Four pairs of rhesus monkeys and five pairs of baboons were cross-transfused with large volumes of blood given at intervals varying from 3 weeks to 30 months. Although no acute transfusion reactions were observed, there was a significant reduction in survival rate of the transfused erythrocytes correlated with the level of antibodies in recipient's serum. The immune response of the recipient animal depended on the interval between transfusions and, to some extent, on the number and kind of erythrocyte incompatibilities between the recipient and the donor. These results emphasize the importance

In subsaharan Africa, knowledge of the organization and methods of transfusion centers, as well as blood donor characteristics, is essential in choosing strategies to improve transfusion practices and the security of blood products on this Continent. The present study was based on a analysis led in partnership with the transfusion of seven francophone African countries (Burkina-Faso, Cameroon, Congo, Ivory Cost, Mali, Niger, and Rwanda). The results showed that withstanding significant progress has been realized in the organization and safety, but much remains to be undertaken over the years t

Athletes may undergo blood transfusion to increase their red cell mass and the oxygen carrying capacity of their blood in order to confer a competitive advantage. Allogeneic transfusions are normally mismatched at one or more minor blood group antigens. The most sensitive and accurate method known to detect this form of blood doping is flow cytometry. Low percentages of antigen-positive and antigen-negative red blood cells (RBCs) can be quantitated using suitable specific alloantibodies and careful analysis. By testing blood samples taken at various times, a reduction in the percentage of a mi…

To address the potential role of innovative blood conservation interventions in nonelective surgery, we reviewed blood transfusions and blood losses during hospitalization of patients undergoing open reduction internal fixation of an intratrochanteric hip fracture. Sixty-four orthopaedic patients consecutively admitted over a 3-year interval were analyzed for transfusion needs by calculating red blood cell (RBC) volume lost during hospitalization. Overall, 39 (61%) patients received blood. We found that the "transfusion-trigger" was higher for females compared to males. Fifteen (23%) of 64 pat…
