Molecular detection and phylogeny of Hepatozoon species in a wide spectrum of hosts from northwestern China.

BACKGROUND: Hepatozoon, an apicomplexan, mainly infects amphibians, reptiles and mammals, accidentally causes anemia and icterus in human. L … was found in the other six mammalian orders (Lagomorpha, Chiroptera, Artiodactyla, Perissodactyla, Carnivora, Primates) or Squamata reptiles. Combined with our previous report on Hepatozoon canis in the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) and Hepatozoon felis in the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx), the study detected five additional Hepatozoon species: Hepatozoon chinensis, …

Molecular survey of tick-borne pathogens in Otobius megnini from Central Mexico with special emphasis on Bartonella detection.

Soft ticks (Argasidae) remain among the least studied hematophagous ectoparasites. One of these species, Otobius megnini, the spiny ear tick, is a widely distributed, likely Nearctic-origin species whose global spread has been facilitated by the movement of cattle and horses-its primary hosts. Despite its generalist habits and ability to parasitize a wide range of mammals, including livestock and companion animals from the orders Artiodactyla and Carnivora, its role as a potential vector of pathogens remains poorly understood. Previous studies have linked O. megnini to otitis and tissue damage…

Distribution, threats, population trends, and ecology of the Saharan Striped Polecat (Poecilictis libyca) in Tunisia: a questionnaire and field-based survey.

The Saharan Striped Polecat (Carnivora, Mustelidae, Poecilictis libyca) is a small mustelid for which comprehensive biological studies and demographic data across its geographic range are lacking. Throughout 2018, we investigated the distribution, abundance, and threats to this species in Tunisia by means of a questionnaire survey, spotlighting, and collection of other field-based evidence. Our study resulted in 32 new records, including 1 outside the previously known range in the south, while a contraction of its northern limits was determined from historical records (literature, museum sampl…

Prevalence and subtypes of Blastocystis sp. infection in zoo animals in three cities in China.

Blastocystis is a highly prevalent eukaryotic parasite of many animals and humans worldwide. It can compromise the gastrointestinal tract an … d 3.6% (4/109) in artiodactyla, aves, rodentia, nonhuman primates, perissodactyla, marsupialia, and carnivora, respectively. Significant differences in the prevalence of Blastocystis were found among different animal groups (P < 0.05). Sequence analysis showed 7 known subtypes (ST2, ST4, ST5, ST7, ST8, ST10, and ST14) of Blastocystis in the present study, w …

Non-human primates as a reservoir for rabies virus in Brazil.

Rabies virus (RABV) does not persist in the environment as it is a very fragile agent. The primary hosts are mammalian species in the orders Carnivora and Chiroptera. Since the late 1980s, RABV has been isolated from non-human primates, Callithrix jacchus (the white-tufted marmoset), in four coastal states (Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará, Piauí and Pernambuco) in north-eastern Brazil, where this species is indigenous. The original habitat of C. jacchus consisted of two Brazilian biomes, the Atlantic Forest and the Caatinga. However, these marmosets have since adapted to other ecosystems as a resul…

Molecular characterisation and histopathological analysis of canine distemper virus in a Malayan tiger (Panthera tigris jacksoni).

IMPORTANCE: Canine distemper virus (CDV) has a broad host range, spanning mammals of the order Carnivora and other orders, often proving fatal. The detection of CDV in a Malayan tiger (Panthera tigris jacksoni) in Malaysia in 2019 marks the first such case diagnosed in Malayan tigers, suggesting possible exposure from domestic animals or wildlife reservoirs. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to describe histological manifestations and characterise the CDV strain in the tiger to determine its molecular epidemiology and postulate viral pathogenicity. METHODS: Histopathology characterisation of the in…

Risk of Viral Infectious Diseases from Live Bats, Primates, Rodents and Carnivores for Sale in Indonesian Wildlife Markets.

Southeast Asia is considered a global hotspot of emerging zoonotic diseases. There, wildlife is commonly traded under poor sanitary conditions in open markets; these markets have been considered 'the perfect storm' for zoonotic disease transmission. We assessed the potential of wildlife trade in spreading viral diseases by quantifying the number of wild animals of four mammalian orders (Rodentia, Chiroptera, Carnivora and Primates) on sale in 14 Indonesian wildlife markets and identifying zoonotic viruses potentially hosted by these animals. We constructed a network analysis to visualize the a…

Comparative anatomy of the claustrum in selected species: A morphometric analysis.

The morphology of the claustrum was studied by stereological methods in representatives of five mammalian orders (Insectivora, Rodentia, Lagomorpha, Carnivora and Primates). In each species under study, a dorsal and a ventral part of the nucleus can be distinguished. Based on differences in shape and separation from surrounding structures, five morphological types of the claustrum occur. The claustrum of Insectivora and some rodents represents the least complicated morphological type. The nucleus is very poorly separated from the surrounding structures. The human claustrum is morphologically t…

Evaluating Protoparvovirus carnivoran1 Risk in Wild Carnivorans and Hunting Dogs in the Valencian Community, Eastern Spain.

Protoparvovirus carnivoran1 is a highly contagious pathogen that poses a significant threat to both domestic and wild carnivorans. Despite its importance, the dynamics of viral transmission at the wildlife-domestic interface remain poorly understood. Between 2017 and 2025, 303 fecal samples from eight free-ranging mesocarnivoran species and 243 samples from hunting dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) were collected in the Valencian Community. For the dog cohort, surveys were conducted to evaluate potential risk factors for infection. All samples were screened via real-time PCR, and positive cases we…

Toxic towns: Drivers of anticoagulant rodenticide exposure in an urban edge carnivore.

Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are used globally to control rodent populations; however, exposure of non-target wildlife is a growing conservation concern. Generalist predators are particularly vulnerable to both lethal and sublethal effects of ARs via bioaccumulation. Caracals (Caracal caracal) in and around Cape Town are attracted to forage on the urban edge, where they face AR exposure risk. We use generalized linear models to investigate the liver concentration and diversity of ARs in 102 caracals within a global biodiversity hotspot. We assess sex and age relationships, as well as their

Functional Evolution and Modular Behaviour in the Carnivoran Mandible.

The relationship between form and function holds a central spot in evolutionary biology, as the changes in such relationship through time, are likely to deeply influence how organisms adapt to the surrounding environment. However, anatomical structures may be interpreted as a compound of so-called "modules" which may respond differently to similar biomechanical demands. To understand the extent of how the form of a modular structure relate to biomechanical performance, we combined modern 3D shape analysis with phylogenetic comparative methods, to determine whether evolutionary rates of shape a

Quantifying morphological adaptations using direct measurements: The carnivoran appendicular skeleton as a case study.

Here, I study whether locomotor adaptations can be detected in limb bones using a univariate approach, and whether those results are affected by size and/or shared evolutionary history. Ultimately, it tests whether classical papers on locomotor adaptations should be trusted. To do that, I analyzed the effect of several factors (size, taxonomic group, and locomotor habit) on limb bone morphology using a set of 43 measurements of the scapula, long bones, and calcaneus, of 435 specimens belonging to 143 carnivoran species. Size was the main factor affecting limb morphology. Size-corrected analyse…

Isolation of Rabies Virus from the Salivary Glands of Wild and Domestic Carnivores during a Skunk Rabies Epizootic.

Rabies is a fatal zoonotic disease of global importance. Rabies virus is shed in the saliva of infected hosts and is primarily transmitted through bite contact. Canine rabies has been eliminated from the US, but wildlife constitutes more than 90% of the reported cases of animal rabies in the US each year. In the US, several wild carnivore species are reservoirs of distinct variants of rabies virus (RV). After decades of apparent absence, the south-central skunk (SCSK) RV variant was detected in Colorado in 2007 and resulted in a large-scale epizootic in striped skunk ( Mephitis mephitis) popul

Host-dependent differences in feeding and reproduction of Ixodes dammini (Acari: Ixodidae).

The frequencies with which adult Ixodes dammini Spielman, Clifford, Piesman and Corwin feed upon white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), raccoons (Procyon lotor), opossums (Didelphis virginiana), and domestic cats were compared in a wooded site in northeastern United States. By combining estimates of the quantity of ticks feeding on each host species with host densities, we derived the relative contribution made by each kind of host to the feeding of the tick population. To compare engorgement success and reproductive efficacy, we weighed ticks found on these hosts and compared tick weight

Prevalence of hematozoans in lions (Panthera leo) and cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) in Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania.

Lions (Panthera leo) and cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) from the Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area, Tanzania were examined for the presence of blood protozoans. Twenty-eight percent of the lions were infected with Trypanosoma sp. and the prevalence of trypanosome infection varied significantly between adjacent habitats. All of the animals were infected with Hepatozoon sp. and a Theileria sp.-like piroplasm that was morphologically indistinguishable from Theileria felis.

Pinealectomy or superior cervical ganglionectomy do not alter reproduction in the wolf (Canis lupus).

Twelve wolves (6 male and 6 female) were used to study the role of the pineal in photoperiodic mediation of seasonal reproduction. Eight wolves were pinealectomized (PNX) or sham-pinealectomized (S-PNX) at 5 mo of age, and 4 were superior cervical ganglionectomized (SCGX) at 16 mo of age (2 males and 2 females per treatment). All attained puberty at the species-typical time, during their second breeding season, except 2 SCGX males that did not survive. Reproductive cycles of an additional male that was SCGX as an adult and the PNX and S-PNX wolves, followed for a minimum of 3 yr, did not diffe

Clinical evaluation and prerelease management of American river otters in the second year of a reintroduction study.

In the first year (1984) of a reintroduction study, 10 American river otters (Lutra canadensis) from Louisiana were transported to Oklahoma, held for 5 days for clinical evaluation, surgical implantation with intra-abdominal radiotelemetry devices, and then released in Oklahoma. Four of 10 otters released died within 32 days. Clinical evaluation indicated that respiratory tract disease, bacterial and parasitic infections, and inanition may have contributed to the death of these otters. In the second year (1985) of the study, an exotic feline diet was fed, and the holding period for 10 otters w

Establishment and characterization of ferret cells in culture.

Cells derived from the brain of a 6 wk-old ferret have been subcultured over 100 times and have undergone over 400 population doublings in vitro. These cells, referred to as Mpf cells, have an absolute efficiency of colony formation in excess of 45%, exhibit a mean population doubling time of 12.5 h, possess ferret-specific antigens, and have isozymes with electrophoretic properties that are the same as those of isozymes found in ferret liver. The cells exhibit a cytopathic effect and support the synthesis of progeny virus when they are infected with the viruses of lymphocytic choriomeningitis
