OBJECTIVE: Bradycardia during rapid sequence intubation (RSI) is an uncommon but serious adverse effect encountered in pediatric intubations. Atropine has historically been used in the pediatric population as RSI premedication to prevent bradycardia, especially when using succinylcholine as an induction agent. The objective of this analysis was to identify the incidence of bradycardia with or without atropine use.
METHODS: This single-center, retrospective, observational case series reviewed pediatric patients up to 18 years old requiring intubation from January 1, 2015, to December 31, 2018.…

INTRODUCTION: Atropine, a muscarinic antagonist, is known since the 19th century to inhibit myopia development in children. One of its effects is that it stimulates choroidal thickening. Thicker choroids, in turn, have been linked to myopia inhibition. We used the atropine-stimulated choroidal response in the chicken to learn more about the time courses and amplitudes of the effects of atropine, as well as whether repeated applications lead to accumulation or desensitization.
METHODS: Intravitreal injections containing 250 µg atropine sulfate were performed in 1 eye around 10:00 in the mornin…

BACKGROUND: Atropine is the most powerful treatment for progressive myopia in childhood. This study explores the 3-year effectiveness of atropine in a clinical setting.
METHODS: In this prospective clinical effectiveness study, children with progressive myopia ≥ 1D/year or myopia ≤ -2.5D were prescribed atropine 0.5%. Examination, including cycloplegic refraction and axial length (AL), was performed at baseline, and follow-up. Outcome measures were spherical equivalent (SER) and AL; annual progression of SER on treatment was compared with that prior to treatment. Adjustments to the dose were …

INTRODUCTION: Cycloplegia allows for an objective refraction in children. Atropine is the gold standard but causes prolonged blurred vision. Cyclopentolate is less effective but less disabling. Tropicamide is a weak cycloplegic. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a cyclopentolate and tropicamide combination (CTA) versus atropine for refraction in black children.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a prospective study between October 2011 and July 2012 on all children seen in consultation. Objective refraction was performed after cycloplegia with cyclopentolate 0.5% combined with tropic…

We describe a rapid resolution liquid chromatography (RRLC) method for analyzing atropine sulfate, its degradation products (tropic acid, apoatropine, atropic acid) and other components (e.g. phenol, methylparaben) in injectable medicines that are used by the German armed forces in emergency situations. Chromatography is performed using an acetonitrile/phosphate buffer gradient (pH = 1.0) and an RP 18 column (50 x 4.6 mm, 1.8 µm) with the detection wavelength set at 220 nm. The concentration of the active ingredient (atropine sulfate) in the tested products ranges from about 1 mg•ml(-1) to 10 …

Nerve agent poisoning is known to induce full-blown seizures, seizure-related brain damage (SRBD), and lethality. Effective and quick management of these seizures is critical. In conditions of delayed treatment, presently available measures are inadequate calling for optimization of therapeutic approaches. The effects of ketamine/atropine sulfate (KET/AS) combinations were thus assessed as potential valuable delayed therapy in soman-poisoned male guinea pigs. Animals received pyridostigmine (26 microg/kg, i.m.) 30 min before soman (62 microg/kg, i.m.) followed by therapy consisting of atropine…

The present study examined the sleep-wake cycle effects of microinjections of yohimbine, an adrenergic antagonist, and atropine, a cholinergic antagonist, into the cerebral ventricle of clomipramine-induced depressed rats. Yohimbine microinjection caused a significant reduction in the total duration and the number of REM sleep episodes compared to control saline injections. Atropine microinjection caused a significant reduction in the total duration and the number of REM sleep episodes without changing the REM sleep latency compared to control saline microinjection. These results show for the …

We investigated the relationship between histamine and muscarinic cholinergic neurons in central nervous system (CNS)-mediated glucose regulation in anesthetized fed rats. The injection of pyrilamine (5 x 10(-7) mol) into the third cerebral ventricle suppressed the hyperglycemia induced by intraventricular injection of histamine (5 x 10(-7) mol). Ranitidine (5 x 10(-7) mol), however, did not suppress this hyperglycemia. The injection of atropine (5 x 10(-9)-5 x 10(-7) mol) into the third cerebral ventricle suppressed the histamine-induced hyperglycemia in a dose-dependent manner. These finding…
