Abnormal epithelial structure and chronic lung inflammation after repair of chlorine-induced airway injury.

Chlorine is a toxic gas used in a variety of industrial processes and is considered a chemical threat agent. High-level chlorine exposure causes acute lung injury, but the long-term effects of acute chlorine exposure are unclear. Here we characterized chronic pulmonary changes following acute chlorine exposure in mice. A/J mice were exposed to 240 parts per million-hour chlorine or sham-exposed to air. Chlorine inhalation caused sloughing of bronchial epithelium 1 day after chlorine exposure, which was repaired with restoration of a pseudostratified epithelium by day 7. The repaired epithelium…

Investigating chloroperoxidase-catalyzed formation of chloroform from humic substances using stable chlorine isotope analysis.

Chloroperoxidase (CPO) is suspected to play an important role in the biosynthesis of natural chloroform. The aims of the present study are to evaluate the variability of the δ(37)Cl value of naturally produced chloroform and to better understand the reaction steps that control the chlorine isotope signature of chloroform. The isotope analyses have shown that the chlorination of the humic substances (HS) in the presence of high H3O(+) and Cl(-) concentrations induces a large apparent kinetic isotope effect (AKIE = 1.010-1.018) likely associated with the transfer of chlorine between two heavy at…

Chlorine dioxide inactivation of enterovirus 71 in water and its impact on genomic targets.

To control the waterborne transmission of enterovirus 71(EV71), which is associated with hand foot and mouth disease (HFMD), it is essential to know the inactivation effectiveness of disinfectants on EV71 in water. In this article, we present a comparative analysis of the effects on EV71 following exposure to chlorine dioxide (ClO2) under different doses, pH, and temperature conditions. We show that the EV71 exhibited strong resistance to ClO2 (more than the MS2 standard) and that Ct value ranges required for a 4-log reduction of EV71 in buffered, disinfectant demand-free water at pH 7.2 and 2…

Matrix metalloproteinases, IL-8 and glutathione in the prognosis of workers exposed to chlorine.

BACKGROUND: Workers exposed to chlorine may be at risk of deterioration in FEV1. METHODS: A prospective study of 72 workers examined over a 5.8 +/- 1.9 year period. A sample of induced sputum for cells and mediators was obtained in 69 subjects at baseline (Vb) and in 36 both at Vb and at follow-up (Vf). RESULTS: Sixty-four workers (89%) experienced at least one accidental inhalation of chlorine in the interval. The mean decrease in FEV1 was 30 ml/year and thus was within normal limits. Among the analysed remodelling markers, the level of the MMP-9-TIMP-1 complex, but not of free MMP-9 and TI…

3-chlorotyrosine and 3,5-dichlorotyrosine as biomarkers of respiratory tract exposure to chlorine gas.

Modification of tyrosine by reactive chlorine can produce both 3-chlorotyrosine (CY) and 3,5-dichlorotyrosine (dCY). Both of these amino acids have proven to be promising biomarkers for assessing the extent of myeloperoxidase-catalyzed chlorine stress in a number of adverse physiological conditions. To date, there has been no application of these biomarkers for determining the extent of exposure to environmentally present gaseous chlorinating chemicals. In this manuscript, we present a method using selective ion monitoring gas chromatography for the simultaneous analysis of both CY and dCY in …

Pattern of chlorine gas exposures reported to Texas poison control centers, 2000 through 2005.

Exposure to chlorine gas can result in serious adverse effects including death. From 2000 through 2005, approximately 9000 chlorine gas exposures were reported annually to poison control centers in the United States. Because a review of the literature failed to produce any Texas-specific data concerning chlorine gas exposures, we conducted a retrospective review of Texas poison control center calls and found that 2643 calls related to human exposures to chlorine gas occurred during these 6 years. The number of these calls increased during this period. Of the exposures, 750% occurred at home an…

Safety and efficacy of chlorine dioxide for Legionella control in a hospital water system.

In a 30-month prospective study, we evaluated the efficacy of chlorine dioxide to control Legionella organisms in a water distribution system of a hospital with 364 patient beds and 74 skilled nursing beds. The number of hot water specimens positive for Legionella organisms decreased from 12 (60%) of 20 to 2 (10%) of 20. An extended time (18 months) was needed to achieve a significant reduction in the rate of Legionella positivity among hot water specimens. At the time of writing, no cases of hospital-acquired Legionnaires disease have been detected at the hospital since the chlorine dioxide s…

Simultaneous removal of SO2 and NO by wet scrubbing using aqueous chlorine dioxide solution.

The present study attempts to generate chlorine dioxide (ClO(2)) gas continuously by chlorate-chloride process and to utilize it further to clean up SO(2) and NO(x) gases simultaneously from the flue gas in the lab-scale bubbling reactor. Experiments were carried out to examine the effect of various operating parameters like input SO(2) concentration, input NO concentration, pH of the reaction medium, and ClO(2) feeding rate on the SO(2) and NO(x) removal efficiencies at 45 degrees C. Complete oxidation of NO into NO(2) occurred on passing sufficient ClO(2) gas into the scrubbing solution. SO(…

Formation of molecular chlorine from the photolysis of ozone and aqueous sea-salt particles.

Halogen atoms from the reactions of sea-salt particles may play a significant role in the marine boundary layer. Reactions of sodium chloride, the major component of sea-salt particles, with nitrogen oxides generate chlorine atom precursors. However, recent studies suggest there is an additional source of chlorine in the marine troposphere. This study shows that molecular chlorine is generated from the photolysis of ozone in the presence of sea-salt particles above their deliquescence point; this process may also occur in the ocean surface layer. Given the global distribution of ozone, this pr…

Synthesis of glycosyl chlorides and fluorides via a mild chlorination strategy.

A convenient and practical approach for glycosyl chloride synthesis has been developed using benzene-1,3-disulfonyl chloride as a mild and efficient chlorinating reagent. Employing this method, we successfully synthesized a wide range of glycosyl chlorides, including both armed and disarmed mono- and disaccharides. The protocol was further extended to a one-pot synthesis of glycosyl fluorides via in-situ generation of glycosyl chlorides intermediate using AgBF4 as a fluoride source. This versatile synthetic strategy offers straightforward access to a wide range of O- and N-glycosides in good t

Use of upcycled biosolids for bioremediation of groundwater contaminated with chlorinated solvents.

Trichloroethene (TCE) is a widespread toxic groundwater contaminant; thus, the development of inexpensive and accessible remediation materials is needed. Bioremediation of TCE under field conditions often requires the addition of carbon amendments. This study examines the use of biosolids at a field site as a sustainable carbon-rich and microbial amendment. A trench with amendments was installed upstream of a TCE-contaminated site, which was filled with biosolids, limestone, and biochar. Field monitoring of water quality parameters was compared with microbial community changes in soil samples

Chlorinated bis-phenolic disinfectants inhibit human and rat aromatase.

Chlorinated bis-phenolic disinfectants (CBPDs) are widely used compounds. However, whether they disrupt the endocrine system by inhibiting human and rat aromatase (CYP19A1) remains unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of CBPDs on human and rat CYP19A1 activity in placental microsomes. CBPDs showed structure-dependent inhibition of CYP19A1, with the human enzyme exhibiting 1.3-1.8-fold higher sensitivity than the rat ortholog. Since lower IC50 values correspond to stronger inhibitory potency, the compounds were ranked as follows: hexachlorophene (5.47 μM) > bithio

Effect of chlorination and ultraviolet on the adsorption of pefloxacin on polystyrene and polyvinyl chloride.

During the water treatment process, chlorination and ultraviolet (UV) sterilization can modify microplastics (MPs) and alter their physicochemical properties, causing various changes between MPs and other pollutants. In this study, the impact of chlorination and UV modification on the physicochemical properties of polystyrene (PS) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) were investigated, and the adsorption behavior of pefloxacin (PEF) before and after modification was examined. The effect of pH, ionic strength, dissolved organic matter, heavy metal ions and other water environmental conditions on adsorp
