The corticothalamic system in sleep.

The transition from wakefulness to NREM sleep is associated with typical signs of brain electrical activity, characterized by prolonged periods of hyperpolarization and increased membrane conductance in thalamocortical (TC) neurons, with the consequence that incoming messages are inhibited and the cerebral cortex is deprived of signals from the outside world. There are three major oscillations during NREM sleep. Spindles are generated within the thalamus, due to thalamic reticular (RE) neurons that impose rhythmic inhibitory sequences onto TC neurons, but the widespread synchronization of this

Arrhythmogenic activity of cardiac muscle in pulmonary veins of the dog: implication for the genesis of atrial fibrillation.

OBJECTIVE: Pulmonary veins are important foci of ectopic beats to initiate paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. The purpose of this study were to investigate the electrophysiological characteristics of excitable cells in canine pulmonary veins obtained from healthy and chronic rapid atrial pacing dogs and their responses to cardioactive agents. METHODS: Transmembrane action potentials (APs) were recorded from multiple sites of pulmonary veins isolated from 17 healthy dogs and 14 dogs with chronic (6-8 weeks) rapid atrial pacing (780 bpm). RESULTS: In normal superfusate, several types of electrica

Does improvement in attention through theta/beta neurofeedback training result in better entry-level vocational task performance in individuals with schizophrenia? An open-label randomised controlled trial.

The presence of cognitive deficits in schizophrenia is unequivocally established. These deficits impact the socio-occupational functioning of the individual. Consequently, enhancing cognitive functions is a key goal of comprehensive treatment approaches. Of late, neurofeedback has shown promise in improving cognitive abilities; however, research in the schizophrenia population remains scarce. The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of neurofeedback in enhancing speed, accuracy, and productivity on entry-level vocational activities. Thirty-four individuals with schizophrenia underwent

Beta to low-gamma rhythmic brain stimulation over primary motor cortex and supplementary motor area differentially modulates oscillatory neural drives during gait.

Non-invasive brain stimulation such as transcranial direct current stimulation over the primary motor cortex (M1) and supplementary motor area (SMA) during gait can positively affect gait ability in patients after stroke; however, the frequency-specific modulatory effects of rhythmic brain stimulation over the M1 and SMA on the oscillatory neural drives during gait remain unclear. Therefore, we investigated the effects of the alpha and beta to low-gamma oscillatory transcranial direct current stimulation (otDCS) over the M1 and SMA on the oscillatory neural drives to lower limb muscles during

Altered subthalamic alpha-beta oscillations in PRKN-associated early onset Parkinson's disease in relation to off-dystonia.

INTRODUCTION: Electrophysiological features of monogenic early onset Parkinson's disease (EOPD) are poorly studied. This lack of knowledge hinders the development of personalized therapy for patients suffering from these PD forms. In this work, we aimed to investigate the differences in STN activity in patients with PRKN mutation and idiopathic EOPD (iEOPD). METHODS: All the patients underwent clinical evaluation assessing their disease phenotype. We utilized MLPA to test for the mutations in target genes and selected six patients with homozygous ex.8 deletion in PRKN gene. Seven patients wit

Comparison of electroencephalogram between propofol- and thiopental-induced anesthesia for awareness risk in pregnant women.

There have been few comparative studies using electroencephalogram (EEG) spectral characteristics during the induction of general anesthesia for cesarean section. This retrospective study investigated the differences in the depth of anesthesia through EEG analysis between propofol- and thiopental-induced anesthesia. We reviewed data of 42 patients undergoing cesarean section who received either thiopental (5 mg/kg) or propofol (2 mg/kg). EEG data were extracted from the bispectral index (BIS) monitor, and 10-second segments were selected from the following sections: 1) Stage I, BIS below 60 af

Low-frequency rTMS stimulation over superior parietal cortex medially improves time reproduction and increases the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex predominance.

AIM OF THE STUDY: Previous studies have shown that several cortical regions are involved in temporal tasks in multiple timescales. However, the hemispheric predominance of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) during time reproduction after repetitive low-frequency transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is relatively unexplored. Here, we study the effects of 1 Hz rTMS and sham stimulation applied medially over the superior parietal cortex (SPC) on the DLPFC alpha and beta band asymmetry and on time reproduction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For this purpose, we have combined rTMS with electr

Delta-beta correlation as a candidate endophenotype of social anxiety: A two-generation family study.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by an extreme and intense fear and avoidance of social situations. In this two-generation family study we examined delta-beta correlation during a social performance task as candidate endophenotype of SAD. METHODS: Nine families with a target participant (diagnosed with SAD), their spouse and children, as well as target's siblings with spouse and children performed a social performance task in which they gave a speech in front of a camera. EEG was measured during resting state, anticipation, and recovery. Our analyses focused on two c

Third order spectral analysis robust to mixing artifacts for mapping cross-frequency interactions in EEG/MEG.

We present a novel approach to the third order spectral analysis, commonly called bispectral analysis, of electroencephalographic (EEG) and … cross-frequency interaction is observed between brain sources at 10Hz and 20Hz, i.e., for alpha and beta rhythms. This interaction is then projected from signal to source level by using a fit-based procedure. This approach highlights a 10-20Hz dominant interaction localized in an occipito-parieto-central network.

[BRASH syndrome: a case report with full reversibility].

BRASH syndrome is a recently described and likely underdiagnosed clinical entity characterized by the synergistic interaction between bradycardia, renal failure, hyperkalemia, and the use of atrioventricular nodal blocking agents, which may lead to significant hemodynamic instability. We report the case of a 70-year-old patient with chronic ischemic heart disease and heart failure who presented with severe clinical and metabolic deterioration. Initial evaluation revealed extreme bradycardia with a junctional rhythm and severe hyperkalemia in the setting of worsening renal function and treatmen

Wavelet packet analysis of EEG signals from dyslexic children with writing disability.

This paper describes Wavelet Packet Analysis of EEG signal of dyslexic children with writing disability. Two activities were carried out during EEG recordings; relax and and writing letters. EEG signals were collected using biosignal gMobilab system and analysed using Wavelet Packet Decomposition to extract alpha and beta brainwave rhythm. Statistical data such as log energy entropy and standard deviation were used to compare the characteristic of EEG signals from dyslexic and normal children. Result showed that the dyslexic children consumed higher energy at left parietal lobe during writing

Celiprolol: its profile as a potential antiarrhythmic agent.

Preliminary animal studies indicate tha celiprolol has antiarrhythmic properties. Animal and clinical electrophysiologic studies suggest that the antiarrhythmic activity is from celiprolol beta-blocking effects (class II antiarrhythmic). Studies with anesthetized dogs show that celiprolol elevates the ventricular fibrillation threshold. An unexpected finding in the canine infarct drug model is the spontaneous conversion of ventricular fibrillation to normal sinus rhythm. The beta2-agonist property of celiprolol may account for this observation. In a clinical study celiprolol has bee found to d

Update on management of cardiac arrhythmias in acute coronary syndromes.

This review summarizes different types of arrhythmias in patients with acute coronary syndromes and provides an overview of the available therapeutic options for acute care and management of critical arrhythmias. The different therapeutic options are depending on the origin and type of arrhythmia. The main common dominant mechanisms are intramural re-entry in ischemia and triggered activity in reperfusion. The different forms of arrhythmia were explained in detail. Atrial arrhythmias are mainly atrial fibrillation; other forms are rare and usually self-limited. As therapeutic options antiarrhy

Time Course of Brain Network Reconfiguration Supporting Inhibitory Control.

Hemodynamic research has recently clarified key nodes and links in brain networks implementing inhibitory control. Although fMRI methods are optimized for identifying the structure of brain networks, the relatively slow temporal course of fMRI limits the ability to characterize network operation. The latter is crucial for developing a mechanistic understanding of how brain networks shift dynamically to support inhibitory control. To address this critical gap, we applied spectrally resolved Granger causality (GC) and random forest machine learning tools to human EEG data in two large samples of

Cortical activity differs during nicotine deprivation versus satiation in heavy smokers.

RATIONALE: Research suggests that nicotine deprivation among smokers is associated with lesser resting cortical activity (i.e., greater power density in theta and alpha-1 EEG bands and lesser power in beta bands). These changes in cortical activity may be indicative of withdrawal-related cognitive deficits, yet the markers of differences in cortical activity are not well-established. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to clarify the EEG frequency bands affected by nicotine deprivation and assess prospective moderators. METHOD: One hundred twenty-four heavy smokers visited the laborato

Spectra-temporal patterns underlying mental addition: an ERP and ERD/ERS study.

Functional neuroimaging data have shown that mental calculation involves fronto-parietal areas that are composed of different subsystems shared with other cognitive functions such as working memory and language. Event-related potential (ERP) analysis has also indicated sequential information changes during the calculation process. However, little is known about the dynamic properties of oscillatory networks in this process. In the present study, we applied both ERP and event-related (de-)synchronization (ERS/ERD) analyses to EEG data recorded from normal human subjects performing tasks for seq

Epidemiology, prognosis, and challenges in the management of hyperthyroidism-related atrial fibrillation.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common condition with a global estimated prevalence of 60 million cases, and the most common cardiac complication of hyperthyroidism, occurring in 5-15% of overtly hyperthyroid patients. Additionally, subclinical hyperthyroidism and high-normal free T4 have been associated with an increased risk in the development of AF. Hyperthyroidism-related AF is a reversible cause of AF, and the majority of patients spontaneously revert to sinus rhythm in 4-6 months during or after restoration of euthyroidism. Therefore, restoring thyroid function is an indispensable element

Rhythmic Network Modulation to Thalamocortical Couplings in Epilepsy.

Thalamus interacts with cortical areas, generating oscillations characterized by their rhythm and levels of synchrony. However, little is known of what function the rhythmic dynamic may serve in thalamocortical couplings. This work introduced a general approach to investigate the modulatory contribution of rhythmic scalp network to the thalamo-frontal couplings in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) and frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE). Here, time-varying rhythmic network was constructed using the adapted directed transfer function between EEG electrodes, and then was applied as a modulator in fMRI-b
