An unusual insertion of accessory biceps brachii muscle.

In the course of a routine dissection of the anterior region of the arm an accessory muscle was observed in the flexor aspect of the right arm of a 64-year-old male cadaver. This accessory muscle, which was considered to be the third head of the biceps brachii muscle originated from the inserting tendon of the deltoid muscle. The muscle gave rise to three tendons as it approached the cubital fossa. Two of these tendons inserted to the bicipital aponeurosis whereas the third tendon inserted to the ulnar head of the pronator teres muscle. Dissection of the forearm on both sides revealed that the…

Imaging of intra- and extraabdominal desmoid tumors.

Desmoid tumors are characterized by proliferation of fibroblastic cells that arise from the fascia or aponeurosis of muscle. They are most commonly found in the abdomen of adults, arising from the anterior abdominal wall, mesentery, or retroperitoneum. At sonography, desmoids have variable echogenicity, with smooth, well-defined margins. On contrast-enhanced computed tomographic scans, the tumors are generally high attenuation (relative to muscle) and have either ill- or well-defined margins. At magnetic resonance imaging, desmoids have low signal intensity relative to muscle on T1-weighted im…

[Surgical treatment of congenital clubfoot in children].

The paper is based on the author's personal experience in the surgical treatment of 438 patients with congenital club foot aged from 9 month … turbances in the development of the bones of the medial part of the foot. Dissection of the plantar aponeurosis was not performed in any patient. Dislocation of the tendon attachment area on the foot may be advised for the children threatened by a recurrence of club foot of the anterior part of the foot and in passive complete correction of the foot.

Soft tissue conditions in athletes' feet.

Soft tissue conditions of the foot vary considerably. They include problems of the skin and subcutaneous tissues, tendons and the plantar aponeurosis, ligaments and joints, and supporting structures, including vessels and nerves. Some conditions occur from everyday use, others are caused by continuous and repetitious motions from a particular activity or sport. Overuse syndromes occur from the fatigue of soft tissues through continued use beyond the body's ability to heal microscopic daily wear and tear. Acute trauma occurs when the powerful forces generated by the running or jumping athlete f…

Intrinsic foot muscles contribute to elastic energy storage and return in the human foot.

The human foot is uniquely stiff to enable forward propulsion, yet also possesses sufficient elasticity to act as an energy store, recycling mechanical energy during locomotion. Historically, this dichotomous function has been attributed to the passive contribution of the plantar aponeurosis. However, recent evidence highlights the potential for muscles to modulate the energetic function of the foot actively. Here, we test the hypothesis that the central nervous system can actively control the foot's energetic function, via activation of the muscles within the foot's longitudinal arch. We used…

Effect of toe dorsiflexion on the regional distribution of plantar fascia shear wave velocity.

BACKGROUND: The plantar fascia is exposed to repetitive tensile stress induced by cyclic loads associated with daily activities, such as walking and running. Due to overuse or abnormal foot alignment, insertional and distal (i.e., mid-substance) regions within the plantar fascia may exhibit microtears, which leads to plantar fasciopathy. Ultrasound shear wave elastography is an imaging technique to measure shear wave velocity propagating through biological tissues, considered herein as an index of tensile stress. This study aimed to quantify the effect of toe dorsiflexion on the regional distr

Deep-plane paradoxical masseteric bulging after dual-plane botulinum neurotoxin injection: a case report.

Paradoxical masseteric bulging (PMB) is a distressing complication typically attributed to compensatory contraction of untreated superficial … ing, while the inner sub-layer exhibited marked compensatory thickening beneath a distinct internal aponeurosis. Targeted deep-plane reinjection under ultrasound guidance resulted in complete resolution. This case highlights the compartmentalized anatomy of the masseter muscle and emphasizes the importance of anatomical and sonographic evaluation in refractor …

Congenital Upper Eyelid Entropion in an Extremely Low Birth Weight Neonate: Early Surgical Correction to Prevent Corneal Injury.

Congenital upper eyelid entropion is rare but can rapidly cause severe corneal morbidity in neonates if left untreated. In extremely low-birth-weight infants with multisystem anomalies, surgical intervention carries substantial risks, creating a balance between life-preserving caution and vision-preserving urgency. We report a case of early surgical correction in a late preterm neonate weighing 900g who presented with bilateral congenital upper eyelid entropion and right corneal ulceration. Surgical correction involved transposing the pretarsal orbicularis and levator aponeurosis complex, fixi…

Inguinal dermoid cyst in Hesselbach's triangle with diagnostic and surgical decision-making challenges: a case report.

Inguinal dermoid cysts are exceedingly rare, with most reported cases arising from the spermatic cord in male patients or the round ligament in female patients. We report a rare case of a inguinal dermoid cyst in a young woman presenting as an irreducible inguinal mass with gradually increasing local discomfort. Preoperative imaging suggested a benign but nonspecific cystic lesion, extending from the preperitoneal plane to the layer beneath the external oblique aponeurosis. The lesion was excised using a combined laparoscopic and open approach. Intraoperative cyst rupture released sebaceous ma…

Arcuate line hernia repair: a laparoscopic technique with transfascial primary repair and mesh reinforcement.

Arcuate line hernias (ALHs) are rare intraparietal hernias, with a prevalence ranging from 1.62% to 2%. These hernias occur at the arcuate line (AL)-a significant anatomical transition zone where the posterior lamella of the internal oblique and transversus abdominis aponeurosis shift from contributing fibres to the posterior sheath to the anterior sheath. Uniquely, ALHs do not present with a palpable defect. Although typically asymptomatic, incarceration and strangulation have been reported. Presently, there is no consensus regarding the optimal repair technique for ALHs, which pose a specifi…

Airway obstruction resulting from massive subgaleal hematoma caused by superficial temporal artery injuries in an adult patient with liver cirrhosis.

Subgaleal hematoma, characterised by blood accumulation between the galea aponeurosis and the periosteum, is rarely reported in adults. A man with liver cirrhosis experienced airway obstruction secondary to an extensive subgaleal hematoma due to superficial temporal artery injuries. Within 6 hours after injury, swelling of the patient's head and neck was noted, which was associating with inspiratory wheezing and paradoxical breathing, thus necessitating emergency intubation. The branches of the superficial temporal artery were identified as the bleeding source via angiography. Subsequently, en…
