OBJECTIVES: Although combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) can restore CD4 T-cell numbers in HIV infection, alterations in T-cell regulation and homeostasis persist. We assessed the incidence and predictors of reversing these alterations with cART.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the most prevalent cause of death due to a single pathogen. Bacillus Calmette Guérin (BCG) is the only vaccine available for clinical use that protects against miliary TB; however, this vaccine has shown variable levels of efficacy against pulmonary TB. In India, a single dose of BCG vaccine is given and there are few countries where repeated doses of BCG are given. Plasma levels of soluble CD8 (sCD8) and soluble CD4 (sCD4) in 44 patients with infectious mononucleosis (IM) were studied. Liver cirrhosis is characterized by both immunodeficiency and an exaggerated immune response leading to systemic inflammation.
