We describe a Bedouin boy with multiple congenital anomalies/mental retardation (MCA/MR). He has frontal bossing, ridged metopic suture, bilateral ptosis, right squint, depressed nasal bridge, small nose, anteverted nostrils, lobulated tongue, polydactyly of both hands, microphallus, hypoplastic scrotum, microtestes, dysgenesis of corpus callosum, and a Dandy-Walker variant. This phenotype overlaps both the Varadi-Papp syndrome (OFD VI) and Opitz trigonocephaly (C syndrome). This phenotypic overlap is discussed in light of the concept of splitting and lumping in genetic diseases.

There are three oncology centers in the United Arab Emirates, but only one with a dedicated pediatric unit (Tawam Hospital). The unit is 12 years old and is staffed by two pediatric oncologists working with pediatric but not oncology nurses. It handles approximately two thirds of the pediatric cancer cases in the country. UNLABELLED: Over a period of 3 years, 192 children with familial Mediterranean fever were prospectively studied. Of these, 106 (55%) were girls and 86 (45%) were boys. The prevalence was 1:2600 children with a gene frequency of 1:50. The age at onset ranged between 4 months and 16 years. The aim of this study was to establish the profile of major congenital malformations in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) population which has a high rate of consanguinity. All births with birth weight above 500 g in the three hospitals in the Al Ain Medical District of UAE were prospectively studied from January 1992 to January 1994. Fourteen subcutaneous nodules from five patients with severe localized onchocerciasis, from one person with a mild dermatitis and from two men with the generalized form of the disease were studied. The endemicity of cutaneous leishmaniasis in northwest Libya was confirmed. Although the strains isolated from man had variable biological properties they were all biochemically similar according to the tests used. The Libyan strains resemble those of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in parts of the Middle East, but can be differentiated from urban or highland strains. It is suggested that the recent discovery of the disease is due partly to the improvement in medical services, and partly to the development of new areas of land for agriculture and housing.

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer (PCa) is the most common malignancy among men in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and is often diagnosed at advanced stages with aggressive features. Germline mutations in DNA-repair genes, especially BRCA1 and BRCA2, increase PCa risk, with BRCA2 conferring up to 8.6-fold and BRCA1 a 3.7-fold risk.
