Interaction between the responses to stimulation of peripheral chemoreceptors and baroreceptors: the importance of chemoreceptor activation of the defence areas.

It has been shown recently that in the cat anesthetized with althesin, stimulation of carotid chemoreceptors evokes the autonomic components of the alerting stage of the defence reaction including cholinergic vasodilatation in skeletal muscle. The discrepancy between this result and those of previous experiments on animals anethetized with chloralose or barbiturates may be reconciled when it is realized that these more conventional anesthetics prevent normal transmission through the defence areas. The obvious conclusion, that activation of the defence area is an integral part of the response t

[Effects of 4'ethyl-2-methyl-3-piperidinopropiophenone on experimental rigidity and spinal cord activities (author's transl)].

Effects of 4'ethyl-2-methyl-3-piperidonopropiophenone hydrochloride (EMPP) on experimental rigidities in rats and spinal cord activities in cats were studied. EMPP in a dose range of 1.25 approximately 10 mg/kg i.v. reduced EMG spikes of the intercollicular decerebrate rigidity and anemic decerebrate rigidity in rats. In alpha-chloralose anesthetized cats, EMPP in a dose range of 2.5 approximately 10 mg/kg i.v. caused a dose-related inhibition of the flexor reflex without any effect on the patellar reflex. In spinal cats, 2.5 approximately 10 mg/kg of EMPP caused a dose-related inhibition of t

Functional and structural studies concerning the control of activity in zygomatic glands of cats.

The zygomatic gland of the cat consists of at least two parts, separated by a septum, and each drains by a separate duct opening on a mucosal ridge postero-medial to the parotid orifice. It is composed on thin-walled ducts and tubulo-acini, containing mainly mucous cells, but scattered cap cells are also present. In cats under chloralose anaesthesia there is a spontaneous flow of extremely viscous saliva and often, in addition, there is a reflexly elicited component to the secretion. In fact, in contrast to the other major salivary glands, the zygomatic gland is easily made to secrete reflexly

A comparison between the effects of edrophonium and choline in the skeletal muscles of the cat.

The effects of edrophonium and choline have been compared with those of the depolarizing substances acetylcholine, decamethonium, and suxamethonium, in both innervated and chronically denervated tibialis anterior muscles of cats under chloralose anaesthesia. Both edrophonium and choline were more potent antagonists to paralysis by tubocurarine than could be accounted for by their ability to stimulate the motor end-plates directly. It appeared likely that direct depolarization of the end-plate played no part in the anti-curare action of edrophonium and only some part in the anti-curare action o

Overview of pesticide exposures reported to the Moroccan Poison Control and Pharmacovigilance Center between 1980 and 2021.

INTRODUCTION: Acute pesticide exposure is a major concern in Morocco. Pesticides include herbicides, rodenticides, insecticides, and may include unapproved or illegally imported and/or utilized substances. Pesticides can be hazardous and acute intentional exposures can cause death. This study aims to assess the disease burden associated with pesticide exposure as reported to the Moroccan Poison Control and Pharmacovigilance Center, and to identify risk factors for mortality. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of all pesticide exposure cases reported to our poison cen

Cause of residual urine in bladder outlet obstruction: an experimental study in the rat.

PURPOSE: We explored the role of bladder mechanoreceptors in post-void residual urine in rats with bladder outlet obstruction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Partial bladder outlet obstruction was induced by a urethral ligature in 11 adult female Sprague-Dawley® rats. Nine sham operated rats served as controls. The outcome was evaluated in acute experiments using α-chloralose anesthesia 6 weeks later. Bladders were catheterized for infusion, pressure recording and intravesical electrical stimulation. Bladder efferent activity was recorded from a thin pelvic nerve branch close to the bladder. Micturit

Interactions of apomorphine and a novel neuroleptic dibenzodioxazocine derivative, as evidenced by changes of somato-autonomic reflexes and spontaneous sympathetic activity in cats.

The apomorphine-antagonistic effects of EGYT-2509, a novel neuroleptic compound, has been studied by two different methods suitable for investigating the dopaminergic modulation of sympathetic output. (1) In cats lightly anaesthetized with urethane (600 mg kg-1 i.p.), blood pressure (BP) reflexes evoked by electrical stimulation of the sciatic nerve were inhibited by apomorphine (0.2 mg kg-1 i.v.) at low frequencies of stimuli (2-8 Hz), while the BP reflexes were facilitated by apomorphine at higher frequencies of stimulation; the evoked contractions of the nictitating membrane were depressed

Effects of almitrine on hypoglossal and phrenic electroneurograms.

Almitrine increases breathing by stimulating peripheral chemoreceptors. Previous studies suggest clinical usefulness in the adult with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, but little data are available to decide whether almitrine would be helpful in diseases involving pharyngeal airway obstruction, such as apnea of prematurity or obstructive sleep apnea. We investigated the effect of intravenous almitrine on hypoglossal (HG), an upper airway nerve, and phrenic (PHR) neural activity in eight alpha-chloralose-urethan anesthetized, paralyzed, vagotomized, and artificially ventilated cats. Sympathetic nerve activity in the superior cervical ganglia increases in response to imposed increases in arterial pressure.

Sympathetic vasoconstriction of cerebral vessels has been proposed to be a protective mechanism for the brain, limiting cerebral perfusion and microcirculatory pressure during transient increases in arterial pressure. To furnish direct neural evidence for this proposition, we aimed to develop a method for recording cerebral sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) from the superior cervical ganglion (SCG). We hypothesized that SNA recorded from the SCG increases during imposed hypertension, but not during hypotension. Lambs (n = 11) were anesthetized (alpha-chloralose, 20 mg.kg(-1).h(-1)) and ventilat

Cold stress alters characteristics of sympathetic nerve discharge bursts.

Frequency-domain analyses were used to determine the effect of cold stress on the relationships between the discharge bursts of sympathetic nerve pairs, sympathetic and aortic depressor nerve pairs, and sympathetic and phrenic nerve pairs in chloralose-anesthetized, baroreceptor-innervated rats. Sympathetic nerve discharge (SND) was recorded from the renal, lumbar, splanchnic, and adrenal nerves during decreases in core body temperature from 38 to 30 degrees C. The following observations were made. 1) Hypothermia produced nonuniform changes in the level of activity in regionally selective symp

The influence of combined intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation and hyperosomotic mannitol on regional myocardial blood flow in ischemic myocardium in the dog.

We investigated the combined effectiveness of intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation and hyperosmotic mannitol (25%) on regional myocardial blood flow during acute coronary insufficiency. Cardiac output and paced heart rate were held constant in chloralose-anesthetized dogs during right heart bypass. Acute coronary insufficiency was produced by ligation of the proximal left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD). Regional myocardial blood flow was measured using radioactive microspheres. Left ventricular end-diastolic pressure, mean aortic pressure, maximum left ventricular dp/dt, and hemato

Ethanol inhibits the sensory responses of cerebellar granule cells in anesthetized cats.

BACKGROUND: Granule cells occupy a strategic position in the transmission of afferent information to the cerebellar cortex. They are also the most abundant type of neurons in the cerebellum. The functions of the cerebellum are thought to be sensitive to acute alcohol intoxication. The effects of acute alcohol intoxication on the in vivo physiology of cerebellar granule cells are, however, not completely known. METHODS: We studied chloralose-anesthetized cats at ethanol doses relevant to human drinking (0.3-1.2 g/kg). We recorded the electrophysiological responses of granule cell clusters to a

Successful treatment of capture myopathy in three wild greater sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis tabida).

Two adult and 1 juvenile free-flying greater sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis tabida) were diagnosed with capture myopathy after alpha-chloralose baiting and physical capture during a banding and feeding ecologic study. Blood samples were collected for serum biochemical analysis at the time of capture for the 2 adults, and at 24 hours postcapture, at various intervals during treatment, and at the time of release for all 3 birds. Concentrations of creatine kinase, aspartate transaminase, and lactate dehydrogenase were high within 1 hour of capture and peaked approximately 3 days after capture.

Differential effects of anesthetics on cocaine's pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic effects in brain.

Most studies of the effect of cocaine on brain activity in laboratory animals are preformed under anesthesia, which could potentially affect the physiological responses to cocaine. Here we assessed the effects of two commonly used anesthetics [alpha-chloralose (alpha-CHLOR) and isofluorane (ISO)] on the effects of acute cocaine (1 mg/kg i.v.) on cerebral blood flow (CBF), cerebral blood volume (CBV), and tissue hemoglobin oxygenation (S(t)O(2)) using optical techniques and cocaine's pharmacokinetics (PK) and binding in the rat brain using (PET) and [(11)C]cocaine. We showed that acute cocaine

Effects of anaesthetic agents on basal and histamine-stimulated acid secretion in the fistula rat.

OBJECTIVES: Anaesthetized rats or surgically modified preparations such as the Shay rat are widely used to study upper gastrointestinal function in the laboratory. Despite the existence of reports demonstrating that agents such as barbiturates can influence acid output, a systematic study of the effects of anaesthetics on gastric secretion has not been undertaken. METHODS: Basal and histamine-stimulated acid output were measured in chronic fistula rats after administration of injectable and volatile anaesthetics frequently used in studies of gastric secretion in anaesthetized animals. With th

Potencies of doxapram and hypoxia in stimulating carotid-body chemoreceptors and ventilation in anesthetized cats.

The effects of doxapram on carotid chemoreceptor activity and on ventilation (phrenic-nerve activity) were tested before and after denervation of the peripheral chemoreceptors in cats. Doxapram was found to be a potent stimulus to the carotid chemoreceptors; the stimulation produced by 1.0 mg/kg doxapram, iv, equalled that produced by a Pao2 of 38 torr. Doxapram also increased phrenic-nerve activity in doses as low as 0.2 mg/kg, iv. After denervation of the peripheral chemoreceptors, doxapram in doses as large as 6 mg/kg failed to stimulate ventilation. It is concluded that (in anesthetized ca

Baroreceptor and chemoreceptor influences on heart rate during the respiratory cycle in the dog.

1. Brief stimuli were delivered to the carotid chemoreceptors or baroreceptors in dogs anaesthetized with pentobarbitone or chloralose. Chemoreceptor stimulation was achieved by rapid retrograde injections of 0-2-0-5 ml. warmed, CO2-equilibrated saline through a cannula in the external carotid artery. Baroreceptor stimulation was achieved by forceful retrograde injection of 2-5 ml. air-equilibrated saline, or of freshly drawn arterial blood, into the external carotid artery after first clamping the common carotid artery. 2. Brief baroreceptor stimuli had no noticeable effect on breathing. Brie

Role of opioid and β-adrenergic receptors in bladder underactivity induced by prolonged pudendal nerve stimulation in cats.

AIMS: To determine the role of opioid and β-adrenergic receptors in bladder underactivity induced by prolonged pudendal nerve stimulation (PNS). METHODS: In α-chloralose anesthetized cats, 30-min PNS was applied repeatedly for 3-9 times to induce poststimulation or persistent bladder underactivity. Then, naloxone (opioid receptor antagonist, 1 mg/kg, IV) or propranolol (β-adrenergic receptor antagonist, 3 mg/kg, IV) was given to reverse the bladder underactivity. After the drug treatment, an additional 30-min PNS was applied to counteract the drug effect. Repeated cystometrograms were perform
