The International Space Station (ISS) is a complex built environment physically isolated from Earth. Assessing the interplay between the microbial community of the ISS and its crew is important for preventing biomedical and structural complications for long term human spaceflight missions. In this study, we describe one crewmember's microbial profile from body swabs of mouth, nose, ear, skin and saliva that were collected at eight different time points pre-, during and post-flight. Additionally, environmental surface samples from eight different habitable locations in the ISS were collected fr

Maintaining intact cognitive performance is a high priority for space exploration. This review seeks to summarize the cumulative results of existing studies of cognitive performance in spaceflight and analogue environments. We focused on long-duration (>21 d) studies for which no review has previously been conducted. There were 11 published studies identified for long-duration spaceflight (N = 42 subjects) as well as 21 shorter spaceflight studies (N = 70 subjects). Overall, spaceflight cognitive studies ranged from 6-438 d in duration. Some 55 spaceflight analogue studies were also identified

The present review aimed to suggest approaches to prospective medical problems related to the health maintenance of space crews during future manned interplanetary, particularly Martian, missions up to 2-3 years with a possible stay on a planet with gravity different from that on Earth. The approaches are based on knowledge so far obtained from our analysis of the medical support of long-term orbital flights up to one year, as well as on the consideration of specific conditions of interplanetary missions. These specific conditions include not only long-term exposure to microgravity, but also a

Astronauts are classified as radiation workers due to the presence of ionizing radiation in space. For the assessment of health risks, physical dosimetry has been indispensable. However, the change of the location of dosimeters on the crew members, the variation in dose rate with location inside the spacecraft and the unknown biological effects of microgravity can introduce significant uncertainties in estimating exposure. To circumvent such uncertainty, a study on the cytogenetic effects of space radiation in human lymphocytes was proposed and conducted for Mir-18, a 115-day mission. This stu…

INTRODUCTION: Symptoms related to elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations on the International Space Station are widely stated and researched. While microgravity contributes to the observed CO2 related symptoms, an additional factor that may contribute to symptoms associated with hypercapnia is the impact of environmental CO2 on sleep. Studies evaluating how the sleep environment impacts sleep quality in terrestrial environments have shown that slightly elevated CO2 concentrations can negatively impact deep sleep quantity.
METHODS: CO2 concentrations in the crewmembers' sleep quarters an

Space radiation is a notable hazard for long-duration human spaceflight1. Associated risks include cancer, cataracts, degenerative diseases2 and tissue reactions from large, acute exposures3. Space radiation originates from diverse sources, including galactic cosmic rays4, trapped-particle (Van Allen) belts5 and solar-particle events6. Previous radiation data are from the International Space Station and the Space Shuttle in low-Earth orbit protected by heavy shielding and Earth's magnetic field7,8 and lightly shielded interplanetary robotic probes such as Mars Science Laboratory and Lunar Reco

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: During prolonged spaceflight, astronauts often experience ocular changes, due to constant head-ward fluid shifts in space as compared with Earth. This article reviews symptoms, likely causes, and potential solutions, such as lower body negative pressure, to counteract space-associated neuroocular syndrome (SANS).
RECENT FINDINGS: Low gravity conditions and other aspects of spaceflight affect the eye detrimentally, causing SANS which is characterized by optic disc edema, choroidal thickening, cotton wool spots, and a hyperopic shift. SANS is probably caused by altered hemody…

Physiological reactions of four cosmonauts to +Gx during the descent after short-term (less than 30 d) space flights were correlated with the hemodynamic shifts developed previously during the LBNP test and occlusive plethysmography in microgravity. The cosmonauts who had exhibited a sharp decrease in cerebral circulation during the in-flight LBNP tests showed signs of deteriorated cerebral blood flow (vertigo, weakness, hyperhydration) at the attempt to assume the vertical posture and to climb out of the landing module. Also, the cosmonauts found to have the arterial and venous tone significa

The purpose of this study was to quantify the effects of repetitive Coriolis and cross-coupled stimulations, similar to the vestibular training the cosmonauts are exposed to prior to their spaceflight. on vestibular function in control subjects on Earth. Ten volunteers were passively rotated in yaw on a rotating chair while executing standardized pitch head-and-trunk movements. The chair stopped to change direction after 12 head-and-trunk movements were made. The runs were grouped in sessions of ten, which were repeated daily for 10 days. The severity of motion sickness was assessed by subjecti

With the advent of long-duration space explorations, ionizing radiation (IR) may pose a constant threat to astronauts without the protection of Earth's magnetic field, or hypomagnetic field (HMF). However, the potential biological effects of a HMF on the cellular response to IR have not been well characterized so far. In this study, immortalized human bronchial epithelial cells were exposed to X-rays under either a geomagnetic field (GMF, ~50 uT) or HMF (<50 nT) culture condition. A significant increase of the cell survival rate in HMF after radiation was observed by colony formation analysis.…

Gravitational forces can impose physical stresses on the human body as it functions to maintain homeostasis. It has been reported that astronauts exposed to microgravity experience altered biological functions and many subsequent studies on the effects of microgravity have therefore been conducted. However, the anticancer mechanisms of simulated microgravity remain unclear. We previously showed that the proliferation of human Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) cells was inhibited when these cells were cultured in time-averaged simulated microgravity (taSMG). In the present study, we investigated whether …

Physiological changes in humans during spaceflight upon return to earth have been attributed to systemic adaptation, response to stress, and … basic biological mechanisms caused by microgravity. Aging humans share many of the symptoms seen in astronauts during spaceflight. These include reduced cardiac function, loss of bone and reduced immune response and orthostatic hypotension. It is possible that some of physiological adaptations seen in aging may share common physiological basis with those cha …

Ocular health is currently a major concern for astronauts on current and future long-duration spaceflight missions. Spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) is a collection of ophthalmic and neurologic findings that is one potential physiologic barrier to interplanetary spaceflight. Since its initial report in 2011, our understanding of SANS has advanced considerably, with a primary focus on posterior ocular imaging including fundus photography and optical coherence tomography. However, there may be changes to the anterior segment that have not been identified. Additional concerns t…

Spaceflight-induced changes in astronaut telomeres have garnered significant attention in recent years. While plants represent an essential component of future long-duration space travel, the impacts of spaceflight on plant telomeres and telomerase have not been examined. Here we report on the telomere dynamics of Arabidopsis thaliana grown aboard the International Space Station. We observe no changes in telomere length in space-flown Arabidopsis seedlings, despite a dramatic increase in telomerase activity (up to 150-fold in roots), as well as elevated genome oxidation. Ground-based follow up

During the planned missions to Mars, astronauts will be faced with many potential health hazards including prolonged exposure to space radiation. Ground-based studies have shown that exposure to space radiation impairs the performance of male rats in cognitive flexibility tasks which involve processes that are essential to rapidly and efficiently adapting to different situations. However, there is presently a paucity of information on the effects of space radiation on cognitive flexibility in female rodents. This study has determined the impact that exposure to a low (10 cGy) dose of ions from…

Spaceflight stressors may increase Parkinson's disease (PD) risk, but microgravity's specific contribution to human dopaminergic (DA) vulnerability remains undefined. Here, we exposed human iPSC-derived midbrain DA organoids and differentiated SH-SY5Y neurons to simulated microgravity for 72 hours. This exposure reduced neurite outgrowth, eroded DA identity, and activated familial-PD mitochondrial kinases without depleting extracellular dopamine. We observed severe mitochondrial dysfunction-including membrane potential loss and respiratory suppression-coupled with global translational repressi

Hypogravity environments (e.g., 1/6 g on the Moon and 3/8 g on Mars, where gravity is lower than on Earth) profoundly alter the sensorimotor mechanisms underlying spatial orientation, perception, and manual task execution. Understanding these adaptations is essential for ensuring astronaut operational performance. In particular, there is a need for a better understanding of the long-term effects of hypogravity on manual task performance during seated operations, such as piloting, landing, and navigating, which rely on the integration of vestibular, visual, and somatosensory signals that drive
