Mass screening of medicinal plants of the flora of Russia (196 species) was performed for chromium content. A total of 124 species-chromium … ion of its deficiency in humans. Some mechanisms underlying the effect of chromium on metabolism of alkaloids derivative of quinolizidine, tropane, isoquinoline, and indole, were deciphered.

The action of the cervane alkaloid, imperialine, has been assessed at M1, M2 and M3 receptors in functional assays and at M1, M2, M3 and putative M4 sites in binding studies. In functional studies, imperialine acted as a selective surmountable antagonist at M2 receptors in guinea-pig isolated atria and uterus (-log KB = 7.7 and 7.4, respectively), in comparison to M1 receptors in canine isolated saphenous vein (-log KB = 6.9) or M3 receptors in a range of guinea-pig isolated smooth muscles including ileum, trachea, fundus, seminal vesicle or oesophagus (-log KB = 6.6-6.8). In rat aorta, the -l

A new kind of bisbenzylisoquinoline compounds, daurisoline alkaloid derivatives, has been found to be very potent calmodulin antagonists. The fluorescence spectra of interaction between these derivatives and calmodulin have been studied. The experimental results showed that these derivatives could interact with calmodulin resulting in forming a complex and diminishing fluorescence intensity. The process was Ca2(+)-dependent. These derivatives can bind to calmodulin and result in conformational change of calmodulin. But the binding site of these derivatives on calmodulin may be different from t

Nine adult horses were fed alfalfa hay cubes containing approximately 10% Senecio vulgaris until all horses had consumed approximately the same amount of toxic components of S vulgaris, pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA). The amount of PA consumed was determined by the amount that induced clinical signs of PA toxicosis in 3 horses. The 6 other horses were given similar amounts per kilogram of body weight. An initial decrease of feed intake was observed when horses' diets were changed from alfalfa cubes to alfalfa/Senecio cubes, and feed intake was decreased further over 89 to 98 days. From 50 to 159…

This paper describes experiments designed to evaluate whether the narcotic antagonist naloxone significantly interferes with seizures induced by tetrahydroisoquinolines (TIQs). In these experiments we found that naloxone significantly reduced seizure scores induced by intra-cranially infusing mice with 50 micrograms of the dopamine-derived tetrahydroisoquinoline (TIQ) alkaloid, 6,7-dihydroxy TIQ. These findings support an opioid involvement in the actions of TIQs and may lead to further understanding of opioid-mediated novel excitatory receptors.

Two groups of patients (nine patients each) were treated for acute alcaloid-withdrawal-syndromes. One group was given peroral neuroleptic medication, the other was treated by neuroleptic cocktail administered via vena subclavia catheter. By statistic comparison of the two methods the superiority of the latter could be shown in that duration of withdrawal, the syndrome itself and hallucinatory transitional psychoses could be drastically reduced. A suitable prescription and dosages of the neuroleptic cocktail are presented. The results are compared to the ones in current literature.

62 pyrrolizidine alkaloids and derivatives have been screened for acute and chronic hepato- and pneumotoxicity by the single dose method previously described. This procedure is satisfactory for the compounds of medium to high hepatotoxicity but failed to detect toxicity in certain other compounds of known, low hepatotoxicity. New findings significant in relation to hepatotoxicity are as follows: (i) On a molar basis, diesters of heliotridine and retronecine are about 4 times as toxic as the respective mono-esters and heliotridine esters are 2-4 times as toxic as retronecine esters. (ii) Crotan…

Berberine is a bioactive compound found in the rhizomes, stems, and fruits of plants belonging to the Berberidaceae, Ranunculaceae, Menispermaceae, Papaveraceae, and Rutaceae families. Although berberine is widely distributed throughout all parts of plants, the bark and root contain significantly higher concentrations of berberine compared with other plant parts. Berberine possesses various pharmacological properties, including antitumor, antibiotic, analgesic, antihyperlipidemic, and anti-inflammatory effects. The bioactive components of berberine are considered promising for the prevention a

The global rise in dermatophytosis prevalence, recurrence, and resistance underscores the urgent need for novel antifungal agents and alternative treatment strategies. This study provides the first report of the antidermatophytic activity of hyemaline, a natural alkaloid isolated from Zanthoxylum fagara, against clinically relevant dermatophytes, including Microsporum canis [minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC): 16-128 µg/mL], Trichophyton mentagrophytes (MIC: 2-128 µg/mL), and Trichophyton rubrum (MIC: 16-64 µg/mL). Mechanistic insights from molecular docking suggest hyemaline acts by inhib

Brachycybe is a genus of the millipede subterclass Colobognatha, a group that exhibits rare social characteristics, including species aggregations and male brood care. Although it has been hypothesized that alkaloid-based defensive secretions may also function as pheromones, no studies have examined these traits. Here, we evaluated the chemical secretions of six species, two of which had not been previously studied, and conducted Y-tube pheromone assays. Chemical investigations elucidated the structures of three new metabolites: hydrogosodesmine acid (6), homo-hydrogosodesmine acid (7), and bu
