Predictors of current suicidal ideation in a multi-diagnostic sample of individuals with eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with eating disorders (EDs) have high rates of suicidal ideation (SI) and attempts (SA). Fasting, body dissatisfaction, binge eating and purging have been associated with SI in non-clinical samples, individuals with anorexia nervosa or low-weight EDs, and a multi-diagnostic sample. However, few studies have examined how ED symptoms contribute to risk for SI in conjunction with other well-established risk factors, such as nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) and past SA. The aim of this study was to examine which ED symptoms contribute unique risk for current SI in a multi-dia…

Focusing on media body ideal images triggers food intake among restrained eaters: a test of restraint theory and the elaboration likelihood model.

Although research consistently shows that images of thin women in the media (media body ideals) affect women negatively (e.g., increased weight dissatisfaction and food intake), this effect is less clear among restrained eaters. The majority of experiments demonstrate that restrained eaters - identified with the Restraint Scale - consume more food than do other participants after viewing media body ideal images; whereas a minority of experiments suggest that such images trigger restrained eaters' dietary restraint. Weight satisfaction and mood results are just as variable. One reason for these

A study on current status and influencing factors of pregnant women's body image in China: A mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies indicate that negative body image adversely affects the physical and psychological well-being of pregnant women and undermines family harmony, thereby jeopardizing maternal and infant health. Despite its significant impact, this issue has received scant scholarly attention in China. Body image is not formed in isolation; according to the socio-cultural model, it is constructed through the dynamic interplay of socio-cultural context, family interactions, media messages, and social comparisons. Therefore, it is imperative to investigate the current status and influenci
