We examined the sensitivity of the ferret to emetic stimuli and the effect of radiation exposure near the time of emesis on local cerebral blood flow. Ferrets vomited following the administration of either apomorphine (approx 45% of the ferrets tested) or peptide YY (approx 36% of those tested). Exposure to radiation was a very potent emetic stimulus, but vomiting could be prevented by restraint of the hindquarters of the ferret. This is the first study to present data on the genotoxicity of low γ-irradiation doses for E. coli and S. typhimurium cells obtained using the SOS chromotest and the Ames test. The most pronounced effect was recorded in the first 24 h of γ-irradiation. After 72 h in the Ames test and after 96 h in the SOS chromotest, a significant effect of γ-irradiation on bacterial cells was detected. The results of investigation of the harmony of physical development of children living in Gomel (the density of Cs137 territory contamination is 1-5 Ci/km2) are presented. Age and sex characteristics of body mass and body length variations, annual mass gains, the mass and length parameter and the harmony of physical development are assessed. A significant proportion of the children have manifested disharmonious and sharply disharmonious development due both to the excess or deficiency of body mass of the 1st and 2nd categories.

We used voltage-clamp techniques to assess the effects of isoflurane anaesthesia in slices of sensorimotor cortex of guinea pigs and neonatal rats. Isoflurane (0.5-4%) depressed inward Ca(2+)-currents evoked by depolarizing commands from -50 mV. With additional blockade of K(+)-currents by internal Cs+, an early component of the sustained inward currents was a high voltage-activated current whereas the delayed component was an unclamped Ca(2+)-current; this was consistent with a simple compartmental model. Isoflurane decreased the magnitude of the high voltage-activated current.
