This research examines the pattern of secular change in the cranial morphology of two populations experiencing the epidemiological transition associated with decreased mortality rates in children, followed by declines in infant mortality and subsequent increases in adult longevity. The two samples examined in this study come from US and Portuguese individuals. The epidemiological transition occurred at different times in the United States and Portugal, with Portugal entering into the transition later than the United States. The results of the study show that the US and Portuguese samples exper

BACKGROUND: Child mortality remains unacceptably high, with Northern Nigeria reporting some of the highest rates globally (e.g. 192/1000 live births in Jigawa State). Coverage of key protect and prevent interventions, such as vaccination and clean cooking fuel use, is low. Additionally, knowledge, care-seeking and health system factors are poor. Therefore, a whole systems approach is needed for sustainable reductions in child mortality.
METHODS: This is a cluster randomised controlled trial, with integrated process and economic evaluations, conducted from January 2021 to September 2022. The t…

BACKGROUND: The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) have led to reductions in child mortality world-wide. This has, invariably, led to the changes in the epidemiology of diseases associated with child mortality. Although facility based data do not capture all deaths, they provide an opportunity to confirm diagnoses and insight into these changes which are relevant for further disease control.
OBJECTIVE: To identify changes in the disease pattern of children who died at the Princess Marie Louise Children's Hospital (PML) in Ghana from 2003-2013.
METHODS: A cross sectional review of mortality …

A retrospective study of 534 bed-rests permitted us to specify the reasons of admissions and mortality in the hospital service of pediatrics, Port-Gentil, Gabon, from June 1985 to May 1986: a high mortality rate (7.5%) with, specially, diarrheas (46%) and proteinocaloric malnutrition (19%). The other reasons of mortality are constituted by infections and neonatal diseases. Priority in public health seems to be child welfare (vaccinations, primary health care in the whole province of Ogoue, health certificates...).

Registered deaths from the vital statistics registration system of Lagos City, a system that was judged to be 60% complete, were analysed for the year 1977. Nearly 40% of total registered deaths were from infections, parasitic diseases and motor vehicle accidents. Of the reported deaths, 17.3% were from ill-defined conditions. Deaths from neoplasms, diseases of the nervous and sense organs, diseases of the digestive and genitourinary systems as well as those from congenital anomalies are relatively less frequent. Maternal mortality appears to be very high. The age pattern of mortality is diffe

BACKGROUND: Naegleria fowleri, a pathogenic free-living amoeba, causes primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), a rare but devastating disease with acute onset, rapid progression, and > 95% mortality. Despite its rarity, the catastrophic outcomes associated with this infection underscore the critical importance of prevention. In this report, we present a rare pediatric fatality caused by PAM in China, highlighting the challenges of diagnosis and treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Urgent endoscopy should be performed in patients with cirrhosis and acute gastrointestinal bleeding (AGIB), but this approach is resource-intensive and associated with procedural risks. Therefore, its necessity has been questioned in low-risk patients. This study aims to identify low-risk patients with cirrhosis and AGIB for whom endoscopy may be unnecessary during hospitalization.
METHODS: Patients with cirrhosis and AGIB who presented with melena alone were retrospectively screened from an international multicenter cohort. They were further classified according to the use of e

AIM: To identify and describe potentially vaccine-preventable child deaths in New South Wales (NSW).
METHODS: Child deaths in NSW from 2005 to 2014 potentially preventable by vaccination were identified from the NSW Child Death Register (maintained by the NSW Ombudsman) and the Notifiable Conditions Information Management System (NSW Health). Medical and post-mortem records were reviewed. Cases were classified as vaccine-preventable based on the strength of evidence for the relevant infection causing death and likelihood that death was preventable through vaccination. BACKGROUND AND AIM: Bleeding from esophageal varices is one of the frequent severe complications arising in patients with liver cirrhosis. The management of esophageal varices is therefore important for patient survival. The purpose of this study was to clarify the predictive factors for mortality in patients with Child C cirrhosis presenting with variceal bleeding.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 77 Child C cirrhotic patients with bleeding from esophageal varices was conducted. All patients received endoscopic therapy. Twenty-nine patients received endoscopic variceal ligation, and 48 p

BACKGROUND: The AIDS epidemic is now more than a decade old and direct evidence of mortality impact has become measurable, as indicated by a … the increase, but evidence of additional impact on mortality is hitherto limited. Infant and early child mortality among children of HIV-infected mothers is two to five times higher than among children of HIV-negative mothers in follow-up studies of maternity-based and community samples.
CONCLUSION: There is now empirical evidence of the mortality impact of HIV …

This article presents a population-based study of early childhood injury mortality following a nonfatal allegation of maltreatment. Findings are based on a unique data set constructed by establishing child-level linkages between vital birth records, administrative child protective services records, and vital death records. These linked data reflect over 4.3 million children born in California between 1999 and 2006 and provide a longitudinal record of maltreatment allegations and death. Of interest was whether children reported for nonfatal maltreatment subsequently faced a heightened risk of u

This study presents an overview of public sector interventions and progress made on the women's and child health front in Brazil between 1990 and 2015. We analyzed indicators of antenatal and labor and delivery care and maternal and infant health status using data from the Live Birth Information System and Mortality Information System, national surveys, published articles, and other sources. We also outline the main women's and child health policies and intersectoral poverty reduction programs. There was a sharp fall in fertility rates; the country achieved universal access to antenatal and la

Now, more than ever, physicians must be willing to suspect child abuse and report their concerns. New information from the past decade warns us that reports of violence against children continue to increase. We are learning that MRI imaging of the head may, in some cases, help date subdural hematomas, but long-term developmental follow-up studies of "shaken" infants are lacking. Intentional thoracic and abdominal injuries carry a high mortality. Finally, new information in the field of child abuse-in particular, physical abuse-is slow to come. Lack of funding for basic medical child abuse rese

BACKGROUND: Child Health Days have been implemented since the early 2000s in a number of sub-Saharan African countries with support from UNICEF and other development partners with the aim to reduce child morbidity and mortality.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate the effect of Child Health Days on preventive public health intervention coverage, and possible trade-offs of Child Health Days with facility-based health systems coverage, in sub-Saharan Africa.
METHODS: Data were assembled and analyzed from population-based sample surveys and administrative records and from local government sources, from six

BACKGROUND: Child malnutrition, in all its forms, is a public health priority in Zambia. After implementations based on a previous evaluation in 2012⁻14 were made, the efficacy of the Rainbow Project Supplementary Feeding Programs (SFPs) for the integrated management of severe acute malnutrition (SAM), moderate acute malnutrition (MAM), and underweight was reassessed in 2015⁻17.
METHODS: The outcomes were compared with International Standards and with those of 2012⁻14. Cox proportional risk regression analysis was performed to identify predictors of mortality and defaulting.
RESULTS: The dat

The incidence of recurrent tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) following a primary surgical repair for TEF and esophageal atresia varies between 5% and 15%. Further surgery is not only associated with a high morbidity and mortality but may cause a great deal of stress and anxiety for the parents who in this part of the world are reluctant to allow their child to undergo surgery. This is the first successful endoscopic obliteration of a recurrent TEF in a Saudi child using Histoacryle (n-butyl-z-cyanoacrylate) and Polidocanol (aethoxysclerol).

The availability of mortality data for any society plays an essential role in health monitoring and evaluation, as well as in the design of health interventions. However, most resource-poor countries such as Ghana have no reliable vital registration system. In these instances, verbal autopsy (VA) may be used as an alternative method to gather mortality data. In rural Ghana, the research team utilized a VA questionnaire to interview caretakers who were present with a child under the age of five prior to death. The data was given to two physicians who independently assigned the most probable cau

BACKGROUND: Despite widespread implementation of vertical transmission prevention and paediatric HIV programmes, HIV remains a leading cause of child mortality. We analysed HIV-attributed deaths in the Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) network, focusing on comorbidities, co-infections, and care gaps.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective, descriptive analysis of deaths in children younger than 5 years (under-5) recorded from Dec 3, 2016, to Dec 31, 2024, across seven CHAMPS sites in Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, South Africa, and Bangladesh. Causes o…
