Varicella is a common viral disease affecting almost the entire birth cohort. Although usually self-limiting, some cases of varicella can be serious, with 2 to 6% of cases attending a general practice resulting in complications. The hospitalisation rate for varicella in Europe ranges from 1.3 to 4.5 per 100,000 population/year and up to 10.1% of hospitalised patients report permanent or possible permanent sequelae (for example, scarring or ataxia). However, in many countries the epidemiology of varicella remains largely unknown or incomplete. In countries where routine childhood vaccination ag

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Infection with varicella zoster virus (VZV) produces lifelong immunity, but duration of post-vaccination immunity has not been established. The purpose of this study is to determine if a difference exists in the long-term seropositivity of anti-VZV antibodies in a cohort of young adults who were vaccinated against varicella as compared to a similar cohort with a history of chickenpox disease, and to determine which variables best predict waning seropositivity following varicella vaccination.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study captures immunization and serology dat…

A 4-year-old boy presented with an enlarged pupil and anterior uveitis of his left eye. He had a recent history of a chickenpox infection. Contrary to previous cases presented in literature, over time partial recovery of the enlarged pupil took place.

It describes the ten best practices implemented by the Department for Prevention dell'AUSL 7 of Ragusa in Sicily, with particular reference to the draft coverage against chickenpox vaccine made in two cohorts: new born to 15 months of age (80%) and adolescents at 12 years of age (50%).

Cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs) are angiographically occult vascular lesions that present with a variety of neurological symptoms, including seizures, features of raised intracranial pressure and focal neurological deficits. In extremely rare circumstances, CCMs have presented with concomitant brain abscess formation. To date, five cases have previously been reported, the majority of which have affected patients aged 16 years or older. We present a case of a 7-year-old child with recent chickenpox infection, who presented with headache and left hemiparesis and was diagnosed with a larg…

BACKGROUND: Infection with the varicella zoster virus, a type of herpesvirus, causes chickenpox in children and herpes zoster (commonly known as shingles) in adults.
CASE PRESENTATION: Two 20-year-old male Soldiers returned from an outpost with a rash consistent with herpes zoster. Two other Soldiers with whom they were in close had had a similar rash 2 weeks earlier, which had since resolved at the time of initial presentation. Management and Outcome: Both Soldiers were started on an antiviral regimen and released to duty. They reported progressive relief, but both Soldiers redeployed to the…

INTRODUCTION: Thrombocytopenia is a frequent phenomenon in viral infections. Peripheral platelet destruction mediated by anti-platelet antibodies has been one of the proposed causal mechanisms.
OBJECTIVE: Results were collected and analyzed from published studies on associations of human viral infections on anti-platelet antibodies and total platelet counts.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A PubMed search was conducted using the following terms: Viral infection (OR Virus diseases) AND antiplatelet antibody (OR thrombocytopenia) AND HIV (OR measles OR dengue OR chickenpox OR varicella OR Epistein Barr…

The limited supple of appropriate tissues for study has been an impediment to investigations of varicella zoster virus (VZV) latency. Human … he establishment and cessation of latency, we performed comparative immunohistochemical analysis of chickenpox and zoster skin lesions. This analysis revealed that during primary infection and reactivation productive VZV infection occurs in a variety of cell types and that the major VZV DNA binding protein, ORF29p, is present in peripheral axons early during …

OBJECTIVE: Live-attenuated varicella vaccine is effective and safe in immunocompetent children. In this study, we assess the immunogenicity … compared with one dose of VZV vaccine (P = 0.0004). One subject developed possibly vaccine-related chickenpox with self-limiting hepatitis at 5 wk following vaccination. None of the patients developed herpes-zoster at a median (range) follow-up of 27.5 months (24.0-30.0).
CONCLUSIONS: Non-immune cancer children can be effectively vaccinated against chicken …

The data from the author's files and literature are reviewed with respect to the occurrence, clinical characteristics and treatment of encephalitis in children with herpes zoster. A differential-diagnostic table is designed to present the clinical features of this form of encephalitis in different age groups and infantile encephalitis in chickenpox and herpes simplex.

INTRODUCTION: Chickenpox is an infectious disease caused by varicella-zoster virus. Varicella vaccine is conventionally used for its prevention, and its administration seeks to reduce the onset of the disease and complications associated. However, there is still controversy about its effectiveness.
METHODS: We searched in Epistemonikos, the largest database of systematic reviews in health, which is maintained by screening multiple information sources, including MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane, among others. We extracted data from the systematic reviews, reanalyzed data of primary studies, conducted…

Herpes zoster (shingles), a painful and disabling disease, affects an estimated 1 million individuals in the United States annually and results in significant morbidity, lost productivity, and diminished quality of life. Herpes zoster constitutes the reactivation of varicella-zoster virus (VZV), the same virus that causes chickenpox. After resolution of chickenpox, VZV remains dormant in dorsal root ganglia. Varicella-zoster-specific cell-mediated immunity wanes naturally with advancing age or earlier in the setting of an altered immune status, which can result in the reactivation of VZV as he…

We sent questionnaires to 80 medical schools in Japan to know what the problems in hospital infection for students in medical schools are. Seventy-one % were sent back to us. There have been hospital infection from patients to students in 12% of the medical schools, included 3 cases each of measles, chickenpox and mumps, 2 cases each of rubella, hepatitis B and tuberculosis. Fourteen % of the medical schools had reports about the past history of infection and vaccination from students, 70% of the schools determined their antibodies and the 28% did nothing. Ninety-three%, 25%, 23%, 18%, and 15%…

In order to determine the impact of chickenpox on the general population, we conducted a retrospective study in four medical centres in central Israel. Hospital records of 182 patients discharged with the diagnosis of varicella during a 3-y period were reviewed. The patients' mean age was 7.9 y. A total of 14 patients (8%) were immunocompromised. Bacterial skin or soft tissue infection was the most common complication (32%). Other complications included gastrointestinal manifestations (14%), pneumonia (12%), febrile seizures (10%) and CNS complications (9%). Twenty-one percent of patients were…

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infection (chickenpox) results in latency and subsequent reactivation manifests as shingles. Effective attenuated vaccines (vOka) are available for prevention of both illnesses. In this study, an amplicon-based sequencing method capable of differentiating between VZV wild-type (wt) strains and vOka vaccine is described. A total of 44 vesicular fluid specimens collected from 43 patients (16 from China and 27 from the UK) with either chickenpox or shingles were investigated, of which 10 had received previous vaccination. Four sets of polymerase chain reactions were s…
