Refinement of the Child Amblyopia Treatment Questionnaire (CAT-QoL) using Rasch analysis.

Aims or Purpose: The Child Amblyopia Treatment Questionnaire (CAT-QoL) was developed using a "bottom-up" methodological approach. Interviews with children with amblyopia identified items (questions) and response levels to be tested in a draft questionnaire consisting of 11 items (sad, feeling on face, hurt, doing schoolwork, cross, how other children treat you, doing things, worried, upset with family, playing with friends, happy). This study describes the refinement of the descriptive system for the CAT-QoL instrument using the application of Rasch analysis. Methods: A multi-centre pilot stud

Visual Search in Amblyopia: Abnormal Fixational Eye Movements and Suboptimal Sampling Strategies.

PURPOSE: Microsaccades shift the image on the fovea and counteract visual fading. They are also thought to serve as an optimal sampling strategy while viewing complex visual scenes. The goal of our study was to assess visual search in amblyopic children. METHODS: Twenty-one amblyopic children with varying severity of amblyopia and 10 healthy controls were recruited. Eye movements were recorded using infrared video-oculography during amblyopic and fellow eye viewing while the subjects performed (1) visual fixation, (2) exploration of a blank scene, and (3) visual search task (spot the differen

Protection against deprivation amblyopia depends on relative not absolute daily binocular exposure.

Short daily periods of binocular exposure (BE) can offset longer single daily episodes of monocular exposure (ME) to prevent the development of deprivation amblyopia. To determine whether the outcome depended upon an absolute daily amount of BE or its proportion of the daily visual exposure, daily mixed visual input of 3 different durations (3.5, 7, or 12 h) was imposed on 3 cohorts of kittens. Measurements of the visual acuity of the deprived eye at the end of mixed daily visual input revealed that the acuity of the deprived eye developed to normal values so long as the proportion of the tota

Alexia and quadrant-amblyopia: reading disability after a minor visual field deficit.

Reading difficulties caused by hemianopia are well described. We present a study of alexia in a patient (NT) with a milder visual field deficit. The patient had suffered a cerebral haemorrhage causing damage to the left occipital cortex and underlying white matter. NT's text reading was slow and prone to error, but recognition of single letters was preserved. Single word reading was accurate, but slower than normal. On perimetric testing NT initially showed an upper right quadrantanopia, but by attending covertly to this quadrant he could achieve luminance detection except in a small scotoma a

A clinically convenient test to measure binocular balance across spatial frequency in amblyopia.

Amblyopia is a visual disorder that originates from the brain. It exhibits no pathology in the eye. Studies have shown that measuring both visual acuity and binocular balance for assessing amblyopia could be more helpful. However, tests that measure binocular balance are time-consuming, often exceeding 30 min. Their long test durations prevent them from being used in the clinic. For this reason, we have developed a quick (i.e., about 7 min) and precise tool that quantitatively measures binocular balance of patients with amblyopia. The new test can capture binocular imbalance that is typically

Fixational Eye Movement Waveforms in Amblyopia: Characteristics of Fast and Slow Eye Movements.

Fixational eye movements comprise of fast microsaccades alternating with slow intersaccadic drifts. These physiologic eye movements play an important role in visual perception. Amblyopic patients are known to have fixation instability, particularly of the amblyopic eye. We examined eye movement abnormalities that contribute to this instability. We found that fixation stability is affected by the presence of fusion maldevelopment nystagmus (FMN). However, some amblyopes can have nystagmus without nasally directed slow phases and reversal in direction of the quick phase on ocular occlusion, feat
