Examining perceptions of a communication course for parents of children with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities.

The overall aim was to examine participants' perceptions of a communication course as held for parents of children with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities. The course curriculum included responsive strategies and augmentative and alternative communication. The research questions addressed the favourability, changes in parents' or children's communication and appreciated or unappreciated course features. Twenty-two written course evaluations were analysed. The mean scores for ratings were compared with ratings in a previous study, including those of parents of children with general

Recommended practices to organize and deliver school-based services for children with disabilities: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Inclusive educational environments can have a positive effect on the general health and well-being of children with disabilities. However, their level of academic success and participation remains limited. Considering scarce resources and high needs, identifying efficient methods for providing interdisciplinary services is critical. This scoping review, therefore, aims to (a) synthesize current evidence about principles for organizing and delivering interdisciplinary school-based support services for students with disabilities and (b) ascertain useful strategies for implementation …

Oral health status of children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

AIM: To compare the oral health status of children and adolescents affected by intellectual disabilities with their unaffected counterparts. METHOD: Citations published in English were searched from electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus) from their start dates to March 2017. The whole process was conducted following PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. The PICO (population, intervention/interest, comparator, outcome) principle was used to formulate the topic. Studies were synthesized through qualitative summary or,

Cognitive modifiability of children with developmental disabilities: a multicentre study using Feuerstein's Instrumental Enrichment--Basic program.

The study aimed at exploring the effectiveness of cognitive intervention with the new "Instrumental Enrichment Basic" program (IE-basic), based on Feuerstein's theory of structural cognitive modifiability that contends that a child's cognitive functioning can be significantly modified through mediated learning intervention. The IE-basic progam is aimed at enhancing domain-general cognitive functioning in a number of areas (systematic perception, self-regulation abilities, conceptual vocabulary, planning, decoding emotions and social relations) as well as transferring learnt principles to daily

Working memory structure in 10- and 15-year old children with mild to borderline intellectual, disabilities.

The validity of Baddeley's working memory model within the typically developing population, was tested. However, it is not clear if this model also holds in children and adolescents with mild to, borderline intellectual disabilities (ID; IQ score 55-85). The main purpose of this study was therefore, to explore the model's validity in this population. Several verbal and visuo-spatial STM and WM tasks, were administered to 115 children with mild to borderline ID (mean age 10 years) and to 98, adolescents with mild to borderline ID (mean age 15). Structural equation modeling (LISREL) shows, that

The relationship between stereotyped movements and self-injurious behavior in children with developmental or sensory disabilities.

We assessed whether the stereotyped movements (SM) that are a defining characteristic of autism are discriminable from those observed in other disorders, and whether stereotyped self-injurious movements, which are excluded as exemplars of SM in DSM-IV, differ from other SM in severity or in kind. We used the Stereotyped and Self-Injurious Movement Interview to assess self-injurious and other SM in children with autism (n=56), intellectual disability (n=29), vision impairment (n=50), or hearing impairment (n=51) and in typical children (n=30). Cross-tabulation of scores indicated that self-inju

Nutritional status and obesity in children and young adults with disabilities in Punta Arenas, Patagonia, Chile.

Childhood obesity is reaching epidemic proportions throughout the world; however, little is known on the nutritional status of children with disabilities. To address this issue, medical records of 748 children aged 18 years or younger receiving physical therapy during 2004-2005 at a privately sponsored free rehabilitation clinic in Punta Arenas, Patagonia, Chile were abstracted. Data included demographic, clinical, and anthropometric information recorded at the first visit. As a comparison, height and weight were also collected in 215 children attending local schools. Nutritional status was ca…

Assessing fears and related anxieties in children and adolescents with learning disabilities or mild mental retardation.

The purpose of the present study was to examine self-reported fears and related anxieties in children and adolescents (7-18 years of age) having learning disabilities (LD) or mild mental retardation (MIMR), and whether these fears and related anxieties differ based on gender and age. Students responded to two well validated instruments, The Fear Survey Schedule for Children-Revised and Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale. The results revealed age, gender, and disability interaction effects. Adolescent boys having mild mental retardation reported highest levels of fear related to failure

The management of drooling in children and patients with mental and physical disabilities: a literature review.

Amongst the duties of the paediatric dentist is the provision of oral care to patients with the problem of drooling. Many, but certainly not all, of these patients have physical and/or learning disabilities. Various methods have been advocated for the management of drooling in the paediatric patient and older patients with disabilities, including behavioural programmes, biofeedback techniques, physiotherapy, biofunctional oral appliances, medication and surgery. It is of paramount importance that the patients and/or carers understand the advantages and disadvantages of any treatment method bei

The persistence of rapid naming problems in children with reading disabilities: a nine-year follow-up.

In this study 9 children (6 boys, 3 girls) with reading disabilities and specific difficulties in rapid serial naming were followed from age 9 years to age 18 years. This group was taken from an earlier study sample of 82 third-grade children with learning disabilities. Tests of rapid serial naming, reading and spelling, general intelligence, articulation speed, and word fluency were administered to the subjects and to a matched control group (n = 10) in the initial study (at age 9) and in the present follow-up study (at age 18). The results showed that difficulties in both rapid naming and re

Caregivers of children with disabilities: a comparison of those managing "Успешно" and those needing more help.

A survey was mailed to caregivers of children with disabilities to ascertain how they were managing caregiving. Caregivers reporting they were managing "Успешно" were compared to those who reported they needed more help or could not manage much longer ("not OK"). Results showed the not OK group of caregivers had children who were more severely impaired and functionally dependent. Their mothers were in poorer physical and mental health, had greater demands placed on their time and finances, and received less emotional support from friends and family. Special programs provided some assistance but not…

Pineal gland volume in children with intellectual disability.

OBJECTIVE: Pineal gland volume (PGV), which is associated with sleep and circadian rhythm, is known to be changed in some psychiatric disorders such as major depression, mood disorders and schizophrenia. This study aimed to compare the PGV of children with mild and moderate intellectual disability (ID) and healthy children. METHODS: This multicentre retrospective study included 40 children with ID (patient group), aged 6-12 years and 40 age- and sex-matched healthy children (control group). The children were examined for their sociodemographic characteristics and for PGV using magnetic resona

Determinants of sleep problems in children with intellectual disability.

Children with intellectual disabilities are more likely to experience sleep disorders of insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness and sleep breathing disorders than typically developing children. The present study examined risk factors for these sleep disorders in 447 children (aged 5-18 years), diagnosed with an intellectual disability and comorbid autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome or Rett syndrome. Primary caregivers reported on their child's sleep using the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC), as well as medical comorbidities and functional abilities. Multivariat
