The past two decades have witnessed significant growth in our understanding of the developmental antecedents of anxiety disorders. In this article, we review studies of offspring at risk for anxiety disorders, longitudinal studies of the course of anxiety disorders in clinical, epidemiologic, and at-risk samples, studies of hypothesized temperamental risk factors for anxiety, and give a brief overview of the literature on environmental risk factors. Clear developmental antecedents to anxiety disorders identified include (1) childhood anxiety disorders [in particular, separation anxiety and ove

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are a high risk factor for depression and anxiety in adulthood and are associated with the alterations in the hypothalamic‒pituitary‒adrenal (HPA) axis and monoamine neurotransmitters. This study aimed to elucidate the behavioral, neuroendocrine, and neural circuit mechanisms underlying the impact of ACEs effect on adult second-hit stress. We employed a "two-hit" mouse model that combines maternal separation (MS) with restraint stress (RS). To investigate the potential pathological effects of ACEs on depressive- and anxiety-like behaviors in second-hit mode

BACKGROUND: Pediatric dentists employ both pharmacological and non-pharmacological behavior control methods. Despite the use of behavioral control techniques, some young children cannot undergo treatment in the office, making sedation or general anesthesia necessary. Premedication drugs can be used before general anesthesia to reduce anxiety, control pain, induce amnesia, prevent nausea, and avert potential complications. The search for the ideal premedication for children is ongoing.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to compare the effects of pregabalin and midazolam (MID) in children undergoing d

OBJECTIVE: Sleep problems are a clinical and/or diagnostic feature for a broad array of mood, substance use, and anxiety disorders, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Previous research by Leskin et al (Leskin GA, Woodward SH, Young HE, Sheikh J. Effects of comorbid diagnoses on sleep disturbance in PTSD. J Psychiat Res 2002;36:449-452) using the baseline National Comorbidity Survey (NCS) data found that persons with PTSD and panic disorder had a greater proportion of sleep problems than persons with other comorbid disorders. The current study extends Leskin et al's findings using

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Unlike midazolam, melatonin premedication is not associated with cognitive impairment in adults despite its anxiolytic properties. The use of melatonin as a premedicant in children has not been reported. This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study compared the perioperative effects of different doses of melatonin and midazolam in children.
METHODS: Seven groups of children (n = 15 in each) were randomly assigned to receive one of the following premedicants. Midazolam 0.1, 0.25 or 0.5 mg kg(-1) orally, melatonin 0.1, 0.25 or 0.5 mg kg(-1) orally each mixed

Anxiety disorders are among the most common disorders in early childhood. Although many older children and adolescents with anxiety disorders recover and remain well, little is known about the continuity of early childhood anxiety and the factors that predict persistence/recurrence in later childhood and adolescence. We followed 129 children who met anxiety disorder criteria at age 3 and/or 6 and determined how many continued to experience an anxiety disorder between age 7 and 15, as well as the continuity of specific anxiety disorders. We explored whether biological sex, number of anxiety dis

Adverse events early in life, including maternal separation and social isolation, profoundly affect brain development and adult behaviour and may contribute to the occurrence of psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and mood disorders in genetically predisposed individuals. The molecular mechanisms underlying these environmentally induced developmental adaptations are unclear and best evaluated in animal paradigms with translational salience. In this study, we examined the effects in mice of maternal separation and/or social isolation for 6 h/d between postnatal days 15 and 21 on perform

Existing studies show a reliable association between literacy and mental health problems, such as anxiety and depressive symptoms. Much of this research has been conducted with primary school-age children, with less research focusing on adolescents and older adults. The current study included a sample of children (N = 478; Mage = 10.1, SDage = 1.9), adolescents (N = 438; Mage = 15.6, SDage = 1.7), and older adults (N = 111; Mage = 68.5, SDage = 6.0) who completed measures of self-reported literacy difficulties, anxiety (reading anxiety, social anxiety, generalised anxiety, panic, separation an

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Anxiety disorders are common in children and adolescents, with prevalence rates varying from 6 to 20%. These disorders can result in significant academic, social, and familial impairment. Early identification in pediatric primary care and effective management may help improve outcomes.
RECENT FINDINGS: Self-report measures of pediatric anxiety can supplement the clinical interview and assist in screening children and adolescents for separation anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and social phobia. Substantial evidence supports the use of cognitive behavioral the

This study examined the psychometric properties of the parent version of the Spence Children's Anxiety Scale (SCAS-P); 484 parents of anxiety disordered children and 261 parents in a normal control group participated in the study. Results of confirmatory factor analysis provided support for six intercorrelated factors, that corresponded with the child self-report as well as with the classification of anxiety disorders by DSM-IV (namely separation anxiety, generalized anxiety, social phobia, panic/agoraphobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and fear of physical injuries). This study investigated the inter-rater agreement, test-retest reliability, and convergence validity of the Japanese-translated Anxiety Disorders Interview Schedule (ADIS) for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV). The ADIS was administered to 71 children and adolescents (53.52% females, Mage = 10.70 years, SD = 2.05) and their parents, with a two-month test-retest interval. Participants also completed questionnaires on anxiety and depression. Test-retest reliability was good for the presence or absence of a diagnosis and clinical significance ratings

This preliminary randomized controlled trial (RCT) examines the feasibility of dismantling cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for childhood anxiety disorders. Fourteen children (10 girls) ages 7 to 14 (m = 10.2) with social phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, separation anxiety disorder, or panic disorder were randomized to receive 6 sessions of either a) the pre-exposure anxiety management strategies presented in traditional CBT, or b) parent-coached exposure therapy. The sample was selected from a treatment seeking population and is representative of children in clinical settings. Examinat

Anxiety-related problems are among the most frequently reported mental health difficulties in autism spectrum disorder. As most research has focused on clinical samples or high-functioning children with autism spectrum disorder, less is known about the factors associated with anxiety in community samples across the ability range. This cross-sectional study examined the association of gender, age, adaptive functioning and autism symptom severity with different caregiver-reported anxiety symptoms. Participants were caregivers of 241 children (6-18 years old) with autism spectrum disorder attendi

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the relationship of specific anxiety and affective disorders to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in a blind, controlled family study.
METHOD: Eighty case and 73 control probands, as well as 343 case and 300 control first-degree relatives of these probands, participated in the study. Subjects were examined by psychologists or psychiatrists using the Schedule for Affective Disorder and Schizophrenia-Lifetime Anxiety version (SADS-LA). Two experienced psychiatrists independently reviewed all clinical materials, and final diagnoses were made according to DSM-

Previous studies have shown that peer victimization has a negative effect on sleep quality. However, there is limited understanding of how peer victimization affects sleep quality. According to the theoretical model of the stress-sleep relationship, stressors, such as peer victimization, affect individuals' sleep quality by affecting their cognitive processes and emotional responses. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the cognitive (rumination) and emotional (anxiety) mechanisms of the relationship between peer victimization (traditional and cyber victimization) and sleep quality. The Preschool Anxiety Scale (PAS) is a parent-report scale measuring young children's anxiety symptoms involving five specific anxiety symptoms (separation anxiety, physical injury fears, social phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, generalized anxiety) that load on a higher-order factor representing general anxiety shared by all specific anxiety symptom subtypes. Although the PAS has been widely used to assess anxiety symptoms in young children, few studies have tested its measurement invariance for group comparisons. Using data from a sample of 2,221 children and their parents/carers in the
