Development of acuity in a primate model of human infantile unilateral aphakia.

We are studying infant rhesus monkeys that have been reared under various conditions of deprivation to model infantile unilateral aphakia. Grating acuity was assessed in these monkeys from birth to approximately 1 year of age using the quick acuity card procedure. We found that an uncorrected aphakic eye develops little or no pattern vision. Undercorrection or near point optical correction of an aphakic eye with an extended-wear contact lens coupled with continuous occlusion of the opposite eye sometimes results in normal development of acuity in the aphakic eye but does so only at the cost of…

Cyclic esotropia in a patient with unilateral traumatic aphakia: case report.

Cyclic esotropia is a rare and poorly understood condition normally treated by correcting the deviation measured on the squinting day. Control in some patients with this condition can be gained by correcting their refractive errors, thereby improving acuity. We report on an adult patient who developed cyclic esotropia after unilateral traumatic aphakia with failed contact lens wear whose squint was corrected by secondary intraocular lens implantation. This may be explained by the reduction in the degree of aneisokonia which subsequently improved steropsis.

The influence of aphakia and vitrectomy on experimental retinal toxicity of aminoglycoside antibiotics.

To study the effect of lens and vitreous surgery on the dose threshold of aminoglycoside-induced retinal toxicity, we performed extracapsular lens extraction (Group 1) or lensectomy and vitrectomy (Group 2) on Dutch Belted rabbits. A single dose of amikacin or gentamicin ranging from 100 to 4,000 micrograms was administered intravitreally. Retinal toxicity was examined by light and transmission electron microscopy seven days after injection. Both groups showed retinal toxicity after 400 micrograms of gentamicin or 1,500 micrograms of amikacin, doses identical to those causing toxicity in intac

A histopathologic study of bilateral aphakia with a unilateral intraocular lens in a child.

A 7-year-old boy who had had electrically induced cataracts since he was 6 months old underwent a lens extraction by phacoemulsification in his right eye. He later refused to wear a contact lens. When the boy was 10 year old, the lens of his left eye was removed by phacoemulsification and an intraocular lens was implanted. The intraocular lens functioned well and was tolerated by the boy until he died in an automobile accident at the age of 16 years. A histopathologic study of the eyes, which were obtained post mortem, showed a decreased corneal endothelial cell population, mild focal atrophy

Corneal response to extended wear of CAB contact lenses in aphakia.

We studied 41 aphakic eyes in 30 patients who had been wearing CAB (cellulose acetate butyrate) contact lenses on an extended basis. Patients were 51 to 81 years old and averaged 14.3 months of wearing time. Visual acuity was very good. Pachometry measurements ranged from 0.42 mm to 0.66 mm and averaged 0.550 mm. This compares favorably with data in the literature on corneal thickness seen with routine use of PMMA or hydrogel lenses or with extended wear of hydrogel lenses. Corneal thickness was also compared with unoperated fellow eyes and eyes using CAB lenses on a daily basis only.

[The judgement of the degree of disability in cases of aphakia and pseudoaphakia (author's transl)].

Since more than 40 years the judgement of the degree of disability in cases of unilateral aphakia is discussed. This means the effort toward an advisory objectivity on the one hand and human understanding for the patient's damage on the other hand. It is supposed to repeal the 4th emergency ordinance of 1932 and to pay pensions below 20% of the degree of disability, too. As long as new legislatory measurements do not exist, the maintenance of a pragmatic authoritative activity is plead for, which assigns for a pension-duty compensation in cases of unilateral aphakia and/or pseudoaphakia indepe…
