Chromium carbide coatings were grown at 748 K in a hot wall CVD reactor fed by sublimation of bis(benzene)chromium, BBC (MOCVD) and by direct liquid injection using a BBC/toluene solution (DLICVD). Total chromium levels were determined in 38 detergents and 12 bleaches on the market in Israel (45 locally produced, 5 imported). The samples were analyzed by Zeeman-corrected graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Chromium levels were higher than 5 ppm in 28 (56%) of the 50 products, from 1 to 5 ppm in 16 (32%), and lower than 1 ppm in only 6 (12%). The clastogenic and mutagenic effects of the hexavalent chromium compound K2CrO4 in lacZ transgenic mice (Muta Mouse) were investigated. Male Muta mice were administered an intraperitoneal dose of 40 mg/kg of K2CrO4 once on each of 2 consecutive days. Total, hexavalent and trivalent chromium were determined in surface and 30-cm depth soil samples from a highly chromium-polluted area in Guanajuato state, central México.
