Bacteremia after endoscopic band ligation of esophageal varices.

In a 6-month period, 17 consecutive unselected patients undergoing emergency or elective endoscopic variceal band ligation were evaluated prospectively for clinical and bacteriological signs of bacteremia after each treatment session. None had signs of sepsis, fever, or chills; however, in one patient, a coagulase-negative Staphylococcus epidermidis was cultured from peripheral blood at 5 but not 30 min after the procedure. These data indicate that, in contrast to sclerotherapy, endoscopic variceal ligation rarely induces bacteremia.

Phase I study of neocarzinostatin in children with cancer.

Twenty-three children with advanced cancer refractory to conventional therapy received weekly iv doses of neocarzinostatin for 5 weeks. Doses were escalated from 500 to 6750 units/m2/week. Four types of toxic manifestations occurred: acute reactions consisting of shaking chills with or without fever and cyanosis (rigor), hypersensitivity, vomiting, and marrow depression. Evidence of oncolytic activity was limited to patients with acute leukemia in whom phase II trials at doses between 3000 and 4500 units/m2 appear warranted.

Anaerobic vibrio-like organisms cultured from blood: Desulfovibrio desulfuricans and Succinivibrio species.

Two unusual anaerobic vibrio-like organisms were recovered from blood cultures of two patients. One isolate was identified as Desulfovibrio desulfuricans. It appeared to be the cause of a 24-h episode of fever, chills, and profuse perspiration. This is apparently the first documented report of human infection due to this organism. The second isolate was a Succinivibrio species. It has rarely been described as a cause of bacteremia. The clinical significance of the organism remains unclear.

Clinical experience with CD3 x CD19 bispecific antibodies in patients with B cell malignancies.

In extensive preclinical testing, a CD3 x CD19 bispecific antibody (BsAb) induced killing of malignant B cells by resting T cells even in an autologous situation. In a 14 day clonogenic assay using a CD19+ pre-B cell line (REH), BsAb required repeated administration together with IL-2 to achieve a 5 log kill by resting peripheral blood T cells. Intravenously administered BsAb in an intrapatient dose escalation study of 3 patients with B cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma showed limited toxicity (WHO grade II fever and chills) due to tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) release by T cells. Pharmaco…

Phlebography of the internal spermatic vein (and the ovarian vein).

Phlebography of the internal spermatic vein was performed on 87 patients. In only two cases were slight complications (fever and chill) recorded after the examinations. The patients felt only a little discomfort during the examination. They did not have to be hospitalized before or after the examinations. In a few cases we saw sufficient values distally, at the level of L4-5. We have interpreted these cases as being normal.

[Specific secretory inclusions in the pyloric portion of the mouse stomach].

Aldehyde-fuchsin stainable secretory granules were found in the epithelium of the pyloric part of the mouse stomach. The granules are PAS-negative and nonstainable with lead hematoxylin. In intact mice only a small zone of the pylorus is engaged in production of such granules. Alpha-adrenergic stimulation causes expansion of the zone containing the granules. In mice exposed to general chilling after the propanolol injections there is a sharp extension of the zone in which the specific granules are distributed.

Advances in Kiwifruit Postharvest Management: Convergence of Physiological Insights, Omics, and Nondestructive Technologies.

Kiwifruit (Actinidia spp.) is valued for its sensory quality and nutritional richness but faces postharvest challenges such as rapid softening, chilling injury, and physiological disorders. Conventional management strategies help maintain quality yet insufficient to capture the complexity of ripening, stress physiology, and cultivar-specific variation. Recent research emphasizes the continuum from preharvest to postharvest, where orchard practices, harvest maturity, and handling conditions influence quality and storage potential. Omics-driven studies, particularly transcriptomics and metabolom

High prevalence of Clostridium botulinum in vegetarian sausages.

Clostridium botulinum is a significant food safety concern due to its ability to produce highly potent neurotoxin and resistant endospores. Vegetarian sausages have become a popular source of plant protein and alternative for meat products. While vegetarian sausages have not been linked to botulism, numerous outbreaks due to preserved vegetables suggest a frequent occurrence of C. botulinum spores in the raw material. The product formulation of vegetarian sausages involves limited NaCl and preservatives, and shelf-lives may be several months. The safety of vegetarian sausages thus relies mainl
