BACKGROUND: No previous review has comprehensively assessed long-term changes in anxiety and depressive symptoms in bariatric surgery patients. This systematic review assessed the effects of bariatric surgery on long-term reductions (≥ 24 months) in anxiety and depressive symptom severity in morbidly obese (≥ 35 BMI kg/m2) participants. Short term effects (< 24 months) are briefly reviewed for context.
METHODS: PsychINFO, Google Scholar and PubMed databases were systematically searched for prospective cohort studies published from inception to 14 June 2018 that evaluated long-term (≥ 24 month

Helicobacter pylori (Hp) is one of the most important human pathogens that can cause duodenal and gastric ulcers, gastritis and stomach cancer. Hp infection is considered to be a cause of limiting access to bariatric surgery. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of Hp in patients with obesity going into bariatric surgery and to reveal the relationship between Hp and clinical data. The study group was formed of 68 preoperative bariatric surgery patients (body mass index (BMI) 44.7 ± 4.8). Gastric biopsies (antrum and corpus) were used for histological and molecular (caqA and gl

OBJECTIVE: Obesity is associated with a high incidence of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). Bariatric surgery is postulated to lead to OSA resolution, but there is inconclusive evidence on its efficacy. We used objective measurements to determine the rate of resolution or improvement of OSA in patients who had bariatric procedures in our unit.
RESULTS: Data was analysed on all patients with OSA who underwent bariatric procedures [laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) and sleeve gastrectomy (LSG)] between June 2012 and September 2016 in our unit. 47 patients (26.7%) were diagnosed with O

Bariatric/metabolic surgery is the most effective method to treat morbid obesity and its complications. Tracing its origin back to jejunoileal bypass in 1950s, bariatric/metabolic surgery has been continuously improved after more than 60 years of development. At present, the mainstream surgical procedures include sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, biliopancreatic diversion/duodenal switch, and mini gastric bypass. In addition, new procedures such as single-anastomosis duodenal switch, duodenal-jejunal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy, laparoscopic greater curvature plication and endos

INTRODUCTION:: Bariatric surgery has become the gold standard treatment for morbid obesity, but there is no consensus regarding its safety and efficacy among individuals with chronic liver diseases.
OBJECTIVE:: To critically evaluate the existing evidence on literature about bariatric surgery in individuals with liver cirrhosis.
METHOD:: Narrative review performed by means of an online search in the MEDLINE and LILACS databases.
RESULTS:: Bariatric surgery is safe and effective in individuals with chronic liver disease without clinical decompensation or significant portal hypertension. Indi

BACKGROUND: Even if the jejunoileal bypass has been definitely abandoned due to the high rate of hepatic complications, cases of liver injury after the new bariatric procedures are still reported. We aimed to review the available literature concerning liver damage associated with the older and newer types of bariatric surgeries.
METHODS: An extensive literature search of MEDLINE was performed using different combinations of the following terms: "bariatric surgery OR biliopancreatic diversion OR jejunoileal bypass OR roux-en-y gastric bypass OR vertical banded gastroplasty OR laparoscopic adju

Difficulties of follow-up of patients after bariatric surgery. Since several years, there are existing guidelines for the follow- up of patients undergoing bariatric surgery. Despite this, many patients who have undergone bariatric surgery do not have the recommended follow-up. Patients are often lost to follow-up and are therefore more likely to have a weight regain after surgery. On the other hand, they may be exposed to a lower tight control of their comorbidities, an increase in the number of postoperative complications, and a high level of nutritional deficiencies. In addition, many situa

BACKGROUND: Hypocalcemia is a common complication after total thyroidectomy. Previous bariatric surgery could be a higher factor risk for hypocalcemia due to alterations in calcium absorption and vitamin D deficiency.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate incidence and factors involved in the risk of hypocalcemia (transient and permanent) and the postoperative outcomes of these patients after total thyroidectomy.
SETTING: University hospital in Paris, France.
METHODS: All patients who had previously undergone obesity surgery (i.e., Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, or adjustable gastric band)

Bariatric surgery in patients with type 2 diabetes has been shown to improve glycemic control and reduce need for glucose-lowering medications. Some of these improvements occur in the early postoperative period prior to any weight loss. These early reductions in circulating glucose can be attributed to primarily perioperative caloric restriction and prolonged fasting. Inpatient glycemic targets for patients undergoing bariatric surgery are similar to those recommended for other surgical procedures as a way of minimizing risk for complications. There is evidence that achieving perioperative and

Severe nutrition complications after bariatric surgery remain poorly described. The aim of this case series was to identify specific factors associated with nutrition complications after bariatric surgery and to characterize their nutrition disorders. We retrospectively reviewed all people referred to the clinical nutrition intensive care unit of our university hospital after bariatric surgery from January 2013 to June 2015. Twelve persons who required artificial nutrition supplies (ie, enteral nutrition or parenteral nutrition) were identified. Seven persons underwent a "one-anastomosis gastr

BACKGROUND: Staple line and anastomotic leakages are life-threatening complications after bariatric surgery. Upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract X-ray examination with oral administration of a water-soluble contrast agent can be used to detect leaks. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of routine upper GI tract fluoroscopy after primary bariatric surgery.
METHODS: Between January 2009 and December 2014 a total of 658 bariatric interventions were carried out of which 442 were primary bariatric operations. Included in this single center study were 307 sleeve gastrectomies and 135 Rou

Bariatric surgery is most commonly carried out in women of childbearing age. Whilst fertility rates are improved, pregnancy following bariatric surgery poses several challenges. Whilst rates of many adverse maternal and foetal outcomes in obese women are reduced after bariatric surgery, pregnancy is best avoided for 12-24 months to reduce the potential risk of intrauterine growth retardation. Dumping syndromes are common after bariatric surgery and can present diagnostic and therapeutic challenges in pregnancy. Early dumping occurs due to osmotic fluid shifts resulting from rapid gastrointesti

PROBLEM: Patients with Roux en Y gastric bypass (RYGBP) who undergo total thyroidectomy may be at increased risk for recalcitrant symptomatic hypocalcemia.
METHODS: All patients who underwent total thyroidectomy with a history of preceding RYGBP from 2007 to 2012 were identified retrospectively. Cases were matched 2:1 for age, gender, and BMI to a control group undergoing total thyroidectomy without previous RYGBP during the same study period.
RESULTS: Age and body mass index were equivalent between cases (n = 14) and controls (n = 23). A comparison between groups demonstrated that cases had

Bariatric surgery is often pursued to improve quality of life (QOL). This paper systematically reviews the literature examining QOL following bariatric surgery. Fifteen controlled trials examined changes in QOL in obese (BMI > 30) adults (18–65 years) following bariatric surgery; seven compared bariatric surgery to non-surgical interventions and six compared different types of bariatric surgery. Bariatric surgery resulted in greater improvements in QOL than other obesity treatments. Significant differences in QOL improvements were found between different types of bariatric surgery. QOL improve

BACKGROUND: Complications of bariatric surgeries are common, can occur throughout the patient's lifetime, and can be life-threatening. We examined bariatric surgical complications presenting to our acute care surgery service.
METHODS: Records were reviewed from January 2007 to June 2013 for patients presenting with a complication after bariatric surgery.
RESULTS: Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass was the most common index operation (n = 20), followed by open Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (n = 6), laparoscopic gastric band (n = 4), and vertical banded gastroplasty (n = 3). Diagnoses included i

AIMS: To investigate the effect of bariatric surgery on female pelvic floor disorders.
METHODS: Eighty consecutive obese women who underwent a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy were prospectively enrolled. Four validated questionnaires (ICIQ-UI, BFLUTS-SF, PFDI-20, PISQ-12) were used to evaluate pelvic floor symptoms before and 6 months after surgery. Outcome results were analyzed according to the presence of preoperative urinary incontinence (UI), defined as a positive answer to the question "how often do you leak urine?" on the ICIQ-UI questionnaire.
RESULTS: Seventy-seven women (age 41.3 ±
