[De novo growth of a capillary hemangioma of the conjunctiva].

CLINICAL CASE: A 22-year-old woman patient, diagnosed with an inclusion cyst of the conjunctiva in the nasal sector of the left eye, who after 2 shot/needle injections in the lesion came to our clinic with a dense subconjunctival hemorrhage in four quadrants and with severe pain. After excision biopsy, a capillary hemangioma of the conjunctiva was diagnosed. DISCUSSION: Conjunctival capillary hemangioma is mainly a benign lesion, asymptomatic and mostly congenital in origin, its progression or de novo growth is rare in adulthood.

[Propranolol: Treatment of capillary hemangioma with orbital involvement].

CLINICAL CASE: A 2-months-old girl had a fast growth hemangioma in the left side of the face, that involved upper eyelid and superior and external portion of the orbit, covering her visual axis and pushing the eye and lateral rectus muscle. We gave oral propranolol as treatment and we noticed a fast and constant hemangioma reduction and resolution of orbital and palpebral component. DISCUSSION: According to previous researches, propranolol seems to be an effective and safe drug to treat capillary hemangioma. In our case, response to propranolol was satisfactory and with no side effects. This

Pulmonary capillary haemangiomatosis - An unusual cause of hypoxia.

We describe the case of a 58-year-old man who presented with progressive dyspnoea on exertion and severe exertional hypoxia. There was a paucity of radiological findings, mild pulmonary hypertension, and no demonstrable anatomical shunt. Post mortem examination of lung tissue suggested a diagnosis of pulmonary capillary haemangiomatosis. The case is unusual in displaying few radiological findings. We postulate that the severe hypoxia was due to shunting through the abnormal capillary proliferations.

Use of capillary blood to diagnose hereditary spherocytosis.

We studied 31 children with hemolytic anemia, or with positive family history for hereditary spherocytosis (HS), to assess the reliability of capillary blood samples for the diagnosis. HS was diagnosed in 20 patients. Cryohemolysis (CH) was positive in 94% and eosin-5'-maleimide flow cytometry in 90% of them, whereas flow cytometric osmotic fragility was positive in 94%. Capillary blood sampling showed to be useful for the diagnosis. Simultaneous use of these three tests allows confirming diagnosis in 100% of patients. The use of very small blood volumes (300 µl) allows an earlier diagnosis in

[Risk factors for capillary leak syndrome in neonates].

OBJECTIVE: To study the risk factors for capillary leak syndrome (CLS) in neonates. METHODS: The clinical data of 52 neonates with CLS (case group) were retrospectively reviewed. Fifty hospitalized neonates without CLS were used as the control group. The possible factors for the development of CLS were identified by univariate analysis. The independent risk factors for CLS were determined by multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: The univariate analysis showed that the incidences of hyperglycemia, respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), sepsis and cold injury syndrome in the case g

Lobular capillary hemangioma of the trachea: the second case.

A benign lesion also known as pyogenic granuloma, lobular capillary hemangioma (LCH) is relatively common a cutaneous and mucosal lesion. Earlier reports of LCH within the larynx and trachea have been reviewed and determined to be granulation tissue with an earlier history of airway trauma. Histopathologic review varies over time in this vascular lesion. Earlier, there is an extensive inflammatory infiltrate similar to granulation tissue; however, this becomes fibromyxoid as the lesion matures. An appropriate history is therefore mandatory to exclude any potential trauma, which would lead to g

Intussusception in a child caused by capillary hemangioma of the colon.

Intussusception is one of the most common abdominal emergencies in children, but identifying the cause is very difficult. Hemangioma is a common tumor of the head and neck area in children, but it rarely arises in the gastrointestinal tract. This report describes a rare occurrence of intussusception caused by capillary hemangioma of the colon that was identified by ultrasonography (US), computed tomography (CT), and colonoscopy. A male child aged 2 years and 10 months developed painful abdominal cramps and hematochezia. Abdominal US and CT revealed both target and pseudo-kidney signs in the co

Probing nanoparticle--protein interaction by capillary electrophoresis.

Understanding nanoparticle-protein interaction could help in promoting applications of nanoparticles in the biomedical fields and reducing/preventing possible adverse effects to the biological systems caused by nanoparticles. Quantitative measurement of the biophysical parameters of nanoparticle-protein interaction will improve such understanding, which could be conveniently performed by capillary electrophoresis (CE) as demonstrated in the present study. Two interaction situations were identified. Stable nanoparticle-protein complexes were resolved from the free nanoparticles and the proteins

Capillary hemangioma of cauda equina: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Capillary hemangiomas of spinal nerve root, mostly affecting the cauda equina, are extremely rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 20-year old man was presented with back pain, radiculopathy, and urogenital symptoms. Magnetic resonance images revealed an intradural extramedullary mass, isointense in T1-weighted and hyperintense in T2-weighted images, with noticeable post injection enhancement. The clinical and radiological findings simulated neurinoma. However, a pinkish lesion was removed surgically and histopathological examination revealed lobules of capillary vessels separated by fibrous

Photodynamic therapy in the management of juxtapapillary capillary haemangiomas.

Capillary haemangiomas occurring on or adjacent to the optic disc pose unique therapeutic problems. Their natural history is highly variable, but has a propensity to lead to the development of progressive exudate with marked deterioration in visual acuity, often culminating in retinal detachment and vitreal haemorrhages. On reviewing the literature, no therapeutic modality has demonstrated an efficacy in treating the lesion and providing an acceptable visual acuity result. A case of a 61-year-old man with a left-sided juxtapapillary capillary haemangioma treated with verteporfin photodynamic t

Exercise and insulin-mediated capillary recruitment in muscle.

Blood flow to contracting muscles is increased rapidly and is redistributed within the muscle. Recent research has highlighted that insulin causes similar changes, but these are absent in insulin resistance, resulting in impaired insulin-mediated muscle glucose uptake. Understanding the mechanisms and interactions between contraction- and insulin-mediated alterations in blood flow within muscle may reveal new approaches to overcome insulin resistance.

Pathophysiology of capillary haemangioma growth after birth.

Capillary haemangiomas (CHs) are the most common soft tissue tumours of infancy. It is generally believed that the primary defect in CHs is intrinsic to endothelial cells, but their pathogenesis is yet poorly understood. The relatively low oxygen environment, in which the human foeto-placental unit develops, during the first trimester, is necessary to induce vasculo-angiogenesis via embryonic endothelial cells proliferation, since these cells are sensitive to hypoxia and acidosis. In newborn infants with haemangioma, persistent embryonic primitive endothelial cells trapped in the intimae under

RASA1: variable phenotype with capillary and arteriovenous malformations.

Capillary malformation-arteriovenous malformation (CM-AVM) is a newly discovered hereditary disorder. Its defining features are atypical cutaneous multifocal capillary malformations often in association with high-flow lesions: cutaneous, subcutaneous, intramuscular, intraosseous and cerebral arteriovenous malformations and arteriovenous fistulas. Some patients have Parkes Weber syndrome - a large congenital cutaneous vascular stain in an extremity, with bony and soft tissue hypertrophy and microscopic arteriovenous shunting. In the past, arteriovenous malformations and arteriovenous fistulas h

Determination of meningococcal polysaccharides by capillary zone electrophoresis.

Meningococcal polysaccharides are medically important molecules and are the active components of vaccines against Neisseria meningiditis serogroups A, C, W135, and Y. This study demonstrates that free solution capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) using simple phosphate/borate separation buffers is capable of separating intact, native polysaccharides from these four serogroups. Separation appeared to be robust with respect to variations in test conditions and behaved in expected ways with respect to changes in temperature, ionic strength, and addition of an organic modifier. Serogroups W135 and
