Cat-scratch disease is a relatively common disorder that is the result of infection with a recently identified gram-negative bacillus. Although it is overwhelmingly a benign, self-limited illness requiring only supportive care, serious complications can occur and the disease may be life-threatening on occasion. Although randomized clinical trials of antibiotic therapy for CSD do not exist, CSD has demonstrated in vitro susceptibility to several antibiotics, and gentamicin has been reported beneficial in a few patients with systemic manifestations of the illness. Therefore, pending clinical tri

Cat scratch disease is usually benign, self-limited and without sequelae. Margileth has established four clinical criteria, three of which must be satisfied to make the diagnosis: 1) a history of animal exposure, usually kitten, with primary skin or ocular lesions; 2) regional chronic adenopathy without other apparent cause; 3) a positive cat scratch disease antigen skin test; and 4) lymph node biopsy demonstrating noncaseating granulomas and germinal center hyperplasia. Central nervous system involvement in cat scratch disease has been previously reported, although it is extremely uncommon. I

Cat-scratch disease is usually a self-limited illness characterized by regional lymphadenopathy and a skin inoculation lesion. These findings generally resolve spontaneously over a period of several weeks or months. The discovery of the causative organism, an intracellular gram-negative rod and the recognition of severe systemic courses in immuno-compromised patients have renewed the interest in this disease. We report a prolonged clinical course with lymph node suppuration in an immunocompetent patient. The diagnosis was confirmed by the detection of the organism in Warthin-Starry silver stai

The diagnosis of essential thrombocythemia in a cat was made by fulfilling the five applicable criteria set forth by the Polycythemia Vera Study Group for use in humans. The criteria were 1) a platelet count persistently above 600,000/microL, 2) a normal initial hematocrit that did not rise in response to iron therapy, 3) normal serum iron concentration, 4) absence of collagen fibrosis of the bone marrow, and 5) no cause for reactive thrombocytosis. In addition, normal thrombopoietin concentrations and splenic hypofunction were demonstrated. Melphalan was not effective in decreasing the platel

Primary hypoparathyroidism caused by lymphocytic parathyroiditis was diagnosed in a cat. Other causes of hypocalcemia (ethylene glycol toxicosis, phosphate enema administration, pancreatitis, renal insufficiency, and malabsorption) were ruled out on the basis of history, clinicopathologic data, and lack of supportive clinical signs, which in this cat included inappetence and tetanic muscle spasms. The diagnosis was confirmed by histologic examination of a surgically excised thyroparathyroid lobe that comprised lack of recognizable parathyroid tissue and a lymphocytic plasmacytic infiltrate adj

Cat scratch disease is a self-limited but chronic lymphadenitis which has acquired new interest by the description of a responsible pathogen, an intracellularly located gram-negative rod. Due to its low pathogenicity for laboratory animals, the definite proof for causality is still lacking. Severe systemic courses, mainly in immune suppressed patients, can however be identified more positively by detection of this pathogen. A routine diagnostic test is likely to be developed in the near future and therapeutic guidelines for the minority of severe, progressive forms may be drawn up.

A 13-year-old spayed cat was examined because of a suspected lower urinary tract obstruction. After 2 days, a urethral catheter could not be passed, and the cat was euthanatized. At necropsy, a 1.2-cm intramural mass was detected, obstructing the proximal portion of the urethra. Histologic examination of the well-circumscribed mass revealed a urethral leiomyoma.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) was diagnosed in four cats--one had an apparently congenital form and three had the acquired autoimmune form. All four cats were examined because of episodes of weakness including gait abnormalities, voice change, neck ventroflexion, and regurgitation. Palpebral reflexes were absent in all cats. Administration of edrophonium chloride resulted in transient resolution of clinical signs in all four cats. Three cats were tested for the presence of serum autoantibodies against acetylcholine receptor (AChR) by radioimmunoassay. Two cats with acquired MG had anti-AChR antibody …

A 7-month-old Balinese cat with progressive neurological dysfunction had histopathological lesions of brain, liver, kidney, spleen, and lung consistent with a lysosomal storage disease. Ultrastructural examination revealed lysosomal hypertrophy with membranous inclusions. Hepatic sphingomyelin and cholesterol were elevated 10 times normal, and total phospholipids were increased 3.6 fold. Sphingomyelinase activity measured with 14C labeled sphingomyelin at pH 5.0 was virtually absent in brain and liver. Other lysosomal hydrolase activities were normal or elevated. Clinical, morphological, and b

A mass found in the stomach of a 10-year old cat contained a female worm of the genus Gnathostoma. The mass was described as a muscular pseudogranuloma induced by the worm. Although the worm species could not be ascertained, it was concluded that the cat served as an aberrant host for a Gnathostoma sp that usually infects wild mammals in the area.

Cat-scratch disease is a self-limited disease associated with contact with cats that causes regional lymphadenopathy in children and young adults. Recently identification of the probable causative organism, a gram-negative, non-acid-fast coccobacillus, has been achieved through special staining techniques from skin inoculation sites and involved lymph tissue. Differential diagnosis includes a variety of other infectious diseases and neoplasms. Diagnosis of cat-scratch disease can be made by presence of typical clinical findings, history of exposure to cats, results of skin testing to cat-scrat…

Quadriceps contracture associated with a healed malunion fracture of the left femur was diagnosed in a 1-year-old cat. The proximal portion of the distal fracture piece protruded through the skin of the thigh. The protruding bone was removed surgically and the area of ulcerated skin was debrided. Because the fracture was stable and the cat was able to bear weight on the affected limb, surgical correction of the malunion was not performed. Quadriceps contracture is uncommon in the cat.

Bubonic plague was diagnosed in a cat. The diagnosis was made by isolation of bacteria from a ruptured bubo and by demonstration of an antibody titer to Yersinia pestis. The cat was treated successfully with amoxicillin and streptomycin. The entire veterinary staff was treated prophylactically with tetracycline.
