A foreign body (FB) in the upper aerodigestive tract is a common clinical problem that presents as as acute emergency. Sharp FB, such as fish bone or chicken bone, commonly lodges in the tonsil, base of tongue, vallecula or pyriform fossa. Dislodgement of a FB into the laryngopharynx is very rare and specifically onto the vocal cord is extremely uncommon. This case report illustrates a rare case of a sharp FB that was dislodged into the airway and stuck on to the right vocal cord, which was removed under local anaesthesia.

A 53-year-old man presented with weakness, loss of weight, pain in upper and lower extremities, and back pain. He had an intermittent abscess like discharge from a left hemi scrotal lesion. Thoraco abdomino pelvic computerized tomography revealed diffuse, multiple and hypodense lesions in the liver parenchyma. Bone scan showed multi metastatic disease of the bone. Complete resection of the scrotal lesion was performed. In histopathological examination, apocrine adenocarcinoma was diagnosed.

We present a novel report on the use of bone scintigraphy in pembrolizumab-induced inflammatory arthritis. A 70-year-old man with lung cancer complained about arthralgia after 7 courses of the pembrolizumab therapy. Tc-HMDP bone scintigraphy revealed symmetrically strong uptakes in the major distal joints of the upper and lower extremities, thereby clearly identifying them as the affected joints. The pattern of uptakes was not consistent with that of other pathophysiologies including bone metastases, hypertrophic osteoarthropathy, and rheumatoid arthritis. Tc-HMDP bone scintigraphy is more pra

Progressive diaphyseal dysplasia (PDD), a rare disorder of bones, in recent years has been accepted as a systemic disease within the spectrum of connective tissue disorders associated with immunological abnormalities. Steroids have been used in the treatment of PDD with variable success. In this report PDD is described in a 5-year-old boy who presented with leg pain, fatigue, headache and anorexia with an onset in infancy. Physical examination revealed a waddling gait, thorax deformity and thickening in the upper extremities. The diagnosis was made by radiologic demonstration of cortical thick

Clinical cases in mineral and bone metabolism : the official journal of the Italian Society of Osteoporosis, Mineral Metabolism, and Skeletal Diseases2017eng
INTRODUCTION: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a major complication after trauma, surgery, and/or immobilization of an extremity. The disease often starts with clinical signs of local inflammation and develops into a prolonged phase that is characterized by trophic changes and local osteoporosis and sometimes results in functional impairment of the affected limb. While the pathophysiology of CRPS remains poorly understood, increased local bone resorption plays an undisputed pivotal role. The aim of this retrospective clinical study was to assess the bone microstructure in patients with

BACKGROUND: Loss of bone mineral mass and muscle atrophy are predictable consequences of cast-mediated immobilization following wrist and forearm fractures. This study aimed to prospectively determine whether previously reported lower bone mineral mass following immobilization for wrist and forearm fractures in children and teenagers had recovered at 6- and 18-month follow-up.
METHODS: We recruited 50 children and teenagers who underwent a cast-mediated immobilization for a forearm or wrist fracture. Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry scans of different skeletal sites were performed at the time

Simple bone cysts (SBCs) occur most frequently in the proximal aspect of the humerus and femur in growing age and are associated with intercurrent pathological fractures in up to 87%. Therapeutic management of SBCs remains controversial. The aim of this study was to examine the outcome of conservative and various surgical treatment modalities considering the specific anatomic location and integrity of the SBC.In this retrospective study, we analyzed 68 cases of SBCs who underwent a conservative or surgical treatment between 2009 and 2020 with a mean follow-up of 30.1 months. The epidemiologica

Background: Limited methods exist to aid in deciding the appropriate donor limb lengths in bilateral upper limb amputees qualifying for vascularized composite allotransplantation. We hypothesized mathematical equations could be created using long bone length ratios, and applied to radiographs, to approximate the patient's limb length prior to amputation. Methods: A data set of 30 skeletons' unilateral upper limb long bones measured using osteometric board and calipers was used. Anatomic segment ratios were calculated based on humerus length after multivariate linear regression analysis. For cl

The study aimed to investigate the prognosis of osteochondral affection (e.g., osteochondritis dissecans (OCD), cartilage lesions, fractures and bone edema in the elbows of high-performance gymnasts (n=30) compared to prognosis results with athletes not undergoing excessive stress on the upper extremity (n=29). The study also tested a novel isotropic 3D-FSE-sequence (CUBE) technique as an early diagnostic modality. Standard protocol was used to conduct the MRI examinations, which were then compared to results from the CUBE - sequence. The gymnast group (p=0.012) presented a significantly highe

The authors present the case-history of a patient with multiple non-ossifying fibroma causing pathological fractures in the long bones of the lower extremities, the vertebral bodies, ribs and bones of the brachial plexus. Since 1988 when the first pathological fracture occurred up to the present time when the tumour was found at other sites five biopsies of foci were made, all with the same histological finding. The pathological fracture in the distal portion of the right femur and the proximal portion of the left femur were treated by osteosynthesis and filled with bone cement. Subsequently i

This study reviewed the clinical history and management of acquired growth arrest in the upper extremity in pediatric patients. The records of all patients presenting from 1996 to 2012 with radiographically proven acquired growth arrest were reviewed. Records were examined to determine the etiology and site of growth arrest, management, and complications. Patients with tumors or hereditary etiology were excluded. A total of 44 patients (24 boys and 20 girls) with 51 physeal arrests who presented at a mean age of 10.6 years (range, 0.8-18.2 years) were included in the study. The distal radius w

The use of local antibiotics for the prevention of infection in the setting of open fractures and as part of the treatment of osteomyelitis is well established. Antibiotics are most commonly incorporated into polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) cement, which can then be formed into beads, moulded to fit a bone defect or used to coat a guide wire or IM nail. Newer delivery vehicles and techniques are being evaluated to improve upon these methods. Many factors influence how local antibiotics are applied. Treatment strategies are challenging to standardise due to the variability of clinical presentatio

Enchondroma is a benign cartilaginous tumor rarely found in the vertebral column. The authors report a case of a 24-year-old woman with upper extremity paresthesias and weakness secondary to bony destruction of multiple vertebral bodies by an enchondroma. The tumor was treated by block excision of the involved vertebral bodies followed by placement of a bone graft.

This review examines intrinsic and extrinsic augmentation techniques for uniting hand and upper extremity fractures, including bone morphogenic proteins (BMPs), platelet-rich plasma (PRP), low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS), and pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF). While BMPs, PRP, LIPUS, and PEMF show potential in accelerating bone healing and reducing nonunion rates, their clinical adoption is limited by high costs and inconsistent results. This paper focuses on understanding the efficacy of these techniques, their drawbacks, and potential next steps for the field.
