Ultrasound description and follow up of painful cervical interspinous bursitis in a Polymyalgia Rheumatica patient - a case report.

We present a Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) case with active Cervical Interspinous Bursitis (CIB) causing debilitat-ing neck pain as the most intensive symptom of the disease as reported by the patient. CIB was diagnosed and followed by Musculoskeletal Ultrasound (MSUS). MSUS examination of patient's posterior cervical region reviled well demarcated an-/ hypoechoic lesions around and cranially of the spinous processes of the sixth and seventh cervical vertebra. The initial detailed sonographic characteristics of the CIB are described, as well as the evolution of lesions size and extent with the …

The morel-lavallée lesion as a rare differential diagnosis for recalcitrant bursitis of the knee: case report and literature review.

A 72 year-old-male was referred to our institution with recalcitrant prepatellar bursitis. The injury was sustained after striking his right knee against a post whilst horse riding 9 months ago. Previous treatments included repeated aspiration and excision of the bursa with elastic compression bandaging. A diagnosis of a Morel-Lavallée internal degloving injury was made, and the lesion was satisfactorily managed by an internal quilting procedure to eliminate the potential dead space. A review of the literature reveals 29 published reports of Morel-Lavallée lesions with sufficient information f…

Arthritis, tenosynovitis, fasciitis, and bursitis due to sea urchin spines. A series of 12 cases in Réunion Island.

UNLABELLED: Arthritis, tenosynovitis, and bursitis due to sea urchin spine injuries have unique pathological features and run a chronic course until the spines are removed. Of the 40 cases of sea urchin spine-related clinical symptoms published to date, only 12 had osteoarticular symptoms. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We studied 12 cases with osteoarticular symptoms seen in Réunion Island from 1994 to 1998. There were nine cases of arthritis and one case each of tenosynovitis, fasciitis, and bursitis. The nine males and three females had an age range of 9 to 50 years. RESULTS: The injury was at the…

Treatment of septic olecranon and prepatellar bursitis with percutaneous placement of a suction-irrigation system. A report of 12 cases.

Ten cases of septic olecranon bursitis and two cases of septic prepatellar bursitis were treated in the period from 1975 to 1980 with antibiotics and percutaneous tube placement for suction-drainage and local antibiotic irrigation. All patients had positive bacterial cultures: Staphylococcus aureus in nine, beta-hemolytic Streptococcus in two, and Staphylococcus epidermidis in one. Intravenous antibiotics, local suction-drainage, and irrigation with a solution of 1% kanamycin and 0.1% polymyxin controlled the infection in each case. The antibiotic treatment averaged 19 days, compared with 24 d…

Histological study of a case of recurrent olecranon bursitis with mixed calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate and apatite crystal deposits.

This is the report of a light and transmission electron microscopic study of an olecranon bursitis and of the adjacent distal tricipital tendon in an 83 year-old man. The data are compared with those of a similar study in the same patient performed 2 years ago. Calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystals were observed in the bursal fluid, in the inner part of the bursal wall (extracellular localization and intracellular phagocytosis) as well as in the peripheral part of the tendon. In addition, small apatite deposits were observed in the bursa and tendon by electron microscopy. The origin of thes…

A placebo-controlled, double-blind trial of Benorylate tablets in the treatment of bursitis and synovitis due to sports injury.

In this two-week study, Benoral tablets, at a 4.5 g daily dosage were compared with a matching placebo in 20 patients suffering from sports injury. Four assessments were made: pain at rest, pain on movement, tenderness and soft tissue swelling. In each case the active treatment group (benorylate) was statistically greater than that in the placebo group at one week and after two weeks' treatment.

Excision of trochanteric bursa during total hip replacement: Does it reduce the incidence of post-operative trochanteric bursitis?

BACKGROUND: Trochanteric bursitis is a common complication following total hip replacement (THR), and it is associated with high level of disability and poor quality of life. Excision of the trochanteric bursa prophylactically during THR could reduce the occurrence of post-operative trochanteric bursitis. AIM: To evaluate whether synchronous trochanteric bursectomy at the time of THR affects the incidence of post-operative trochanteric bursitis. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study was conducted in the secondary care setting at a large district general hospital. Between January 2010 and …

Diagnostic Imaging and Cytological Analysis Aid the Clinical Investigation of Long Digital Extensor Tendon Subtendinous Bursitis in a Horse.

The fetlock joint is a high mobility structure that accommodates enormous loading during locomotion. An injury of the superficial constituent such as subtendinous bursitis may occur due to repeated trauma. An 8-year old school riding horse was presented with dorsomedial distension in the left hindlimb fetlock region. The lesion was noted following routine exercise. The horse demonstrated no lameness and a negative response to the fetlock flexion test. Radiographic findings revealed a smooth surface cortical thickening on the medial aspect of the distal third metatarsal bone. Furthermore, the u…

Local peritonitis and omental bursitis as sequelae of abomasal ulceration in buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis): clinical findings and outcome of treatment.

Abomasal ulcers are difficult to diagnose clinically with limited therapeutic approach to combat the disease. Omental bursitis (OB) and local peritonitis (LP) are known sequelae of abomasal ulcer in cows. In this study, differentiation between OB and LP in regard to clinical symptoms, biochemical analyses and the response to treatment in Buffaloes was done. Twenty buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) were admitted with a history of intermittent appetite, wasting and mild abdominal distension during the period between March 2016 and August 2018. All cases were female (12 recently calved, 2 pregnant, 6 n…

Mycobacterium avium complex olecranon bursitis resolves without antimicrobials or surgical intervention: A case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Nontuberculous mycobacteria are an uncommon cause of septic olecranon bursitis, though cases have increasingly been described in both immunocompromised and immunocompetent hosts. Guidelines recommend a combination of surgical resection and antimicrobials for treatment. This case is the first reported case of nontuberculous mycobacterial olecranon bursitis that resolved without medical or surgical intervention. CASE PRESENTATION: A 67-year-old female developed a painless, fluctuant swelling of the olecranon bursa following blunt trauma to the elbow. Due to persistent bursal swell…

[Ultrasonographic findings of disorders of the tarsal region in 97 cattle--arthritis, bursitis, tenosynovitis, periarticular abscess and vein thrombosis].

The clinical, radiographic, ultrasonographic and centesis findings of 97 cattle with disorders of the tarsal region (arthritis, bursitis, tenosynovitis, abscess, vein thrombosis) were reviewed (1994-2006), and the typical ultrasonographic findings of different tarsal disorders in cattle are presented. The following criteria were assessed: echogenicity, echopattern, size, shape, appearance of the borders of synovial or other cavities. Ultrasonographic findings were compared with the clinical, radiographic and arthrocentesis results and with intraoperative and/or necropsy findings. 50 cattle suf…
