Cardiovascular determinants of exercise capacity in the Paralympic athlete with spinal cord injury.

This report briefly summarizes the cardiovascular factors that influence exercise physiology and, eventually, sports performance of athletes with a spinal cord injury (SCI). The consequences of an SCI are numerous and concern voluntary muscle function, deep and superficial sensitivity, and autonomic function to a degree determined by the level and completeness of the spinal lesion. Athletes with SCI perform with their upper body, which limits their maximal exercise capacity and puts them at a disadvantage compared with leg exercise in terms of mechanical efficiency and physiological adaptation

Ultrasound diagnosis for preventing knee injuries in cuban high-performance athletes.

Introduction Diagnostic evaluation of the musculoskeletal system has traditionally been based on medical history, physical examination, and x-rays (techniques that provide limited information), and more recently on computerized axial tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (both very expensive). Ultrasound, a non-invasive and less expensive method, has become an indispensable tool for diagnosing overuse sports injuries. The Imaging Department at the Cuban Sports Medicine Institute (abbreviated in Spanish as IMD) developed a preventive ultrasound diagnostic imaging method and has applied it f

Articular talar injuries in athletes: results of microfracture and autogenous bone graft.

BACKGROUND: The treatment options of talar osteochondral lesions are numerous. Although studies show these treatments have been used with varying success, the ability to return to activity (RTA), including sports after treatment of talar dome injuries, have not been well documented. HYPOTHESIS: A treatment plan that uses microfracture for Hepple stage 2 through 4 lesions and autogenous bone grafting for Hepple stage 5 lesions for athletes with articular lesions of the talus will produce a high rate of return to athletic activity. STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4. METHODS: Pre

Evaluation and treatment of medial ulnar collateral ligament injuries in the throwing athlete.

Medial ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries are common and are seen most frequently in baseball pitchers. Appropriate recognition, treatment, and rehabilitation are necessary to ensure the best chance for return to preinjury levels of participation. Participation in competitive sports may be disrupted for 6 months to 1 year when treated optimally. Abstinence from play may be prolonged when treatment is delayed or if conservative treatment fails; this delay carries significant consequences to the professional, collegiate, and high school athlete. The orthopedic literature is replete with re

Lumbar spine region pathology and hamstring and calf injuries in athletes: is there a connection?

This paper discusses the theory that subtle lumbosacral canal impingement of the L5 nerve root may be a relatively common occurrence in older footballers and may in fact be a common underlying basis for the age related predisposition towards hamstring and calf strains.

The role of arthroscopy in the evaluation and treatment of triangular fibrocartilage complex injuries in athletes.

Treating athletes with TFCC injuries can be a difficult but very rewarding undertaking. Each athlete has individual priorities and concerns, ranging from general health and fitness for the recreational athlete to earning or potentially earning a living as a professional athlete. It is crucial for the treating surgeon to understand these issues to offer the appropriate treatment options at the appropriate time. Triangular fibrocartilage complex injuries are quite common in athletes because of the high loads placed on the ulnar side of the wrist, especially with ulnar-neutral and positive varian

Lifetime musculoskeletal symptoms and injuries among former elite male athletes.

We studied the lifetime occurrence of musculoskeletal symptoms in former elite male athletes: 29 weight-lifters, 31 soccer players, 28 long-distance runners, and 29 shooters, 45-68 years of age. The proportion of subjects with monthly back pain during the past year was smaller among runners than among the other athletes, although not statistically significant. Monthly back pain was more common in weight-lifters with lifetime training hours above the median as compared with those below the median. The average intensity of the worst back pain during the past year was clearly higher in weight-lif

Stronger Athlete Identity Is a Risk Factor for More Severe Depressive Symptoms After Musculoskeletal Injury in Pediatric Athletes: a Systematic Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Treatment for musculoskeletal sports injuries often neglects the psychological components of health and recovery. Pediatric patients require particular consideration of their psychosocial and cognitive development. This systematic review investigates the effects of musculoskeletal injury on mental health in pediatric athletes. RECENT FINDINGS: Athlete identity may increase in adolescence and is associated with worse mental health post-injury. Psychological models suggest loss of identity, uncertainty, and fear mediate the association between injury and symptoms of anxiety,

The role of diffusion tensor imaging in characterizing injury patterns on athletes with concussion and subconcussive injury: a systematic review.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major public health problem. The majority of TBIs are in the form of mild TBI (also known as concussion) with sports-related concussion (SRC) receiving public attention in recent years. Here we have performed a systematic review of the literature on the use of Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) on sports-related concussion and subconcussive injuries. Our review found different patterns of change in DTI parameters between concussed and subconcussed groups. The Fractional Anisotropy (FA) was either unchanged or increased for the concussion group, while the subconcuss

Characterization of quadriceps muscle injuries in National Basketball Association athletes and effects on player performance following injury.

BACKGROUND: In basketball, quadriceps strains and contusions are common due to the muscle’s role in knee extension and hip flexion, with the rectus femoris most prone to injury because it crosses both joints, making it vulnerable to eccentric loading. The purpose of this study was to describe the epidemiology of quadriceps injuries in National Basketball Association (NBA) players, assess changes in player performance statistics after injury, and to determine factors that were associated with a greater or equal player efficiency rating (PER) and usage percentage (USG%) 1 year and 2 years after

[Injuries specific to ice skating--documentation of the injuries of competitive athletes during a pre-season training camp].

A Prospective Study. Competitive figure skaters absolve a comprehensive training schedule. The musculoskeletal system of pair and single skaters have to tolerate enormous impacts, especially throughout landings after repetitive jumps. Intense training leads therefore to specific sports injuries and chromic overuse injuries of the ice skaters. Twenty-five skaters were studied. We concentrated on the different types and localisations of injuries and on the individual loss of training sessions resulting from these injuries. The results are based on questionnaires and a clinical examination of the
