The Paediatric Cardiology Hall of Fame – Donald Nixon Ross.

Donald Nixon Ross, FRCS (4 October 1922 to 7 July 2014) was a South African-born British cardiothoracic surgeon, who developed the pulmonary autograft, known as the Ross procedure, for the treatment of aortic valve disease, and also performed the first heart transplant in the United Kingdom in 1968. This paper, written by Jane Somerville, Professor of Cardiology [Retired], Imperial College London, London, United Kingdom, provides the personal recollections about Donald Ross from Jane Somerville, and thus provides a unique snapshot of cardiac surgical history.

Current state of interventional cardiology in congenital heart disease.

Congenital interventional cardiology seeks to provide alternative percutaneous solutions to congenital cardiac problems in preference to more traditional surgical approaches. Simpler procedures have been refined and are now achievable in smaller children and infants. More complex procedures are increasingly recognised as superior to surgical alternatives, though most patients with complex disease inevitably undergo combinations of interventional, surgical and joint or hybrid procedures. This review seeks to highlight recent advances in these techniques of most interest to the readership of thi…

Rhazes (865-925 AD), the icon of Persian cardiology.

For many long centuries, the function of the human cardiovascular system was an important issue among scholars of different eras and areas. Abubakr Muhammad ibn Zakariyya al-Razi (865-925 AD), known by the Latin name Rhazes, was one of the scholars concerned with this issue. This physician is recognized as the first great scientist of the Golden Age of Islamic Medicine (9th-12th centuries AD). He authored Kitab al-Mansuri (Liber Al-Mansuri), a ten-volume medical encyclopedia that covers a large number of medical subjects. The first chapter of this book is allocated to human anatomy and functio

[Disappearing borders between cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery: status quo].

Cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery are closely related so that collaboration and communication are required to offer optimal therapy for patients. During the last decades many innovations have reduced the borders between cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery. Today, cardiologists may perform coronary interventions with good results that would have previously been the domain of coronary bypass surgery. In addition new valvular interventions have been developed, such as transfemoral or transapical aortic valve implantation and endovascular mitral valve reconstruction. New developments in card…

[Underestimation of renal risk in cardiology clinics. RICAR study].

AIMS: The aim of this study was to assess the rate of patients attended in cardiology outpatient clinics in whom microalbumine or glomerular filtration rate had been determined, at least once, in the previous 12 months. METHODS: It was an observational, transversal, multicentric study. 1224 patients were included from 124 centers in Spain. Epidemiological, anthropometric, analytic and electrocardiographic data were recruited. Glomerular filtration rate was calculated thereafter by means of the simplified equation of the MDRD. Results. Microalbumine was determined in 34% of the patients, of th…

The Portuguese Interventional Cardiology Registry from 1992 to 2003.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present paper was to report trends in Portuguese interventional cardiology from 1992 to 2003 and to compare these data with other European countries. METHODS: Based on questionnaires distributed to and completed by Portuguese interventional cardiology centers we give an overview of the development of coronary interventions since 1992, when data were first collected. In 2003, 24,834 diagnostic catheterization procedures were performed, representing an increase of 315% in comparison to 1992. In 2003 the population-adjusted rate was 2483 coronary angiograms per million …

Sirolimus eluting stent: a new era in interventional cardiology?

Coronary artery stents have emerged as the preferred tool for percutaneous coronary interventions during the past decade by eliminating abrupt vessel closure and reducing restenosis compared with balloon angioplasty. While coronary artery stents prevent constrictive arterial remodeling and elastic recoil, the implantation is associated with more severe arterial vascular injury than balloon angioplasty alone. The arterial injury initiates a vasculoproliferative response with smooth muscle cell proliferation and migration as well as extracellular matrix formation, which may lead to severe neoint

[Thoracic radiodermatitis in interventional cardiology. Apropos of 6 cases].

The aim of this study is to describe thoracic radiodermatitis, a rare but not to be forgotten complication of interventional cardiology. The appearances are variable, from often oval-shaped erythema to cutaneous necrosis, with risk of chronic ulceration and malignant degeneration. The authors report 6 cases observed in 1997 after coronary angioplasty. Complex and long procedures are the main causes of this complication. Prevention requires a contribution from all the medical cardiological team, for the diagnosis, determining the indication of the type of revascularisation and for limiting the …

Preventive pediatric cardiology. Tobacco, cholesterol, obesity, and physical activity.

The prevention of coronary artery disease in adults begins in childhood. Public health strategies to lower the use of tobacco, improve nutrition, and increase physical activity are important for all children to lower the cardiovascular risk of the population. Physicians can contribute to public health strategies through office-based health counseling and as advocates for public health strategies both at local and higher levels. Children at high risk for cardiovascular disease can be identified through medical history (i.e., positive family history of coronary disease, history of tobacco use, a

Fetal echocardiography and fetal cardiology: indications, diagnosis and management.

Over the last 15 years, the ultrasound examination of the fetal heart has become increasingly sophisticated. Fetal echocardiography is now paramount in making an early and accurate assessment of cardiovascular structure as well as diagnosing and treating fetal arrhythmias. For the fetal sonographer, the increasing challenge of fetal evaluation has been paralleled by advancing technology. Today, a complete fetal echocardiographic study includes the structural and rhythm analysis using a combination of two-dimensional imaging, M-mode scanning, pulsed- and continuous-wave Doppler measurements, an
