Community-based prevention of Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases through topical application of acaricide to white-tailed deer: background and rationale.

This series of articles describes the first large-scale experiment designed to explore the efficacy of reducing the risk of tick-borne disease in highly endemic communities of the northeastern and Mid-Atlantic United States through deployment of a self-application device that treats white-tailed deer with acaricide to prevent feeding by adult Ixodes scapularis ticks and all stages of Amblyomma americanum ticks where both species occur. The results of the multicenter study are reported in the accompanying articles in this issue. This article describes the background and rationale for this exper…

Cross-sectional survey of ixodid tick species on grazing cattle in Japan.

Ixodid tick species were collected from cattle in 60 grazing fields throughout Japan. Haemaphysalis longicornis was mainly recovered in the western and southern regions, while Ixodes species were collected mainly in the central to northern regions. Other tick species such as Amblyomma testudinarium, Boophilus microplus, H. flava and H. kitaokai were identified from a few fields in the central and southern regions. Haemaphysalis longicornis were recovered in the fields with higher temperatures and annual rainfall, whereas I. ovatus and I. persulcatus were collected in fields with lower temperat…

Rickettsiae-infected ticks in an endemic area of spotted fever in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil.

A study on tick-borne rickettsiosis was developed in the county of Santa Cruz do Escalvado, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, where a clinical case of the disease, confirmed by necropsy, had been reported. Of the 1,254 ticks collected, 1,061 belonged to the Amblyomma genus, 57 to the Rhipicephalus sanguineus species, 81 to Boophilus microplus, and 46 to Anocentor nitens. The hemolymph test associated with Giménez staining showed that 18 of the 221 A. cajennense specimens, 1 of the 16 R. sanguineus, 1 of the 22 B. microplus, 3 of the A. nitens, and 1 of the A. ovale contained rickettsia-like micro…

Delayed urticaria or anaphylaxis after consumption of red meat with evidence of alpha-gal sensitisation.

Food allergies to red meat, specifically to galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal), a mammalian oligosaccharide, are considered to be very rare, especially in Asia and Latin America. Most of the cases reported are characterised by symptoms of delayed urticaria or anaphylaxis after the consumption of red meat. Sensitisation to red meat has been linked to the use of cetuximab or tick bites, especially from the Amblyomma americanum and Ixodes spp species. Here, we documented a case study from a Colombian male patient with symptoms of delayed urticaria and anaphylaxis with a history of tick bit…

Detection of Borrelia DNA in Tick Species Collected from Vegetation and Wild Animals in Fukuoka, Japan.

We screened for the presence of Borrelia spp. in ticks collected from vegetation by flagging and from wild animals between May 2017 and November 2018 in Fukuoka, located in the northern Kyushu region of Japan. A total of 1,601 ticks were collected and separated based on morphology into nine species, namely Ixodes turdus, I. ovatus, Amblyomma testudinarium, Haemaphysalis flava, H. formosensis, H. kitaokai, H. longicornis, H. hystricis, and H. megaspinosa. The ticks were segregated into 561 pools and nested PCR was used to detect borrelial DNA. Borrelia turdi and Borrelia sp. HM were identified …

Bacteriocidal qualities of ixodid tick (Acarina: Ixodidae) salivary cement plugs and their changes under the influence of a viral tick-borne pathogen.

The abundance of bacteriocidal compounds contained in the salivary cement plug of ixodid ticks was changed because of the reproduction of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) in their bodies. The size of TBEV-infected Ixodes persulcatus Shulze lytic zone surrounding the cement plug enlarged to that of naive ticks, whereas Micrococcus lysodeikticus (Cohn) lytic zones induced by the cement plugs of TBEV-infected Amblyomma hebraeum Koch nymphs or Rhipicephalus appendiculatus Neumann females were reduced, compared with those produced by noninfected specimens. It is possible that an increase of lys…
