Holiday Heart Syndrome in a 22-Year-Old Male: A Case Report.

Holiday heart syndrome (HHS) is an acute cardiac arrhythmia following an episode of binge drinking. We report a healthy 22-year-old male with HHS after one night of binge drinking. The patient had no family history of cardiomyopathy, arrhythmia, or cardiac disease. Diagnosis was made after a thorough workup, including imaging and laboratory analysis. After a two-year period with no repeat episodes of arrhythmia, the patient decided to follow up with electrophysiology on an as-needed basis. It is important for providers to consider HHS as a possible diagnosis of exclusion in cases of arrhythmia

The Relationship Between the U.S. State Alcohol Policy Environment and Individuals' Experience of Secondhand Effects: Alcohol Harms Due to Others' Drinking.

BACKGROUND: Although restrictive state alcohol policy environments are protective for individuals' binge drinking, research is sparse on the effect of alcohol policies on alcohol's harms to others (AHTO). We examined the lagged associations between efficacy of U.S. state alcohol policies and number of harms from others' drinking 1 year later. METHODS: Individuals with AHTO data in a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults (analytic sample n = 26,744) that pooled the 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015 National Alcohol Surveys and a 2015 National Alcohol's Harm to Others Survey were linked with

Motivational interviewing + feedback intervention to reduce alcohol-exposed pregnancy risk among college binge drinkers: determinants and patterns of response.

Many college women are at risk for pregnancy, and binge drinking college women are often at risk for alcohol-exposed pregnancy. Brief interventions with sustainable outcomes are needed, particularly for college women who are binge drinking, at risk for pregnancy, and at increased risk of alcohol-exposed pregnancy. Two-hundred-twenty-eight women at a Mid-Atlantic urban university at risk for alcohol-exposed pregnancy enrolled in the randomized clinical trial, and 207 completed the 4 month follow-up. The BALANCE intervention used Motivational Interviewing plus feedback to target drinking and con

Characteristic associated with alcohol drinking in early pregnancy: a cross sectional study.

We aimed to identify characteristics associated with alcohol drinking before and during pregnancy to better target pregnancy guidance and public health campaigns. A cross sectional study including 1895 pregnant women interviewed at 16 weeks' gestation. Information on characteristics and drinking habits before and during pregnancy was collected by in-person interview. Associations between characteristics and alcohol consumption were estimated by ordinal logistic regression models. Average alcohol intake before pregnancy was categorised; 0; > 0-3; > 3-6; > 6 drinks/week; and intake during pregna

Health risk and behaviour of out-of-school 16-year-olds in New South Wales.

This study describes the health risks and health behaviour of a sample of 283 out-of-school 16-year-olds in New South Wales. We sampled study participants through the Commonwealth Employment Service offices in 1994 using a multistage sampling procedure. Of those surveyed, 129 responded to a letter inviting them to participate and 154 were recruited opportunistically. This paper describes the study methods and results for self-reported binge drinking, weekly use of tobacco and marijuana, sexual abuse, physical abuse, drink-driving, violence, and use of health services, by sex and method of recr

A harmonized analysis of five Canadian pregnancy cohort studies: exploring the characteristics and pregnancy outcomes associated with prenatal alcohol exposure.

BACKGROUND: As a teratogen, alcohol exposure during pregnancy can impact fetal development and result in adverse birth outcomes. Despite the clinical and social importance of prenatal alcohol use, limited routinely collected information or epidemiological data exists in Canada. The aim of this study was to pool data from multiple Canadian cohort studies to identify sociodemographic characteristics before and during pregnancy that were associated with alcohol consumption during pregnancy and to assess the impact of different patterns of alcohol use on birth outcomes. METHODS: We harmonized inf

Comparison of drinking and smoking patterns during pregnancy over a six-year interval.

Changes in the drinking and smoking habits of pregnant women in Seattle, Washington, were examined in the 6-year period that followed the first American announcement of the fetal alcohol syndrome. Between 1974/1975 and 1980/1981, the number of women who reported any alcohol use around the time of the first prenatal visit dropped from 81% to 42%, whereas the number of smokers dropped from 25% to 22%; binge and heavier drinking also declined. However, among drinkers, there was no decrease in the proportion of women who reported heavier drinking. Although the proportion of women who drink during

Neurocognitive Markers during Maximum Alcohol Use in Late Adolescence as Predictors of Change in Later Drinking Behaviors.

BACKGROUND: The influence of alcohol use on later neurocognitive functioning is well researched, yet few studies have investigated whether neurocognition post-drinking initiation in adolescence predicts changes in later alcohol use. OBJECTIVE: Investigate neurocognitive task performance during maximum alcohol use in late adolescence as predictors of drinking behaviors 3-7 years later. METHODS: Analyses (n=105) were conducted on a longitudinal dataset involving adolescents (12-13 years-old) who were followed for 16 years. Time 1 (T1) was defined as the individuals' maximum drinking year withi

Developmental relationships between adolescent substance use and risky sexual behavior in young adulthood.

To examine the developmental relationship between adolescent substance use and risky sexual behavior in young adulthood. A gender-balanced, ethnically diverse urban sample of 808 children in Seattle was surveyed at age 10 years in 1985 and followed prospectively to age 21 years in 1996. Semiparametric group-based modeling was used to determine trajectory groups of binge-drinking, cigarette smoking, marijuana use, and the use of other illicit drugs. Negative binomial regressions and logistic regressions were used to examine whether these trajectory groups predicted the number of sex partners an

Associations of discrimination, mental health symptoms, and substance use among sexual and gender minority young adults: Differences by type and source of social support.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) young adults display higher rates of mental health symptoms and substance use, partially due to minority stressors, such as discrimination. Social support may mitigate these negative effects, but less is known about which types and sources of support are most beneficial. METHODS: We analyzed 2 waves of survey data among 549 SGM young adults (ages 18-25) residing in Oklahoma and surrounding states. Logistic regressions examined: 1) main effects of discrimination and specific types (i.e., general, SGM specific) and sources (i.e., parent, peer, comm

Associations between intimacy and health behaviours among older adults in romantic relationships: a cross-sectional survey conducted in the mid-Atlantic USA.

INTRODUCTION: Being in a romantic relationship can be associated with positive health outcomes. However, little is known about how characteristics of these relationships influence health among older adults. METHODS: Adults (aged 50+ years) from seven mid-Atlantic US states completed an online survey, which included measures of emotional, intellectual and sexual intimacy from the Personal Assessment of Intimacy in Relationships Inventory. We conducted logistic regression analyses of relationship intimacy scores and health behaviours (having a recent healthcare check-up, current smoking and rec

Maternal alcohol use before and during pregnancy among women in Taranaki, New Zealand.

AIMS: The study researched alcohol consumption and drinking patterns before and during pregnancy. METHOD: This was a 1 month self report survey of postnatal women from 21 May-22 June 2006. A multiple choice questionnaire was handed out to them on the first or second postnatal day. RESULTS: There were a total of 117 deliveries. The questionnaire was completed by 100 of the 104 women who received it. Before pregnancy, 80% of women reported drinking alcohol; 66% binge drinking. Twenty-eight percent continued consuming alcohol throughout pregnancy. The majority did reduce or stop their alcohol c

Adolescent Binge Ethanol Exposure Confers Lasting Adult Alcohol Tolerance due to Neuroimmune Activation: Reversal by Inhibition of HMGB1.

Epidemiological studies suggest heavy adolescent binge drinking is strongly associated with later development of an alcohol use disorder (AUD). Alcohol tolerance (i.e., an acquired reduction in acute alcohol responsivity) is a universally recognized symptom of AUD, but the direct contribution of adolescent binge drinking to adult alcohol tolerance is poorly understood. To investigate the contributions of adolescent binge ethanol exposure to lasting acquisition of acute tolerance, we used our ethanol response battery (ERB) to assess intoxication rating, hypothermia, motor coordination and balan

Differential alterations of insular cortex excitability after adolescent or adult chronic intermittent ethanol administration in male rats.

Adolescent alcohol drinking, primarily in the form of binge-drinking episodes, is a serious public health concern. Binge drinking in laboratory animals has been modeled by a procedure involving chronic intermittent ethanol (CIE) administration, as compared with chronic intermittent water (CIW). The prolonged effects of adolescent binge alcohol exposure in adults, such as high risk of developing alcohol use disorder, are severe but available treatments in the clinic are limited. One reason is the lack of sufficient understanding about the associated neuronal alterations. The involvement of the

Alcohol, HMGB1, and Innate Immune Signaling in the Brain.

PURPOSE: Binge drinking (i.e., consuming enough alcohol to achieve a blood ethanol concentration of 80 mg/dL, approximately 4-5 drinks within 2 hours), particularly in early adolescence, can promote progressive increases in alcohol drinking and alcohol-related problems that develop into compulsive use in the chronic relapsing disease, alcohol use disorder (AUD). Over the past decade, neuroimmune signaling has been discovered to contribute to alcohol-induced changes in drinking, mood, and neurodegeneration. This review presents a mechanistic hypothesis supporting high mobility group box protein

The Changing Relationship Between Hobby Engagement and Substance Use in Young People: Latent Growth Modelling of the Add Health Cohort.

Cross-sectional and some longitudinal evidence suggests doing hobbies can reduce substance use, but findings have been inconsistent, and whether associations differ across adolescence remains unclear. This study included 7454 Add Health participants (50% female, 77% White, age mean=14.95 and SD = 1.56). Participants were split into three groups, according to whether they were early (aged 11-14 at baseline), mid (aged 15-16), or late (aged 17-20) adolescents at baseline. The trajectories of binge drinking, marijuana, and tobacco use were analysed in latent growth models across Waves 1-5 (1994-2
