Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Widows' Experiences of Grief, Identity, and Support: A Qualitative Study of Relationships Following the Loss of a Spouse or Partner.

OBJECTIVES: Research with lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) older widows rarely focuses on familial relationships. Studies on heterosexual spousal bereavement indicate older widows face issues influencing identity but show resilience by maintaining close relationships with adult children and extended family. Though research with older LGB widows suggests similarities around loss and resilience, grief and family engagement are markedly different. METHODS: Guided by Relational Cultural Theory, which illuminates how LGB women cope through connection/disconnection, this qualitative descriptive stu

Egocentric sexual network analysis among gay and bisexual men who have sex with men with and without mpox infection.

OBJECTIVES: Recent outbreaks of the mpox (monkeypox) virus have been detected in dense sexual networks of gay and bisexual men who have sex with men (GBMSM). The objective of this study is to describe and compare the epidemiological and behavioural characteristics, as well as the sexual networks, of GBMSM diagnosed with mild mpox in Spain. METHODS: A prospective case-control study was conducted in Spain from July 2022 to February 2023. The study targeted a key population of GBMSM aged 18 years or older. Study participants were categorised into cases, those who were diagnosed with mpox virus i

HIV, chemsex, and the need for harm-reduction interventions to support gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men.

Numerous studies have identified an association between the use of drugs in sexual contexts (chemsex) and HIV among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM), although whether a causal relationship exists is contentious. An intricate relationship exists between chemsex, HIV treatment and prevention, harm reduction, and the provision of community-grounded health services. Furthermore, potential harms exist beyond HIV, such as intoxication and overdose. Community-engaged responses to chemsex involve social and cultural strategies of harm reduction and sexual health promotion bef

Determinants of Willingness to Use PrEP Among Gay and Bisexual Men in China Before Implementation: A Structural Equation Modeling Assessment.

With the recent endorsement of PrEP by the Chinese government, research is urgently needed to better understand factors impacting PrEP uptake among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) in China. This study examined willingness to use PrEP for HIV prevention among GBMSM in China through structural equation modeling. We examined the relationship among PrEP-related attitudes, subjective norms, PrEP-related knowledge and beliefs about medicines and willingness to use PrEP. The analysis showed a good fit between the data and both the measurement model (RMSEA = 0.060) and struc

Childhood Sexual Abuse and Associated Suicidal Ideation and Attempts Among Gay and Bisexual Men in China: A Moderated Mediation Model.

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is a critical risk factor for suicidal ideation and attempts, especially among gay and bisexual men who experience living as a minority. However, whether internalized homophobia (IH) underlies suicide risk and the role of outness to one's family in this association warrants investigation to inform preventive interventions. Using a cross-sectional survey of 570 gay and bisexual men in China, we examined the relationship between CSA and suicidality in the Chinese context and tested a moderated mediation model in this relationship. Nearly 65.6% of the participants had

Structural Stigma and Sexual Health Disparities Among Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Discrimination and stigmatization at the institutional and sociocultural level (conceptualized as "structural stigma") has been associated with adverse health outcomes among sexual and gender minorities. However, few studies explore whether structural stigma is associated with sexual health outcomes. Addressing this gap, here, we explore this relationship among Australian gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM)-a population disproportionately affected by HIV. SETTING AND METHODS: Using responses from the 2017 Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey, we operationaliz

Seroadaptive Strategy Patterns of Young Black Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men in Atlanta, Georgia.

BACKGROUND: Young Black gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (YBMSM) are disproportionally affected by HIV. Seroadaptive strategies-modification of sexual behavior based on an individual's perceived serostatus, the perceived status of the partner, and/or HIV transmission risk by the type of sex act-are often used to reduce the risk of HIV transmission or acquisition. METHODS: We used demographic, behavioral, and clinical data from Ele[MEN]t, a prospective cohort study of YBMSM aged 18-29 years in Atlanta, GA, conducted during 2015-2019. The prevalence of seroadaptive strategies

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake and adherence experiences of gay and bisexual men who engage in chemsex: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is the use of HIV antiretroviral medications to reduce the risk of HIV acquisition. PrEP is highly effective when used during periods of potential HIV exposure. Gay and bisexual men (GBM) who engage in unprotected chemsex (without condoms or PrEP) are at high-risk of acquiring HIV. Substance use has been shown to detrimentally impact on the effective use of HIV treatment among GBM living with HIV. This study aims to qualitatively explore PrEP uptake and adherence among GBM who engage in chemsex in the United Kingdom. METHODS: Nineteen semi-structure

Self-reported anal symptoms and their association with anal pathology among gay and bisexual men: a cross-sectional observational analysis.

UNLABELLED: Background Anal symptoms may indicate serious pathology. Receptive anal intercourse (RAI) and sexually transmissible infections (STIs) may contribute to a higher prevalence of symptoms among gay and bisexual men (GBM). This study investigated associations with anal symptoms among GBM. METHODS: The Study of the Prevention of Anal Cancer was a longitudinal study of anal human papillomavirus and related lesions in Sydney, Australia. GBM aged ≥35 years were recruited from community settings between September 2010 and August 2015. Information about anal symptoms (discharge, itch, pain

Interest, Personality, and Sexual Traits That Distinguish Heterosexual, Bisexual, and Homosexual Individuals: Are There Two Dimensions That Underlie Variations in Sexual Orientation?

A diverse U.S. sample comprising 1437 men and 1474 women was assessed on sexual orientation, masculinity-femininity of occupational preferences (MF-Occ), self-ascribed masculinity-femininity (Self-MF), Big Five personality traits, sex drive, and sociosexuality (positive attitudes toward uncommitted sex). Discriminant analyses explored which traits best distinguished self-identified heterosexual, bisexual, and homosexual individuals within each sex. These analyses correctly classified the sexual orientation of 55% of men and 60% of women, which was substantially better than a chance rate (33%)

Strategies for inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA+) education throughout pharmacy school curricula.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and others (LGBTQIA+) patients face stigma and barriers to health care, including a lack of health care professionals' knowledge and confidence in treating this patient population. Pharmacists are in prime position to decrease this health disparity. United States pharmacy schools have limited LGBTQIA+ content, continuing the concern of recent graduates without knowledge and confidence. This commentary discusses potential barriers to introducing LGBTQIA+ content into school of pharmacy curricula and presents five strategies currentl

Youth-Serving Professionals' Perspectives on HIV Prevention Tools and Strategies Appropriate for Adolescent Gay and Bisexual Males and Transgender Youth.

INTRODUCTION: HIV disproportionally burdens adolescent men who have sex with men (AMSM) and transgender youth. This study explores barriers and facilitators that professionals face in delivering HIV preventive services and education. METHODS: Adolescent health providers (nurse practitioners, physicians, and other), school nurses, youth workers, and school educators were recruited nationally for this qualitative study. RESULTS: Thirty-four professionals participated. Common categories identified across professional group were (1) effective strategies for building trust with youth, (2) perceiv

HIV Stigma and Older Men's Psychological Well-Being: Do Coping Resources Differ for Gay/Bisexual and Straight Men?

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated whether sexual orientation moderated the mediation effects of coping resources (i.e., spirituality and complementary and integrative health [CIH] use) in the relationship between HIV stigma and psychological well-being (PWB) among older men with HIV (MWH). METHOD: Data from the Research of Older Adults with HIV (ROAH) study was used (N = 640, Age 50+). Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to examine a coping resource mediation model. We used a multiple-group procedure to test moderation effects by sexual orientation. RESULTS: HIV stigma was nega

Hepatitis C risk perceptions and attitudes towards reinfection among HIV-diagnosed gay and bisexual men in Melbourne, Australia.

INTRODUCTION: Gay and bisexual men (GBM) are at increased risk of hepatitis C/HIV co-infection. In Australia, the availability of subsidized direct-acting antiviral treatment for hepatitis C has rendered eliminating co-infection possible. High reinfection rates in subgroups with continued exposure may compromise elimination efforts. To inform the development of hepatitis C risk reduction support in GBM, we explored reinfection risk perceptions and attitudes among GBM living with HIV recently cured from hepatitis C. METHODS: Between April and August 2017, 15 GBM living with diagnosed HIV were

"No-one's driving this bus" - qualitative analysis of PrEP health promotion for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander gay and bisexual men.

OBJECTIVE: HIV prevention tools such as pre-exposure prophylaxis require equitable access and uptake to protect all at-risk populations. This project assessed the perceived barriers to accessible HIV prevention for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander gay and bisexual men (GBM) and evaluated the presence of health promotion for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for this population from the perspective of service providers. METHODS: Eighteen semi-structured interviews with healthcare providers, researchers and AIDS Council employees were qualitatively analysed for themes and concepts related to

Implications of survey labels and categorisations for understanding drug use in the context of sex among gay and bisexual men in Melbourne, Australia.

BACKGROUND: Reliably measuring drug use by gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBM) in the context of sex can inform sexual health service responses. We report changing drug use patterns among GBM testing for HIV at a community-based service in Melbourne in response to behavioural survey modifications. METHODS: Surveys were completed by GBM prior to all HIV tests. Survey one asked about use of "party drugs for the purpose of sex" and survey two asked about specific drug use (alcohol, amyl nitrate, methamphetamine, cocaine, ecstasy, GHB, Viagra®/Cialis®) before or during sex. Chemsex among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men in Singapore and the challenges ahead: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Sexualised substance use, or 'chemsex' has been shown to be a major factor driving the syndemic of HIV/AIDS in communities of gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) around the world. However, there is a paucity of research on chemsex among GBMSM in Singapore due to punitive drug laws and the criminalisation of sexual behaviour between men. This qualitative descriptive study is the first to explore perceptions towards, motivators to engaging in, and the barriers to addressing the harms associated with chemsex among GBMSM in Singapore. METHODS: We conducted 30 se

Age moderates the relationship between source of social support and mental health in racial minority lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth.

We examined the relationship between source of social support and mental health (and the moderating impact of age) in 64 low socioeconomic status, racial minority lesbian, gay, and bisexual adolescents/young adults. Social support from family ( β = -.302, p = .03; β = -.364, p = .008), but not friends or significant others, was independently related to posttraumatic stress disorder and depression symptoms, respectively. Family social support was associated with lower posttraumatic stress disorder and depression symptoms in participants aged 16-19 years, while friend social support was associat

HIV risk behaviours among immigrant and ethnic minority gay and bisexual men in North America and Europe: A systematic review.

HIV surveillance systems show that gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) bear a disproportionate burden of HIV in North American and European countries. Within the MSM category, HIV prevalence is often elevated among ethnic minority (i.e., Latino, Asian, and Black) MSM, many of whom are also foreign-born immigrants. Little research has focused specifically on foreign-born populations, though studies that provide data on the nativity of their samples offer an opportunity to investigate the potential role of transnational migration in informing HIV risk among ethnic minority M

Quantifying the Harms and Benefits from Serosorting Among HIV-Negative Gay and Bisexual Men: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the association between serosorting and HIV infection among HIV-negative men who have sex with men (MSM). Compared to no condomless anal sex (i.e., consistent condom use or no anal sex), serosorting was associated with increased HIV risk (RR = 1.64, 95% CI 1.37-1.96). Compared to condomless discordant anal sex, serosorting was associated with reduced HIV risk (RR = 0.46, 95% CI 0.33-0.65). Serosorting may be an important harm reduction strategy when condoms are not consistently used, but can be harmful if HIV-negative MSM who consistently u
