Self-immolation is a neglected public health and social problem in South Asia. This review focuses on epidemiological patterns, sociodemographic characteristics, motives, and psychosocial correlates associated with self-immolation in South Asian countries. A narrative review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, BanglaJOL, and Google. A search for original peer-reviewed studies, published in English between 1990 and 2024, on self-immolation in eight South Asian countries, yielded a total of 11 studies. Six studies were from India; no study from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, and N…

The recently (2024) launched American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) e-learning module UroSTeP: Urology course is getting a modern upgrade with artificial intelligence (AI)-based clinical cases developed to refine and cement knowledge acquisition. AI-based learning is not only accepted but is also required nowadays, and the conservatism of medicine is traditionally not conducive to early adoption. Here, we try to explain why and how it can be done.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) remains a major public health concern with a geographically skewed distribution. The disease is endemic in East Asia (particularly China), Southeast Asia (SEA) and South-Central Asia. Although China contributes the largest share of global NPC cases, several SEA countries consistently report high incidence rates. Despite this substantial burden, NPC remains a neglected disease across much of the region. This review synthesizes and appraises the available evidence on the epidemiology, incidence trends and disease burden of NPC in SEA. High-incidence hotspots persis…

BACKGROUND: Since 1970, advances in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) management have significantly extended the patients' life expectancy. However, DMD remains universally fatal.
OBJECTIVE: To understand the current DMD management standards and practices in Asia and to evaluate inconsistencies, unmet needs, and future directions for DMD patient management in the region.
METHODS: Clinical experts from Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan convened in September 2023 to discuss DMD diagnosis, assessment, treatment, and management best practices. A pre-meeting survey was also administered to explore…

Rodent-borne zoonotic diseases, including hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, leptospirosis, and rickettsiosis, significantly impact public health. However, there is a limited understanding of these diseases in Southeast Asia, a region emerging as a hotspot for zoonotic diseases. To address this, the authors reviewed the recent developments in prevalent rodent-borne diseases in Southeast Asia from 2000 to 2024. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google, and Google Scholar, using keywords like "rodent-borne diseases," "prevalence," "e…

Melioidosis is caused by the environmental pathogen Burkholderia pseudomallei. Among 1,331 patients with melioidosis during 1989-2023 in the Darwin Prospective Melioidosis Study in Australia, we identified 6 locally acquired cases caused by B. pseudomallei sequence type 46. Because of global transmission and expansion of endemicity, clinicians should increase awareness of melioidosis.

South Asia is rapidly urbanising. The strains of rapid urbanisation have profound implications for the health and equity of urban populations. This Series paper examines primary health care (PHC) in south Asian cities. Health and its social determinants vary considerably across south Asian cities and substantial socioeconomic inequities are present. Although cities offer easy geographical access to PHC services, financial hardship associated with health care use and low quality of care are a concern, particularly for low-income residents. Providing better PHC in south Asia requires a multi-sec…

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS TOPIC?: Infertility represents a significant global public health concern, impacting approximately 15% of couples of reproductive age worldwide. Despite this, data on infertility prevalence in the demographically diverse Asia-Pacific region remains sparse.
WHAT IS ADDED BY THIS REPORT?: This study examines the trends and distribution of infertility in the Asia-Pacific region from 1990 to 2021, revealing a significant increase in female infertility. The growth rate of secondary infertility has exceeded that of primary infertility. Additionally, an increase in t…

In this article, we describe our first experiences implanting the AVEIR VR leadless pacemaker (Abbott) in Kazakhstani patients, a significant step in the development of this technology in Central Asia. This case series includes five male patients, with a range of symptoms (presyncope, dizziness and dyspnoea on exertion), ranging in age from 14 to 77 years; some individuals also had comorbidities, including atrioventricular block and AF. Indications for pacing were identified in each patient. The parameters of postimplantation stimulation and the results of initial observations were recorded. T…

Transcatheter tricuspid interventions are becoming increasingly more common in Asia Pacific. In the past decade, clinicians in Asia Pacific have worked with a multitude of new transcatheter tricuspid technologies. A standardized clinical algorithm to diagnose symptomatic tricuspid regurgitation to increase patient access to novel right heart therapies has not yet been identified. Anatomic diversity in the Asia Pacific patient population; disease prevalence patterns; and socioeconomic, cultural, and local health structures represent unique challenges in the treatment of these patients with righ…

As in many other parts of the world, the urban areas of the South Asian region are increasingly expanding. While cities today are the heart of commercial, technological and social development, they are also vulnerable to a variety of natural and anthropogenic threats. The complex urban infrastructure, and the ever-expanding population in cities, exacerbate the impacts of climate change and increase the risk of natural hazards. Throughout history, various hydrological disasters including floods, tidal surges, and droughts, and non-hydrological disasters such as earthquakes, landslides, and stor…

BACKGROUND: Anesthesia leads to impairments in central and peripheral thermoregulatory responses. Inadvertent perioperative hypothermia is hence a common perioperative complication, and is associated with coagulopathy, increased surgical site infection, delayed drug metabolism, prolonged recovery, and shivering. However, surveys across the world have shown poor compliance to perioperative temperature management guidelines. Therefore, we evaluated the prevalent practices and attitudes to perioperative temperature management in the Asia-Pacific region, and determined the individual and instituti…

Rabies is a vaccine-preventable viral disease present in more than 150 countries around the world. Globally, almost 60,000 people die each year from rabies, of which more than 58% are in Asia and around 45% in South Asia with especially high incidence in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Vaccination coverage of both people and stray dogs is low in the region and in general people are not given enough protection and information about pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis. Engagement of multiple sectors and One Health collaboration including community education, awareness programmes and vaccination c…

We present genome-wide data from 40 individuals dating to c.16,900 to 550 years ago in northeast Asia. We describe hitherto unknown gene flow and admixture events in the region, revealing a complex population history. While populations east of Lake Baikal remained relatively stable from the Mesolithic to the Bronze Age, those from Yakutia and west of Lake Baikal witnessed major population transformations, from the Late Upper Paleolithic to the Neolithic, and during the Bronze Age, respectively. We further locate the Asian ancestors of Paleo-Inuits, using direct genetic evidence. Last, we repor…

Alkhurma hemorrhagic fever, caused by Alkhurma hemorrhagic fever virus (ALKV), is an arboviral infection which is further expanding in tropical and subtropical regions of the Western Asia. A number of Alkhurma hemorrhagic fever virus (ALKV) strains have been isolated from clinical cases representing Saudi Arabia and Egypt; however, the phylogenetic relationship of these particular isolates to those reported previously elsewhere in the world remains elusive. Based on the analysis of the envelope (E), and non-structural gene (NS3 and NS5), the phylogenetic and PASC analysis revealed the circulat…

Melioidosis is a protean disease which is endemic to Southeast Asia and northern Australia. Here, we report a case of infected aortic aneurysm due to Burkholderia pseudomallei in an immunocompetent man 6 months after a trip to northern Malaysia. This patient initially received inappropriate surgical and antibiotic treatment, leading to a peri-prosthetic aortic infection with lumbar spondylitis and contiguous psoas muscle abscess. This case highlights the difficulty of diagnosing melioidosis given its diverse clinical manifestations and the limits of routine microbiological methods to identify …

Although the field of transcatheter therapies for valvular heart disease (VHD) is continuously expanding in western countries, uptake of this treatment in Asia has been slow, mainly due to the high cost of devices, need for specific training programs, and lack of specialized heart teams and dedicated structures. Moreover, anatomic considerations of the Asian population, such as smaller aorta and peripheral vessel size, high prevalence of bicuspid aortic valves, high calcium burden of stenotic aortic valve leaflets, low coronary ostia, and high prevalence of rheumatic etiology, might raise conc…
