Dual-responsive magnetoliposome-stabilized Pickering emulsion alginate hydrogel beads for oral drug delivery.

Magnetoliposomes (MLPs) are hybrid nanostructures formed by incorporating superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) into phospholipid bilayers that resemble biological membranes. Their biocompatibility, magnetic responsiveness, and tunable surface properties make them attractive colloidal systems for the design of advanced materials. In the context of Pickering emulsions, MLP serves as an effective stabilizer at the oil-water interface, offering both steric and magnetic control over emulsion stability. Their amphiphilic nature allows them to anchor at the interface, while the embedde

Flexible wearable electronic devices have gained widespread attention due to their comfort and real-time information transmission capabilities. However, they often exhibit poor stretchability, low sensitivity, and limited functionality, which restricts their practical applications. Herein, a conductive hydrogel (PNAL, a polymer synthesized from polyvinyl alcohol, nipaam, acrylic acid, and lithium chloride) that responds to both strain and temperature simultaneously was developed using a natural polysaccharide composite (SA-AGE) synthesized from sodium alginate (SA) and allyl glycidyl ether (AG

Highly flexible thermoresponsive alginate-containing hydrogels: Curcuminoid encapsulation and its release kinetics and mechanism.

This study developed upper critical solution temperature (UCST)-responsive semi-interpenetrating network (semi-IPN) hydrogels incorporating poly (acrylic acid-co-acrylamide) (P(AA-co-AM)) and alginate via one-pot free radical polymerization for controlled curcuminoid extract release. Alginate was incorporated to improve the hydrogel's mechanical properties while preserving the UCST responsiveness of P(AA-co-AM). It enhanced swelling capacity, elasticity, and network uniformity. Morphological analysis revealed a uniform porous network, and mechanical testing confirmed optimal flexibility at 5 %

Urological Applications of Novel Hyaluronic Acid/Alginate Gel to Protect Nerves: A Single-Surgeon Experience.

Background Tissue gliding and mobility are crucial for the success of penile procedures, as postoperative adhesions can lead to painful tethering of tissues, including nerves. While most commercially available options are not designed to reduce friction and/or often have inconsistent bioresorption, a novel hyaluronic acid/alginate hydrogel represents a significant advancement in reducing postoperative tissue adhesions. This study aimed to evaluate its intra-operative application in pediatric and adult urologic surgeries with associated indications and postoperative outcomes (re-admission, re-o

Clinical Outcomes and Safety Profile of a Novel Hyaluronic Acid/Alginate Hydrogel in Hand and Microsurgical Procedures.

BACKGROUND: Soft tissue adhesions following hand and microsurgical procedures are frequent and debilitating complications, limiting tendon gliding, entrapping nerves, and impairing outcomes. A fully resorbable hyaluronic acid/alginate hydrogel, available in sheet and gel formulations, was introduced to mitigate adhesion formation. This study aimed to (1) assess hydrogel application across varied tissue environments, (2) evaluate perioperative complication rates, and (3) compare outcomes between the 2 forms. METHODS: A retrospective review of 83 complex hand and microsurgery cases at a single

Co-spray dried inhalable composite powders of ciprofloxacin and alginate oligosaccharide as anti-biofilm therapy.

The treatment of chronic respiratory infections caused by biofilm formation are extremely challenging owing to poor drug penetration into the complex biofilm structure and high drug resistance. Local delivery of an antibiotic together with a non-antibiotic adjuvant to the lungs could often enhance the therapeutic responses by targeting different bacterial growth pathways and minimizing drug resistance. In this study, we designed new inhalable dry powders containing ciprofloxacin (CIP) and OligoG (Oli, a low-molecular-weight alginate oligosaccharide impairing the mucoid biofilms by interacting

BACKGROUND: Patients with cystic fibrosis commonly suffer from lung infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Recently, the Levofloxacin (LVF) nebulizing solution (Quinsair®) has been prescribed for the antimicrobial management. The sustained-release (SR) dry powder formulation of LVF is a convenient alternative to Quinsair®. It has the potential to enhance patient convenience and decrease the likelihood of drug resistance over time. OBJECTIVE: In this paper, we set forth to formulate and evaluate the potential application of sodium alginate (SA) and sodium carboxymethylcellulose (SCMC) fo

Experimental Study on the Strength Deterioration and Mechanism of Stabilized River Silt Reinforced with Cement and Alginate Fibers.

River silt deposited by water in coastal areas is unsuitable for engineering construction. Thus, the in situ stabilization treatment of river silt as the bearing layer has been an important research area in geotechnical engineering. The strength degradation behavior and mechanism of stabilized river silt reinforced with cement and alginate fibers (AFCS) in different engineering environments are crucial for engineering applications. Therefore, freeze-thaw (F-T) cycle tests, wetting-drying (W-D) cycle tests, water immersion tests and seawater erosion tests were conducted to explore the strength

Methylene Blue Solid Alginate Gels for Photodynamic Therapy: The Peculiarities of Production and Controlled Release of the Dye.

The purpose of this work is to establish the influence of the nature of solid alginate gels (alginic acid, AAG; calcium alginate, CAG) and the conditions of methylene blue (MB) introduction to alginate matrices upon its release into aqueous media. MB is an active photosensitizer, which is used in the photodynamic therapy of tumors and purulent wounds. Solid alginate gels based on AAG and CAG were obtained by adding hydrochloric acid and calcium chloride to sodium alginate. The dye was introduced into the matrix either at the stage of gelation or by immersing the gel in an aqueous solution of t

The impact of copper nanoparticles surfactant on the structural and biological properties of chitosan/sodium alginate wound dressings.

Multifunctional wound dressings based on hydrogels are an efficacious and practicable strategy in therapeutic processes and accelerated chronic wound healing. Here, copper (Cu) nanoparticles were added to chitosan/sodium alginate (CS/SA) hydrogels to improve the antibacterial properties of the prepared wound dressings. Due to the super-hydrophobicity of Cu nanoparticles, polyethylene glycol (PEG) was used as a surfactant, and then added to the CS/SA-based hydrogels. The CS/SA/Cu hydrogels were synthesized with 0, 2, 3.5, and 5 wt% Cu nanoparticles. The structural and morphological properties i

Heat-treated alginate-polycaprolactone core-shell nanofibers by emulsion electrospinning process for biomedical applications.

Fabrication of Core-shell nanofibrous mat which is a promising tool for a wide range of applications in tissue engineering can be developed using water in oil (W/O) or oil in water (O/W) emulsion electrospinning. In this study, for the first time, we fabricated an O/W emulsion-based electrospun core-shell mat using polycaprolactone (PCL) as a core and the blend solution of alginate (Alg) and polyethylene oxide (PEO) as shell material. To achieve a stable core-shell mat, firstly, Alg was modified with heat treatment to decrease the molecular weight of Alg. Then, to improve the chain flexibility

Oriented Alginate-Poly(vinyl alcohol) Electrospun Nanofibers for Multimodal Sensing and Gesture Language Recognition.

Flexible nanofiber sensors have gained substantial attention in extending application scenarios owing to their desirable lightweight, comfort, and breathability. Nevertheless, disorder and uneven dimension issues of nanofibers are the leading concerns in their multifunctional response, which often leads to erratic response signals as well as poor linearity. In this work, a high-performance oriented nanofiber film with a three-dimensional network consisting of alginate sodium, poly(vinyl alcohol), and poly(ethylene oxide) was successfully fabricated by a controllable directional electrospinning

The influence of sodium alginate on the structural and adsorption properties of resorcinol-formaldehyde resins and their porous carbon derivatives.

A series of carbon composites were synthesised by carbonisation of resorcinol-formaldehyde resin mixtures with the addition of different amounts of sodium alginate (SA) and compared with a composite prepared using Na2 CO3 as a catalyst for the polymerisation reaction. The effect of operating parameters such as SA concentration and polycondensation time on the structural and morphological properties of resorcinol-formaldehyde resins (RFR) and carbon-derived composites was investigated for further use as adsorbents. The synthesised composites were characterised by FTIR, SEM, Raman spectroscopy a

Fabrication of Ca-alginate microspheres by diffusion-induced gelation in double emulsion droplets for oral insulin.

Sodium alginate has good biocompatibility and is widely used in the study of drug carriers. In this paper, a method to prepare calcium alginate microspheres with high sphericity based on double emulsion droplets was proposed, in which sodium alginate is used as the innermost phase. By adjusting the density of the system, the double-emulsion droplets could be suspended in the collecting solution, leading to the homogeneous reaction between the sodium alginate droplets and the calcium ions. By changing the flow rate, the size of the droplets could be changed, and by changing the concentration of

Self-healing, 3D printed bioinks from self-assembled peptide and alginate hybrid hydrogels.

There is a pressing need for new cell-laden, printable, biomaterials that are rigid and highly biocompatible. These materials can mimic stiffer tissues such as cartilage, fibrotic tissue and cancer microenvironments, and thus have exciting applications in regenerative medicine, wound healing and cancer research. Self-assembled peptides (SAPs) functionalised with aromatic groups such as Fluorenyl-9-methoxycarbonyl (Fmoc) show promise as components of these biomaterials. However, the harsh basic conditions often used to solubilise SAPs leads to issues with toxicity and reproducibility. Here, we

Compression-induced apoptosis of fibroblasts and myofibroblasts in an in vitro model of pulmonary fibrosis by alginate/gelatin scaffold.

Pulmonary fibrosis leads to increased mortality but is poorly understood. Fibrotic progression is associated with abnormal wound repair and an increase in myofibroblast cell populations. Here we investigate how the myofibroblast population is impacted by unique compression-induced apoptosis derived from mechanical strain characteristic of asthma. Using a mechanical device, both static and dynamic mechanical strains were applied to alginate/gelatin/CaCl2 scaffolds containing fibroblasts and myofibroblasts. As cell groups were stimulated with 30 % static strain for 12 h, fibroblast and myofibrob
