PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Dysfunctional voiding is defined as "habitual contraction of the urethral sphincter during voiding." Children with dysfunctional voiding remain a challenge, and the approach to and management of LUT dysfunction varies widely among programs and providers with the role of pharmacotherapy being ill defined.
RECENT FINDINGS: Animated biofeedback is the current treatment modality of choice in children who are not responsive to standard urotherapy. Comprehensive biofeedback programs incorporate continued elimination education, voiding diaries, and home exercises with high success

Most residual speech errors (RSEs) involve abnormal positioning or movement of the tongue. However, it is not possible under normal circumstances to view directly the actions of the tongue during production of these distorted articulations. The visually inaccessible location of the tongue can often make precise diagnosis difficult in cases of RSEs, and intervention can be a particular challenge for clinicians when speech errors persist in older children and adults. Electropalatography (EPG) is a technique that can provide objective and clinically relevant data about details of tongue articulat

Several approaches to the treatment of bulimia nervosa have proved effective, including cognitive-behavioral therapy; however, not all patients improve. It is therefore necessary to explore the possibilities of increasing the efficacy of such treatments. One way to attempt this is to incorporate new technologies. This review explores the possibility of developing a new, empirically validated procedure for the treatment of bulimia nervosa patients that involves cue exposure via virtual reality.

A 27-year-old Somali woman with type III a-b female genital mutilation/cutting, consulted because of slow micturition, voiding efforts, urgency and urge incontinence (overactive bladder). She also referred primary dysmenorrhoea and superficial dyspareunia making complete sexual intercourses impossible. We treated her by defibulation and biofeedback re-educative therapy. We also offered a multidisciplinary counselling. At 5 months follow-up, urgency and urge incontinence had resolved and she became pregnant.

Hyperventilation-induced hypocapnia is common among asthma patients. This case study illustrates both methodology and results from a patient undergoing training in capnometry-assisted respiratory training (CART). CART is a 4-week training aimed at normalizing basal and acute levels of end-tidal carbon dioxide (PCO(2)) using a portable capnometer. In the presented case, basal levels of PCO(2) increased from hypocapnic to normocapnic range over the course of treatment. Improvements were accompanied by improvements in lung function and reductions in diurnal lung function variability. Improvements

It is essential to create a good relationship between a therapist and patient for effective treatment in clinical psychiatry, while we should focus our attention to know the patient's pathology and develop a proper treatment strategy. For this purpose, I always keep five issues in my mind, as follows. First, a good atmosphere will reduce patients' nervousness and anxiety. Second, listening carefully to patients' descriptions of symptoms. Careful listening will help us to understand the meaning of the symptoms for the patients. Also, we will gain the patients' confidence, as it engenders sincer

Biofeedback of trunk sway is a possible remedy for patients with balance disorders. Because these patients have a tendency to fall more in one direction, we investigated whether biofeedback has a directional effect on trunk sway during gait. Forty healthy young participants (mean age 23.1 years) performed 10 gait tasks with and without biofeedback. Combined vibrotactile, auditory and visual feedback on trunk sway in either the lateral or anterior-posterior (AP) direction was provided by a head-mounted actuator system. Trunk roll and pitch angles, calculated from trunk angular velocities measur

Facial synkinesis is one of the most distressing consequences of facial paralysis. Synkinesis refers to the abnormal involuntary facial movement that occurs with voluntary movement of a different facial muscle group. The pathophysiologic basis of facial synkinesis is likely multifactorial although the predominant mechanism appears to be aberrant regeneration of facial nerve fibers to the facial muscle groups after facial nerve injury. Patients experience hypertonic contractures and synkinetic movements such as eye closure with volitional movement of the mouth or midfacial movement during volit

Primary headache disorders are often accompanied by neck pain or other symptoms referable to neck muscles. Therefore, physical therapy and other physical treatments are commonly prescribed for headache management. A medical literature review was completed in order to gather information regarding the efficacy of selected physical modalities in the treatment of primary and cervicogenic headache disorders. After analyzing the collected data, expert opinions were developed regarding the utility and efficacy of selected physical modalities in the management of primary and cervicogenic headaches. Ba

The effect of therapy and altered auditory feedback (AAF) on the perception of speech naturalness of people who stutter was examined. Thirty-five naive young adult listeners rated speech samples from fluent speakers and individuals who stutter. Samples came from normal adults who spoke Standard American English; adults with mild or severe stuttering who spoke under conditions of non-altered feedback (NAF), delayed auditory feedback (DAF), and frequency-altered feedback (FAF); and adults with mild or severe stuttering prior to and following successful completion of a Precision Fluency Shaping P

According to cognitive behavioural models of social phobia, bodily symptoms are the main source of information concerning social evaluation for social phobics. Experience and perception of bodily symptoms therefore play an important role in social anxiety. In this study we evaluated the effects of anxiety visibility on patients and controls using feedback of veridical heart sounds. A total of 32 social phobics and 32 controls were asked twice to sit in a chair and appear relaxed while being evaluated. Half of the participants heard their heart sounds first via headphones and then via loudspeak

Gynaecologists have become increasingly aware of the need to offer conservative therapy for genuine stress incontinence. There is good objective evidence from randomized controlled trials to support the use of supervised pelvic floor exercises. The efficacy of biofeedback therapy, vaginal cone weights and electrostimulation therapy is variable and requires further study to identify those women who will benefit the most. The mainstay of therapy for detrusor instability/sensory urgency remains bladder training, which has proven objective efficacy, but new treatments such as transcutaneous electr

The relative efficacy of EMG-frontalis feedback and progressive relaxation was examined in children with tension-type or combined headaches (8-14 yrs. old). Furthermore, the influence of parent involvement, in the form of a three-session educational approach, on training outcome was systematically explored (2 x 2 factor design). Fifty children took part in the study, 40 were randomly assigned to the four different treatment conditions, 10 children participated in the self-monitoring control group. The training comprised 6 sessions of 1 hr each in the relaxation treatment and 12 sessions of 1/2
