Cortical blindness in a boy with acute glomerulonephritis.

Post-infectious acute glomerulonephritis with hypertensive encephalopathy is characterized by episodic hypertension with headache, vomiting, and hematuria. The association between hypertensive encephalopathy and cortical blindness in children with acute glomerulonephritis is extremely rare. We report the case of a 10-year-old boy with acute glomerulonephritis who presented with gross hematuria, headache, vomiting, and oliguria, and developed transient cortical blindness as a complication of hypertensive encephalopathy. No occurrence of seizure was observed during the clinical course. T2-weight…

[Vision 2020: 100 years of river blindness research].

BACKGROUND: The early investigators of onchocerciasis from 1874 - 1930 in Africa made no mention at all of concomitant severe eye disease. Publications of the observations in Central America in 1917/1919 prompted some specialists in tropical medicine to look for eye disease associated with African onchocerciasis. However, there did not seem to be any eye disease leading to blindness. It was not until 1930/1931 that Hissette reported that 20 % of patients with onchocerciasis were blind in an onchocerciasis focus on the Sankuru river in the Belgian Congo, and that 50 % of the villagers suffered …

Ten years of NGDO action against river blindness.

For a decade, a dozen non-governmental development organizations (NGDOs) have organized themselves into a Geneva-based coordination group with the goal of global control of onchocerciasis through mass distribution of ivermectin (Mectizan(R)). Members of this group have worked with Ministries of Health and other partners to empower communities affected by the disease to take responsibility for their own treatment. The NGDO Group has played a key role in the governance of international onchocerciasis control effort, particularly as a partner within the African Programme for Onchocerciasis Contro

[The present state of blindness in the world].

PURPOSE: To investigate the present state of blindness around the world. METHODS: The article reviews significant studies by WHO and literature on the topic. RESULTS: Current global estimates indicate that blindness affects close to 45 million people, with nine out of ten blind people living in developing countries. Two-thirds or more of all blindness is avoidable, in that the causes are preventable or treatable. Cataract is the major cause of blindness in the world and the number of cases is increasing. The second cause is glaucoma, and the third is trachoma. The extent of disability of bli…

Acute blindness and putaminal necrosis in methanol intoxication.

PURPOSE: To review the neuro-ophthalmological and radiological findings of acute methyl alcohol intoxication. METHOD: 8 acute methyl alcoho … ement in vision. [Bilateral blindness after injury in a riding horse].

Bilateral blindness was diagnosed in a 5-year-old Hanoverian gelding presented for evaluation of a corneal opacity in one eye. About 12 months prior to the examination, the gelding had fallen head over, hitting his head and the cornea. Clinical and electroretinographic findings as well as pathohistologic and ultrastructural lesions of both eyes including the optic nerves are presented. Ophthalmoscopically visible pigment disruption of the non-tapetal fundus adjacent to the optic discs correlated morphologically with foci of degeneration and atrophy of the retina, whereas ophthalmoscopically vi…

[Chronic subdural hematoma as a cause for blindness].

The uncommon complication of bilateral blindness resulting from a decompressive neurosurgical procedure is presented by the case of a 51-year old patient suffering from a traumatic chronic subdural haematoma. A breakdown of the altered vasoregulation of the optic nerves due to papilledema at the time of intracranial pressure drop is supposed to be the etiological background of optic atrophy and consequent amaurosis. The causal relationship of accident trauma and blindness in the presented case is pointed out.

Present challenges in the global prevention of blindness.

Cataract is responsible for 50% of world blindness, with at present an estimated backlog of 13.5 million cases in need of surgery. Low-cost cataract surgery must be made more available in developing countries, making use of alternative approaches for outpatient surgery and optimal management of available resources. Trachoma control needs to be targeted at the worst affected areas in endemic countries, with more emphasis on behavioural, educational and community aspects of the disease. Vitamin A deficiency and xerophthalmia control are becoming matters of maternal and child health care, with ea…

Prevalence of colour blindness among patients with leprosy.

Using Ishihara test plates the prevalence of colour blindness was studied on six hundred and ninety-seven leprosy patients and two hundred and ninety-two normal healthy controls. 7.88% of male patients with tuberculoid leprosy, 12.18% of male patients with lepromatous leprosy, and 0.67% of male controls were detected to be colour blind (red-green deficiency or total colour weakness). The differences between the different groups are significant. Among female patients and controls, only one lepromatous leprosy patient was detected to have red-green deficiency. This suggests the possibility of a …

Visual impairment and blindness in ocular toxoplasmosis cases.

Ocular toxoplasmosis is a common vision-threatening disease in Indonesia. Diagnosis of this disease is based on characteristic ophthalmoscopic appearances and laboratory findings. Between 1985 and 1989, the authors retrospectively evaluated 41 children under 12 years of age. Thirteen cases had retinal lesions suspected to be toxoplasmosis but the laboratory findings were negative. The remaining 28 children had a total of 41 eyes diagnosed as ocular toxoplasmosis. Of the 41 affected eyes, vision had decreased to finger counting or less in 23 (56%) eyes and to less than 6/15 in 9 (22%) eyes. In

Burkitt's lymphoma presenting with blindness: a case report.

A 10-year-old schoolboy was referred to the Ophthalmic Unit of Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital because of sudden loss of sight following 5 days of severe frontal headache. The child had bilateral ptosis with internal and external ophthalmoplegia and fixed and dilated pupils. There was no papilloedema. Eight days later, a jaw tumour and a rapidly enlarging abdominal tumour appeared. A fine needle aspiration biopsy of the jaw tumour confirmed Burkitt's lymphoma. Combination chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide, vincristine and methotrexate (COM) led to a rapid resolution of the jaw and a
