A comparison study of the potential risks induced in arable land and forest soils by carcass-derived pollutants.

Improper decisions concerning animal carcass disposal sites pose grave threats to environmental biosecurity. However, only a few studies have focused on the effects of different land-use types on the composition of carcass-derived pollutants and microbial responses to the disturbances. This study was conducted using soil microcosms with minced pork built from arable land and forest soils for 5 weeks. To compare the risk induced from different land-use types by carcass burial, the soil properties, the microbial community, and multiple-antibiotic-resistant bacteria were evaluated for microcosm c…

A High-Coverage Yersinia pestis Genome from a Sixth-Century Justinianic Plague Victim.

The Justinianic Plague, which started in the sixth century and lasted to the mid eighth century, is thought to be the first of three historically documented plague pandemics causing massive casualties. Historical accounts and molecular data suggest the bacterium Yersinia pestis as its etiological agent. Here we present a new high-coverage (17.9-fold) Y. pestis genome obtained from a sixth-century skeleton recovered from a southern German burial site close to Munich. The reconstructed genome enabled the detection of 30 unique substitutions as well as structural differences that have not been pr…

Micro-computed tomography of a 500-year-old tooth: technical note.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) could be used to reconstruct ancient dental anatomy accurately and differentiate the enamel from the dentin, as well as to verify whether micro-CT could detect tooth disorders such as attrition or caries accurately. METHODS: Micro-CT imaging was performed, using a cone-beam micro-CT specimen scanner, on a 500-year-old human tooth found in a burial jar in the Cardomom Mountains in southwestern Cambodia. RESULTS: The occlusal surface of the tooth showed marked attrition, with the dentin extending close to the enamel layer on …

Inequitable access to Ebola vaccines and the resurgence of Ebola in Africa: A state of arts review.

The Ebola virus, a member of the filoviridae family of viruses, is responsible for causing Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) with a case fatality rate as high as 50%. The largest EVD outbreak was recorded in West Africa from March 2013 to June 2016, leading to over 28 000 cases and 11 000 deaths. It affected several countries, including Nigeria, Senegal, Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Until then, EVD was predominantly reported in remote villages in central and west Africa close to tropical rainforests. Human mobility, behavioral and cultural norms, the use of bushmeat, burial customs, preference f…

Cranio-facial clefts in pre-hispanic America.

Among the representations of congenital malformations in Moche ceramic art, cranio-facial clefts have been portrayed in pottery found in Moche burials. These pottery vessels were used as domestic items during lifetime and funerary offerings upon death. The aim of this study was to examine archeological evidence for representations of cranio-facial cleft malformations in Moche vessels. Pottery depicting malformations of the midface in Moche collections in Lima-Peru were studied. The malformations portrayed on pottery were analyzed using the Tessier classification. Photographs were authorized by…

[Uncovering an undetected homicide by exhumation].

The problems of postmortem examinations and the associated dark figure of undetected homicides are well known and have been repeatedly discussed in Germany. The article deals with the case of a 73-year-old woman whose death was initially certified as being natural ("sudden cardiac death"). When secondary suspicious circumstances turned up, an exhumation was ordered three weeks after the burial. At autopsy, signs of multiple blunt force to the occiput, the thorax and the upper extremities as well as compression of the neck were found. The findings proved foreign intervention and suggested death…

Does the occurrence of Harris lines affect the morphology of human long bones?

The purpose of the study is to check the relationship between the occurrence of Harris lines and the morphological differentiation of the long bones of the human skeleton as an indicator of living conditions. The bone material (233 adult individuals, including 120 males and 113 females) was collected at a medieval burial ground in Cedynia, Poland. Recommended methods were applied to estimate the sex and age of the individuals (Ferembach et al 1979; Buikstra & Ubelaker 1994). The results obtained indicate that there is no clear relationship between metric characteristics of the studied long bon…

Paleodemographic comparison of a catastrophic and an attritional death assemblage.

The aim of this contribution is to examine the effect of an indiscriminate epidemic on a population to assess whether or not a catastrophic event can be identified from examination of paleodemographic data. Using paleodemographic techniques, the death assemblage from the Royal Mint site, London, a Black Death cemetery dated 1349 AD, is compared with that from St. Helen-on-the-Walls, York, which dates from the twelfth to the sixteenth centuries AD. The Royal Mint site represents a catastrophic cemetery, while that of St. Helen-on-the-Walls is of an attritional type. Certain features of the pale

Investigation of neem-oil-loaded PVA/chitosan biocomposite film for hydrophobic dressing, rapid hemostasis and wound healing applications.

The present work aims to develop a hydrophobic dressing with a blood-repellent surface that achieves fast clotting without blood loss, havin … decreased granulation tissue. Additionally, the film's eco-friendliness was evaluated using a soil burial degradation test, and the results show that it deteriorated into the soil but did so slowly because of its hydrophobic property. Thus, PVA/CS/NSO composite film may be a green biomedical material for hemostasis and wound healing.

Influence of soil-rock composite stratum on mechanical response and failure modes of underground utility tunnel.

This research combines scaled model experiments with theoretical analysis to investigate the impact of underground utility tunnels (UUTs) on … mately 1.5 times its width and remains unaffected by the position of load application, the tunnel's burial depth, or the width of the composite stratum. Moreover, when the width of the soil-rock composite stratum equals the width of the tunnel, the tunnel experiences a laterally flexural stress state. Within this specific stratum context, the central axi …

Copper Catalysis-Based Amperometric Microsensors for Carbon Dioxide Monitoring.

A fast response microsensor that can detect the distribution of CO2 at the microscale level is essential for the observation of biophysiological activity, carbon flux, and carbon burial. Inspired by the previous success of Cu catalysis, we attempted to use this metal Cu material to develop an amperometric microsensor that can meet the requirements. Specifically, the ambient gases diffuse through a silicone membrane into a trap casing filled with an acidic CrCl2 solution, where the otherwise interfering O2 interferent is removed by a redox with Cr2+. The gases then diffuse through a second sili…

The genomic origin of Zana of Abkhazia.

Enigmatic phenomena have sparked the imagination of people around the globe into creating folkloric creatures. One prime example is Zana of Abkhazia (South Caucasus), a well-documented 19th century female who was captured living wild in the forest. Zana's appearance was sufficiently unusual, that she was referred to by locals as an Almasty-the analog of Bigfoot in the Caucasus. Although the exact location of Zana's burial site was unknown, the grave of her son, Khwit, was identified in 1971. The genomes of Khwit and the alleged Zana skeleton were sequenced to an average depth of ca. 3× using a…
