Evaluation of the Autonomic Nervous System in a Canine Model of Chronic Embolic Pulmonary Hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Sildenafil improves autonomic dysfunction caused by pulmonary hypertension (PH) in humans, but its effect is unknown in dogs with PH. This prospective study aimed to evaluate the autonomic nervous system function of a canine model of chronic embolic PH (CEPH) and the autonomic nervous system function of a canine model of CEPH in which sildenafil was administered. METHODS: This study used five clinically healthy female beagle dogs. Evaluation parameters included hemodynamic parameters, heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV). Each evaluation parameter was compared before a…

The impact of paclitaxel and carboplatin chemotherapy on the autonomous nervous system of patients with ovarian cancer.

BACKGROUND: Paclitaxel-based regimens are frequently associated with the development of peripheral neuropathy. The autonomous nervous system (ANS) effects, however, of this chemotherapeutic agent remain unexplored. METHODS: We investigated a group of 31 female patients with ovarian cancer receiving treatment with paclitaxel and carboplatin, as well as a group of 16 healthy age- and gender-matched healthy volunteers. All study participants completed a questionnaire and were assessed neurophysiologically at three time points (baseline, 3-4 months and 6-8 months following the onset of chemothera

Revealing the role of the autonomic nervous system in the development and maintenance of Goldblatt hypertension in rats.

Despite extensive use of the renovascular/Goldblatt model of hypertension-2K-1C, and the use of renal denervation to treat drug resistant hypertensive patients, autonomic mechanisms that underpin the maintenance of this hypertension are important yet remain unclear. Our aim was to analyse cardiovascular autonomic function by power spectral density analysis of both arterial pressure and pulse interval measured continuously by radio telemetry for 6weeks after renal artery clipping. Mean arterial pressure increased from 106±5 to 185±2mmHg during 5weeks post clipping when it stabilized. A tachycar

[Participation of peripheral sensory structures of autonomic nervous system in the mechanisms of neuroimmune interactions].

On the basis of the electrophysiological research carried out with immunohystochemical methods on rats, it is found, that introduction of products of mast cell degranulation into blood as well as endogenous release of mast cell mediators with either the compound 48/80 or introduction of egg albumin to presensitized rats, enhances activity of mesenteric afferent nerve fibers. The obtained data provide evidence that intestinal afferents contribute an early signal to the brain regarding potential pathogens. The question of whether or not the intrinsic enteric neurons are involved in these process

The actions of hyperthermia on the autonomic nervous system: central and peripheral mechanisms and clinical implications.

Hyperthermia is defined as an elevated body temperature due to failed thermoregulation. It can occur under physiological conditions such as … not been fully researched, but even less is known on the effects of hyperthermia on the peripheral autonomic nervous system. In this review we discuss how conditions such as malignant or therapeutic hyperthermia affect the central and peripheral components of the autonomic nervous system, smooth muscle, skeletal muscle and cardiac muscle. We conclude that there is suffic …

Role of the autonomic nervous system in cardioprotection by remote preconditioning in isoflurane-anaesthetized dogs.

AIMS: Remote ischaemic preconditioning (rIPC) protects cardiac and non-cardiac tissues against ischaemic injury. Although there is increased demand to investigate its potential clinical applicability, fundamental mechanisms responsible for rIPC-mediated protection remain unresolved. We examined in isoflurane-anaesthetized dogs whether an intact cardiac nervous system was necessary to mediate rIPC protection against ischaemic injury. METHODS AND RESULTS: Dogs were randomly allocated to six groups: 1, control (CON, no-rIPC); 2, rIPC (4 × 5 min renal artery occlusion/reperfusion); 3, autonomic g

Assessment of autonomic nervous system in patients with epilepsy in the interictal state. A pilot study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system often accompanies partial and generalized epileptic seizures. In some epileptic patients dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system is also present in the interictal state. Cardiovascular autonomic disturbances are possibly associated with the pathogenesis of sudden unexpected death in people with epilepsy. The aim of the study was to evaluate the autonomic nervous system in patients with epilepsy in the interictal state and to assess the clinical usefulness of applied methods. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was done in 21 …

Role of autonomic nervous system for development and suppression of motion sickness in Suncus murinus.

To clarify the role of autonomic nervous function in motion sickness, the effect of agents that act on the autonomic nervous system on the motion stimuli-induced emesis was studied in two strains of Suncus murinus (Jic:SUN-Her and Jic:SUN-Ler) with congenitally different sensitivity to veratrine sulfate. We demonstrated significant differences between the two strains in sensitivity to motion stimuli. Isoproterenol (2.5 mg kg(-1), s.c.) significantly prolonged the latency to the first emetic episode induced by motion stimuli and significantly decreased the number of emetic episodes in Jic:SUN-H…

Regulation of cytokine and chemokine production by transmitters and co-transmitters of the autonomic nervous system.

The sympathetic nervous system innervates immune organs and, when activated, releases its signaling molecules in the vicinity of immune cells. The released molecules include the "classical" transmitters norepinephrine and epinephrine and the co-transmitters ATP and adenosine. Immune cells express various adrenergic and purinergic receptors that are sensitive to these molecules, and the production of immune/inflammatory mediators (cytokines, chemokines, and free radicals) is modulated by activation of these receptors. Notably, the production of tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-6, -10, a

[Function of the autonomic nervous system in children and adolescents with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus].

19 IDDM patients (m/f 9/10; ages 7-25 y.; duration of diabetes 3-20 y., mean 10 y.) have been compared to 15 healthy controls (m/f 11/4; ages 11-24 y., mean 14 y.) in respect to HRTS (heart rate response to standing), SDB (single deep breath) and Valsalva maneuvre. In the diabetics the results have been correlated to MNCV (motor nerve conduction velocities), quality of diabetic control and duration of diabetes. A questionnaire did not uncover signs or symptoms of autonomic dysfunction. Resting heart rates were significantly higher in diabetics but were unrelated to age, duration of diabetes, q

Autonomic nervous system influences on beat-to-beat blood pressure variability in healthy young adults.

Based on evidence from 24-h and visit-to-visit blood pressure (BP) monitoring, recent laboratory-based studies have begun investigating beat-to-beat average real variability (ARV) in BP as a prognostic indicator of cardiovascular risk. However, beat-to-beat BP ARV may be influenced by adaptive parasympathetic modulation of heart period, particularly in young, otherwise healthy adults. This profound modulation of heart rate between consecutive cardiac cycles might paradoxically increase ARV, yet the autonomic underpinnings of BP ARV remain uncharacterized. Herein, we characterize the associatio

Peripheral and autonomic nervous system involvement in spinocerebellar ataxia type 3: unveiling an invisible burden.

BACKGROUND: Neuropathological examinations in spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) have demonstrated peripheral and autonomic nervous system degeneration, but the impact of associated symptoms on genetically affected individuals at different disease stages remains understudied. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical burden of peripheral and autonomic nervous system involvement in SCA3 mutation carriers across the disease spectrum. METHODS: Forty SCA3 mutation carriers, including ten pre-ataxic individuals, completed questionnaires about muscle cramps, neuropathic pain, autonomic symptoms, ac…

Parkinson's disease and metabolic disorders, understanding their shared co-morbidity through the autonomic nervous system.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor and nonmotor dysfunctions. Its pathological hallmark is the aggregation of ɑ-synuclein in the central nervous system (CNS), leading to widespread loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra (SN). Interestingly, metabolic disorders localized in the periphery, such as diabetes mellitus, frequently co-occur with PD. Emerging evidence highlights a bidirectional relationship: metabolic diseases may accelerate PD progression, while PD can exacerbate metabolic dysfunction. Beyond these associations, a
