Aim: This study proposes the impregnation of Foley catheters with chlorpromazine (CPZ) to control biofilm formation by Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Materials & methods: The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for CPZ and the effect of CPZ on biofilm formation were assessed. Afterward, biofilm formation and the effect of ciprofloxacin and meropenem (at MIC) on mature biofilms grown on CPZ-impregnated catheters were evaluated. Results: CPZ MIC range was 39.06-625 mg/l. CPZ significantly reduced (p < 0.05) biofilm formation in vitro and on impregnated cathet

To optimize the management of male urinary tract infections, it is essential to analyze the various pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic parameters in the different organs of the male urinary tract. In the literature, the quantity and quality of data vary considerably depending on the class of antibiotics and the methodological approaches used. Beta-lactams achieve effective concentrations in prostate tissue, the testes, and urine, but reach only limited levels in prostatic secretions. Fosfomycin reaches therapeutic concentrations in prostate tissue, prostatic secretions, seminal fluid, bladder

The elderly segment of the population is growing at a rapid rate; this "longevity revolution" is associated with an increasing prevalence of bacteriuria and UTI. Asymptomatic bacteriuria generally requires no treatment. In the absence of obstructive uropathy or infected calculi, asymptomatic bacteriuria in the elderly pursues a benign course. Prevention of UTIs is needed to avoid the risks of symptomatic infection, bacteremia, and urosepsis. Indwelling catheters should be left in situ for short periods of time, and alternative methods of bladder drainage should be used whenever possible. Coexi

Suspected urinary tract infection (UTI) in people living with dementia is a common diagnostic problem: delirium or functional decline often replaces focal urinary symptoms, while asymptomatic bacteriuria and pyuria are common at baseline, making urine positivity easy to misattribute as causal. The result is a predictable dual harm pattern across emergency and long-term care settings, with avoidable antibiotics in low-certainty episodes and dangerous delay when invasive infection is evolving. This instructional review presents a verification-first, certainty-gated approach organized by clinical

BACKGROUND: These recommendations address the empiric choice of antibiotics in suspected complicated urinary tract infection (cUTI). Issues to balance include the need for appropriate initial empiric antimicrobial therapy, the patient's severity of illness, and antimicrobial stewardship concerns.
METHODS: The panel's recommendations are based upon evidence derived from systematic literature reviews that focused on comparative benefits and harms of classes of antibiotics approved for cUTI, starting with publications from 2008 onwards, and our review of predictors of resistance in uropathogens

INTRODUCTION: Ureteral stents are commonly used in urology but are frequently associated with hematuria, abdominal discomfort, urinary tract infection, stent displacement, and stent encrustation. Surface modification of ureteral stents is beneficial to solve the problem, and these can be divided into coated stents and drug-eluting stents according to the modification method. Coated stents can be divided into hydrophilic coatings, antibacterial coatings, and anti-encrustation coatings. Drug-eluting stents can be divided into antimicrobial drug-eluting, antispasmodic analgesic drug-eluting, anti

INTRODUCTION: Antimicrobial-resistant bacterial infections are an increasing public health threat and people with spinal cord injury (SCI) are disproportionally at higher risk. National guidelines concerning urine testing after SCI are conflicting. Unnecessary urine testing in the SCI population (with high asymptomatic bacteriuria prevalence) leads to unnecessary antimicrobial use, propagating resistant infections, especially urinary tract infections (UTIs).
OBJECTIVES: (a) Describe UTI antimicrobial adherence in patients with SCI. (b) Explore SCI patient knowledge and attitudes toward curren

INTRODUCTION: Acute pyelonephritis is among the most common bacterial infections. Options for initial treatment of pyelonephritis include an extended-spectrum cephalosporin or a fluoroquinolone. This study aimed to compare the clinical outcomes of patients receiving ceftriaxone to those who received levofloxacin for the treatment of acute pyelonephritis.
METHODS: In this randomized, open-label trial, hospitalized adults with acute pyelonephritis were treated with ceftriaxone (1g IV every 12 hours) or levofloxacin (750 mg IV daily) for at least 7 days. Clinical and microbiological characterist

INTRODUCTION: Screening for and treating asymptomatic bacteriuria (ABU) or administering antibiotic prophylaxis is recommended during ureteral stent and nephrostomy interventions. This study investigates the frequency of postinterventional infectious complications to gain insight into the need for antibiotics.
METHODS: Between September 2016 and June 2019, 168 insertions/exchanges of ureteral stents or nephrostomies were recorded in a prospective multicenter study. Patients without a symptomatic UTI did not receive antibiotic treatment/prophylaxis. Asymptomatic patients in whom their urologis

INTRODUCTION: Uncomplicated urinary tract infections(UC-UTI) represent a frequent reason for consultation. Most cases are empirically treated, but the antimicrobial susceptibility of the causative microorganisms has changed over the past years. The objectives of this study where to determine UC-UTI causative microorganism and their antimicrobial susceptibility profiles in adult women.
METHODS: A prospective analytic study was conducted in two hospital in Córdoba, Argentina, between November/2016 and October/2017. From the identification of positive urine cultures, urinary tract infections (UT

Lower urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common types of infections in women. The existing high risk of recurrent forms, including relapses and reinfection, suggests the paramount importance of the pharmacotherapy strategy chosen by the doctor for the primary episode of lower urinary tract infection, especially acute cystitis, determining the degree of rehabilitation. Current data on the resistance of the main pathogens of UTI to many broad-spectrum antibacterial drugs, on the one hand, and the risk of subsequent resistance formation with the use of reserve antibiotics, such a

Lower urinary tract infections (LUTI) currently retain the status of one of the most urgent problems of urology. According to extensive microbiological studies of UTIAP I and II, "DARMIS" the most common pathogens that are detected in the urine of women with LUTI are gram-negative bacteria of the Enterobacteriales family, in particular E. Coli. Antibacterial therapy demonstrates high effectiveness in the treatment of uncomplicated LUTI. However, the problem of recurrent infection remains unresolved. Taking into account known side effects of continuous antimicrobial prevention, as well as data

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most common bacterial infection in pregnancy, increasing the risk of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Urinary tract infections may present as asymptomatic bacteriuria, acute cystitis or pyelonephritis. Escherichia coli is the most common pathogen associated with both symptomatic and asymptomatic bacteriuria. If asymptomatic bacteriuria is untreated, up to 30% of mothers develop acute pyelonephritis, with an increased risk of multiple maternal and neonatal complications, such as preeclampsia, preterm birth, intrauterine growth restriction an

Urinary tract infections caused by uropathogenic Escherichia coli presents a serious communal and nosocomial health problem initiated by bacterial adhesion to the bladder cells. E. coli expresses fimbriae with a mannose-binding adhesin, FimH, at the tip. Heptyl alpha-D-mannoside (HM) is a nanomolar inhibitor of this lectin, preventing adhesion of type 1-piliated E. coli and reducing bacteria levels in a murine cystitis model. Herein, we described the synthesis of multimeric heptyl-mannosides with valencies ranging from one to four by copper-catalyzed azide alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC). Biologi

At times, a patient's capacity to store urine fails. When dealing with this circumstance, and bearing in mind Primary Health Care Center nurses' responsibilities, the elaboration of a protocol becomes justified, especially in light of the fact that virtually no Spanish bibliography on this topic exists. The aforementioned protocol will be revised in August 2013. This project won the Third Betadine Nursing Prize in 2008.
