PURPOSE: This study sought to identify and characterize subtypes of alpha 2-adrenoceptors in rabbit ciliary body.
METHODS: Radioligand binding assays were performed with the alpha 2-agonist ligand [125I]-p-iodoclonidine ([125I]PIC) and the antagonist ligand [3H]rauwolscine.

Juvenile xanthogranuloma is a benign cutaneous disorder which occasionally involves the eye, orbit, and ocular adnexa in children. Iris and ciliary body manifestations are commonly seen, but retinal and choroidal lesions are exceedingly rare. We report a unique case of retinal, choroidal, iris, and ciliary body infiltration in a 12-year-old patient diagnosed by excisional biopsy of the iris. beta-Adrenergic receptors from the iris-ciliary body of human eyes removed shortly after death were studied using membranes prepared by isopycnic centrifugation of tissue homogenates. This procedure separates uveal melanin pigment from plasma membranes and reduces nonspecific binding of 125I-iodopindolol. A 59-year-old woman had a sectorial pigmented iris tumor in her right eye and was found to have secondary glaucoma unresponsive to medical therapy. We used a contact Nd:YAG laser fit with a 0.2-mm diameter sapphire tip to excise a large (5 1/2 clock hour) iris ciliary body-choroidal tumor and a large (15 X 8 X 3 mm) choroidal tumor. The cutting and coagulation action of the laser helped to minimize intraoperative and postoperative hemorrhage.

Topical unilateral application of timolol reduces the IOP (intraocular pressure) of both the treated and the untreated eye. For this reason, a cental mechanism of action, in addition to the local one, has been suggested for the reduction of IOP by this drug. In this study timolol concentrations in the iris-ciliary body of the treated and untreated rabbit eyes were compared with pharmacologically active in vitro timolol concentrations. The drug concentration in the untreated eye too was found to be high enough to exert a local action.

A massive impalement injury to a 46-year-old man led to corneoscleral laceration, partial aniridia, traumatic cataract and rupture of the orbiculus ciliaris of more than one third of the circumference with extreme hypotony and practically blinding. In addition there was a massive circular haemorrhage into the suprachorioidal space. The course of the operative intervention leading to complete replantation of the ciliary body and so finally to normalisation of the intraocular pressure is described. The gratifying course could have been favoured by the diffuse retrochorioidal haemorrhage.
