Battery (HRNTB). Applying factor analysis to the MMPI clinical and validity scales, we derived four dimensions accounting fo…

Sensory-perceptual dysfunction in patients with schizophrenia and comorbid alcoholism.

We studied the effects of aging and comorbid alcoholism on sensory-perceptual dysfunction in patients with schizophrenia. Using sensory-perceptual tests from the Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Battery included in the Russell, Neuringer, and Goldstein (1970) Perceptual Disorders Index, samples were compared of 54 patients with comorbid schizophrenia and alcoholism, 234 patients with schizophrenia but no history of alcoholism, 132 patients with chronic alcoholism and 171 patient controls. Data were analyzed by one-way analyses of variance followed by Scheffe multiple comparison tests. Numero…

Subacute encephalopathy with epileptic seizures in alcoholism (SESA): case report.

The case of a 66-year-old patient is reported in view of the rarity of his condition: a case of subacute encephalopathy with seizures in alcoholics (SESA syndrome), described first in 1981 by Niedermeyer, et al. Wernicke-type aphasia, epileptic seizures (generalized tonic-clonic) and PLEDs EEG pattern dominated the neurological picture, in addition to hepatomegaly and rhabdomyolysis. This condition differs from all other known CNS complications in chronic alcoholism and is withdrawal-independent. It is prognostically favorable as far as the syndrome as such is concerned.

Older adult treatment outcome following elder-specific inpatient alcoholism treatment.

This study examined multidimensional 6-month outcomes of elder-specific inpatient alcoholism treatment for 90 participants over the age of 55. At baseline, physical health functioning was similar to that reported by seriously medically ill inpatients in other studies while psychosocial functioning was worse, and nearly one third of the sample had comorbid psychiatric disorders. Based on 6-month outcomes, participants were classified into the following groups: Abstainers, Non-Binge Drinkers, and Binge Drinkers. The groups did not differ on any baseline measures (demographics, drinking history, …

[Psychotic and non-psychotic manifestations of alcoholism in forensic psychiatry].

The paper presents the results of examination of 110 alcoholic patients who have committed criminal actions and were recognized as irresponsible at forensic examination. It was established that wide spectrum of mental disorders were present in such cases--from superacute psychotic states (15 patients) and acute disorders (49) to chronic psychoses (33) and encephalopathy (13). According to clinical manifestations mental disorders correspond in such cases to reactions of exogenic type. In contrast to general medical departments where patients with alcoholic delirium prevail, the studied sample o

Recurrent personal memories during intoxication reported by patients with alcoholism.

BACKGROUND: Experimental studies have demonstrated that alcohol has state-dependent effects on learning and memory. We, therefore, sought to determine if alcohol intoxication triggers selective retrieval of memories which could alter patterns of alcohol use. METHODS: Eighteen alcoholic patients were studied as well as a comparison group of 12 patients who abused cocaine, a drug not associated with memory state-dependence. Patients underwent a semi-structured interview to elicit information about recurrent personal memories experienced when intoxicated. Recurrent memories experienced during cr

Alcoholism in a geriatric outpatient clinic of São Paulo-Brazil.

Alcohol abuse and dependence are an increasing health problem among the elderly, but there is only scanty information about their prevalence and associated risk factors in developing countries. The authors set out to evaluate the prevalence and associated clinical/demographic features of alcoholism in a sample of male elderly subjects attending a Geriatric Primary Health Outpatient Clinic in a State University Hospital in the City of São Paulo-Brazil. Three hundred four patients were assessed with the Brazilian version of the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test and a semistructured questionnair…

[The efficacy and mechanisms of action of lerivon in alcoholism].

Clinico-biological examination of 50 alcoholic patients was carried out. 30 patients were treated with lerivon (L) during 1 month. 15 control patients received amitriptylin for 1 month and 15 patients received relanium for 7 days. It was determined that L was quite effective in treatment of depression in alcoholic patients. The main L effects were anxiolytic, antidepressive and hypnotic. The drug also decreased alcohol addiction, had vegetostabilising and sedative effects. The conclusion was made on pathogenetic action of L in alcoholism: It influences upon dopaminergic mediation in catecholam…

Pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy for the treatment of alcoholism in Germany.

Although past alcoholism treatment in Germany has primarily focused on psychotherapy, new advances in pharmacotherapy are expanding therapeutic options. Recent biomedical studies have produced new theories about how alcohol affects neurotransmitters in the brain. These studies have led to new pharmacologic strategies for the treatment of alcoholism using dopamine agonists and antagonists, serotoninergic agents, glutamate antagonists, and opiate antagonists. While preliminary studies of these agents offer encouraging results, it remains to be demonstrated which agent(s) will provide effective p…

[Experience in using ketamine preparations in the psychotherapy of alcoholism].

After careful clinical examination 64 alcoholics (48 males and 16 females) aged 21-52 were assigned to ketamin aversive psychotherapeutic procedure supposed to make the patients emotionally concerned with their disease and suggestible of alcohol intolerance. Ketamin caused in 55 patients (85.5%) oneiroid clouding of consciousness with occasional catatonic inclusions, 9 patients (14.5%) became delirious. Ketamin-induced high suggestibility created beneficial conditions for psychotherapy. A 2-year follow-up of 42 patients registered complete abstinence in 15 patients. The results obtained with k

Electroencephalographic, autonomic and subjective reactions to alcohol were examined among 78 young nonalcoholic men, cross-classified with respect to the presence/absence of a family history of alcoholism (FH) and the presence/absence of a personal history of antisocial personality disorder (ASP). Both an alcohol placebo and alcohol (0.32 ml/kg) were administered in a single laboratory session. The four groups of subjects were compared at baseline, and at several discrete time points before and after consumption of placebo and alcoholic beverages. Alcoholism in treatment-seeking cocaine abusers: clinical and prognostic significance.

Two hundred ninety-eight treatment-seeking and 101 community cocaine abusers were interviewed using the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Research Diagnostic Criteria. Alcoholism was the most frequently diagnosed current and lifetime psychiatric disorder in both samples. Several findings from this study converge with recent evidence which suggests a particularly strong relationship between cocaine abuse and alcoholism that may differ from other types of alcohol-drug comorbidity. First, rates of alcoholism among cocaine abusers doubled those of comparable samples of opioid addicts. Second, w…
